Steve Nix - Image 1 Steve Nix, business director for Id Software, was recently interviewed and has shared his thoughts regarding all of the next-generation consoles and has shed light on Id's plans regarding each of the three.

Nix praised the Wii for the ideas that breathed new life into the graphics race-driven console market. He described the Wii as "fantastic" and "mass friendly," pointing out that though the strength of the system may not come from turbo-charged visuals, the friendliness of the system and the ingenuity of game paradigms were just the right elements to attract a good crowd of gamers.

Nix also pointed out that the Wii may not be as powerful graphically as its competitors Xbox and PS3, but when Id does start developing games for it, they would "make it look special."

The director also hailed the Xbox 360 as a great platform with advanced capabilities, an abundance of development tools and a "programmer-friendly" machine that is a joy to develop games for. He also noted that the 360 is ahead of the PS3 by about a year as far as development tools are concerned and that's saying something.

This is not to say that Nix shunned the PS3. On the contrary, he described the console as a "powerful machine" and an "important platform" that Id will not ignore. He seemed excited about unlocking the power of the Cell processor and says that a lot of special things can happen for the PS3. However, he did say that the PS3 programming environment is not a friendly one at this point and it's much easier to develop for other machines.

"It’s a very important platform; plenty of PS3s are going to get sold into the market, so we’re absolutely going to be supporting the PS3 and we’ve said that in the past." said Nix. He also reiterated that Id would be committed to making games for Sony's console and promising to do just that.

 » iD Software doesn't prefer graphics-focused systems?

All these programmers saying Wii is so great, because it's fashionable to do so these days, is so ridiculous. Ok, now iD Software, --the same ones who have caused countless people to spend thousands of dollars over the years with each new release of Quake, Doom, or whatever, in order to get PCs powerful enough to play them ---iD Software now thinks that Wii is a great revolution? A piece of hardware that cant produce a resolution depth matching a 1997 Windows PC (720x480 was put to bed on PCs years ago), and is just a glorified processor-speed update to a Gamecube---that is supposed to be the bomb to iD Software?
.
iD go home. Youve outlived your welcome with the frame-chuging, gameplay-free Doom3.
.
And, while we are at it: exactly who are these "gamers" that everyone keeps saying Wii is attracting? If people were worthy of that title, they have ALREADY been playing videogames. Wii attracts those NEW people who will eventually cast it aside like a forgotten board game, and will have little effect in the long run on the videogames of the future (which, by the way, WILL have exceptional graphics AS WELL AS unique gameplay control).

Wii is a great system you dumb Sony fanboy. u just think that the PS3 is so great because it was good graphics. if you would look at the statistics the Wii is consistently out selling the PS3 and the 360 combined. The Wii is more powerful that the Gamecube which was more powerful than the xbox or the PS2. The reason that people like the Wii is that it is fun, it is something new that Sony could never of thought of. that is why the copied Nintendo (i dont care it they say that they thought of it on their own). Think about the reasoning before you post. The 360 has good graphics and the Wii is fun i have no need for a PS3.

Stfu, look at who's coming to talk ***** on a PS3 SITE. Ps3 is great because of the graphics, aND GAMEPLAY, what you think you just stand there and watch those great graphics? Stupid *****, go *****ing play it. You talk about how much wii sold as much as we talk about how the graphics rule.

And comparing a next gen console with a current gen? "The PS3 is more powerful than the PS2 which was more powerful than the xbox or the GC." Or maybe Wii is on the same level as the current gens? WII is fun for ONLY a while, all they have are stupid mario *****, I actually thought of buying a wii, I really wanted some rpgs, but all they released were 2 crappy ones (SUPER MARIO RPG HUHU STFU) and the other ones are some dumb ***** from SNES (don't get me wrong, I love that console) that I don't want to play.

btw:
u just think that the PS3 is so great because it was good graphics.

praising 360: The 360 has good graphics

yeah...

You moron, this is not just a PS3 site, this story was posted on the wii, ps3 and i assume the 360 versions. i do know what i am talking about, i have actually played all the systems. i dont just go and bad mouth them, i actually play them. Sony couldn't come up with something creative if their company depended upon it (which it does) they even had to steel the technology for rumble. i realize you dont just watch the graphics but it is more fun to actually do something rather than just sit there. i probably know more about video games and the consoles than you do so don't be talking. shut the F*** UP and think before you post dumba**

When I was reading that, all I thought about is what a load of crap it was. PS3/360 offer far more than just better graphics, the processing power lends to other areas such as AI/physics/multiplayer, things iD depends on. Doom 3 had heavy physics support, but PCs then and XBOX didnt have enough PROCESSING POWER to do much else (so other areas like AI and multiplayer suffered) with 360 and PS3 they wont suffer.

With wii, all you get are glorified tech demos

You probably don't know ***** about video gamings at all, and don't think *****ing playing mario makes you "know" more than all of us. You probably don't even know the structure of a game, programming and such. You do badmouth consoles, "Oooh I'm not intentionally doing it" You still are, stupid *****. Creativity doesn't change GAMEPLAY, if you knew about gaming more than me, you'd know that. Who cares if we can use a remote to aim and shoot, or pick a nose. WE HAVE A CONTROLLER, it's more easier to handle, and doesn't have unnneccesary interactivity. I wouldn't be caught dead playing a fighting game with two sticks. "Oh What if you want to shoot?!?" buy a *****ing guncon, there is one working for PS3 (LIKSANG TOPGUN). Replay value + bad on wii (especially because of the games..)

» Graphics in videogames do matter as much as gameplay

Without resorting to the need to call people names, etc., like some: the point of my post was that it's quite ironic and borderline ridiculous for anyone from a software house like iD, after all their years of pushing the limits of graphics capability on systems, to suddenly give the highest praise to the weakest system on the market. For the record, I do own + love the PS3 for many reasons, including controllers, gameplay quality + interface design; however, I do also own the Xbox 360 for the 1 or 2 games that I want which may not be available for a while on PS3. Its menu interface is horrible, but I'll concede that the 2 systems on the face of CURRENT games seem similarly-powered. I have played the Wii in demos, and that was enough to keep me away, along with the clearly 2001-grade graphics. It is quite foolish to say that graphics don't matter. If that's so, whip out an Atari 2600; because last I checked, the vast majority of those games relied on NOTHING MORE than gameplay, as better graphics were not possible.
.
Interesting thing to note: people DO still buy and play 2600 emulators and the like, but they eventually set those $20 controller-game toys aside, don't they? --Because we've evolved beyond that point. We have become accustomed to BETTER graphics and good gameplay. One is not enough alone.
.
Likewise, I consider the Wii to be Nintendo's overpriced yesteryear-console which people will eventually cast aside as such after the fad fades.
.
In the end, it is not really natural, anyway, for someone to sit or stand in one place and flail about with motion controllers. Even on some of the games with perfected integration of motion control on PS3, such as Flow or Motorstorm; at some point you just want to sit down, controller STILL in hand and RELAX and play. That's the point of videogames: as much as anyone dreams otherwise, it is NOT an active sport. It is an armchair entertainment.

 » What the hell?

The XBOX is more powerful than the ps2.

And i agree the wii, hasn't got a great variety of rpg yet, but they will do. And game play does matter in a game as well as graphics. What you were saying was that:

You like to stare at a car that almost looks so real but you can only move forward and reverse.

However, the Nintendo wii doesn't offer the supreme real life graphics but it allows you to move in all directions and change gears :P

And the selling of a console does relate to how good it is, hence why people buy it.

 » Actually

Sony did create something that Microsoft copyed and that was the EyeToy and Playstation created this gaming generation if it wasn't for Sony and the Playstation Brand then the gaming industry wouldn't be where it is today Sony created the most amazing gaming machine where you could find every genre of gaming possible so think about it before you go opening your mouth next time Playstation is the King of gaming :)
