Ó

PS3T-minus two days to next year, guys. And while you're wondering what's '07 got in store for us, let's take a look at some of the better things we've seen.

IGN's hosting an awarding ceremony over at their site, and it'll be covering the best of what's happened in 2006. And while it's a long list, taking a look at what's been good per console, we'll be focusing on their "Best Gear of 2006" collection.

Under this category, IGN reports that the best new console of 2006 was *drumrolls* the PS3, the Wii taking second place. IGN chalks up points for the PS3's sheer processing power, its packaging as a computer rather than as a gaming platform, and the availability of Linux supported distributions.

Sure the console's still got a long way to go given its slow start,  but given the package's initial strengths, it'll be interesting to see what will develop in the near future.

As for the other "Best gear of 2006":

  • Best Gaming Peripheral: Xbox 360 HD DVD player
  • Best Gamepad: Pelican NERF controller
  • Best PC Peripheral: Ideazon Zboard Fang
  • Best Portable Audio: Microsoft Zune
  • Best HDTV (Panel): Sony BRAVIA KDL-46XBR2 LCD
  • Best HDTV (Projector): Panasonic PA-AX100U

 » Why I Defend Sony....

****this is an original Post***

Perhaps I should Talk About The Main Reason Why I Defend Sony,s Efforts......As i am Not Simply Defending A Box That Play Games.....I am Defending A Path.....A Path that I believe The Industry Must Take

This Industry Has A Huge Potential With Unlimited Possibilities Beyond What We Have Now......Going Beyond Simple "Fun"....And Dealing With More Life-Issues....As Software Can In the End....Carry Ideas And Concepts.

A person Whos Suffering From Depression....May Play a Certain Game.....Get Attached to one of the Characters...and through The Games Story And Drama....May Decide That Perhaps Suiciding Isnt The Best Choice...And there may a Way to Enjoy Life Away From Drugs.....Thus He Carries a new Concept...and By this...The Game would Acheive what no other Medication Could Do....In a new Way

This is Just An Example on How Games Can Exceed their Current Understanding.....as their Is a General Understanding In the Public....That games Are Fun-Experiences that Are more suited for Non-Adult [Kids and Teens]....This is Type Of thinking Is Verry Common and Hurts The Path This Industry Must Take.

I think People Go into stores....they see the Wii....and it Matches this Image of Games that they Have...."Fun"...and The Wii is all About fun....so they go on and Buy it....Thus this Company is Even more Establishing This "Idea" in the Publics Head....All Under the "Back to Basic" Nintendo Slogan....That is Leadin the Industry Into Path Which It Should Never Go..

Games Must Make you Sad....It Must Show you Different Viewpoints.....Valeus...Concepts...It must Change The way you see life.....As they Carry this Potential....things Beyond Pure Fun....I think Sony is Heading this way....As Phill Harrison has already Said that games should be More than Simple Fun...and by this he already Declared the Path Sony is taking the Industry Into....Which is the Same One I see....Into More Life-Dealing Experiences

As for the Path Microsoft is Taking...I am not sure....Microsoft is excellent at Improving Our Current Experiences....Improving the Online-Experience with XBL....improving the already-Established Genres Like Shooters with Halo....But I still dont know whats Microsofts Vision of the Future of this Industry.

The One Good thing is they are not Dragging Us to the Past with this Naive "Back to The Basics" concept Nintendo is Taking.....Which Will Only Hinder Us

I truly Wish That Microsoft would Go The same way as Sony...This way we would Have two Major Companies Leadin the Industry Into The Right Direction....But....Should The Wii win this War......Then All Is Lost

» I will defend the Wii

Personally I think the Wii has a good strategy which is focusing primary on the market that Sony + MS aren't targeting, kids and families.

The offline multiplayer aspect of the Wii is taking the world by storm, it's sooo much fun. You can get your whole family involved and have a great time laughing, being silly, and enjoying an activity in the living room that even grandpa and a 3 or 4 yeah old can take part in.

Microsoft + Sony's offline multiplayer aspect really does suck in comparison. All players have different gaming abilities in my family and most don't game at all. I'm going to kick there ass in every single game blind folded, that isn't really going to be much fun for anyone. Players need to be at the same level to really enjoy the experience.

MS is the king of online. Finding someone that challenges you is very easy and it's a great experience. Playing online with friends with in game chat is great fun, usually your friends aren't so easy to beat. Xbox Live is excellent way to network all your gaming friends, and meet new ones. The 360 is kinda a try hard media center and wont reach it's full potential until it's hacked. Currently supports Pictures, Audio, and WMV video. HD media is accessible with an add on if you choose to go down that path.

Sony is offering a multi-media console. If you want a BlueRay player, this is the console to buy. Don't buy this thinking it's a complete media center though, it hasn't reached that point yet. The PS3 OS doesn't support major video codecs and Linux is sandboxed and runs a little ho hum. The PS3 has nice Picture + Audio functions, and supports MP4 video. For sony fans it has some good game franchises on it if you willing to wait for them to come out. Online is active but needs some major work, that's why it's free at the moment.

Each console offers something different, but I think the Wii is going to be more accessible to more people and will expand the industry greatly. Also it's making gaming more interactive as we move towards one of gamings ultimate goals, virtual reality. If you had played a Wii with a friend or family member you definitely wouldn't be dissing it.

I surprised IGN picked the PS3 as best console, it only has 1 good exclusive game on it. Everyone that owns a PS3 knows which game I'm talking about.

 » Different Paths

I must say the people above my comment have good views I think that Nintendo are not competing with the others, because they can't not with the wii and have taken a different path a path which has been Nintendo’s way all along I believe the wii is something new which should stand next to either a 360 or a ps3 so you have the best of both gaming styles. Even though Sony has been a complete jackass of getting things done you has to appreciate what is has done for gaming it has moved it to this level you see now and bicker over. I don't care who your backing just remember you did have a playstation and you were impressed and enjoyed what you played.

» Take note it won best in "gear"

"Console launch years only come around twice a decade or so, and they're always guaranteed to be exciting years. The 360 matured dramatically since this time last year and its second-generation titles like Gears of War and CoD3 made the PlayStation 3's job of shocking the world with its immense power rather difficult.

Nintendo's Wii launched to massive mainstream applause and a lot of hope has been placed in the potential for gaming innovation via the console's unique controller. Nintendo disappointed some, however, by choosing not embrace HDTV or to compete with Sony and Microsoft in processing power. The Wii can't even play normal DVDs.

Judging the consoles based upon a broad perspective that includes software now available and coming in the future an entirely different argument could be formulated. However, from a hardware perspective, the PS3 is by far the more interesting console. Though the launch software hasn't blown anyone away, the 360's launch titles were equally unimpressive, and the system will certainly mature. Sony's embrace of the PS3 as a computer rather than just a console, and the availability of supported Linux distributions for the console will also develop and will likely bear entirely unexpected fruit in future."

It won for being a good piece of gear not being the "best system". This is a bit misleading. It's like calling the Xbox last gens best system because of it's specs. It may have had the best gear and would have won best gear but still. The PS3 won for best gear. They even say so:

"Judging the consoles based upon a broad perspective that includes software now available and coming in the future an entirely different argument could be formulated. However, from a hardware perspective, the PS3 is by far the more interesting console."

So don't get the wrong idea...

But we already have computers, and computers do cumputer stuff far better than a PS3.

*No RSX for you!*

It won best gear. Not best system. It didn't when best overall. I'm glad some one else sees that.

 » wow

Finally some justice. This article means little, but its a nice change of pace from all the PS3 will fail and PS3 sucks topics. I will stick by the PS3 to the day it dies. I believe its the best of the 3 consoles and I hope that it will prove its dominance like its little brother the PS2.
