Ó

PS3We just reported that the PS3 "might" be delayed. Not in a good mood? Well, sorry guys, but there might be another problem. This time, it's something to do with the PS3's Operating System. You know, those things which take care of the hardware and software. For example, Windows XP for the PC.

First, let me give you a little background info about the Xbox 360's OS :

  • The OS runs continually in the background. It doesn't matter if you're playing a game or watching a movie. The operating system stays in the background continuously interfacing with the hardware and software.
  • While it might suck-up a bit of the resources (more on that later), it helps immensely. It's easier to make online play. The whole interface becomes solid and one.
  • Features like Voice Chat, Custom Music, Alerts in all games, regardless whether the game-devs decide to put it or not.
Now, about the processing power which it uses to do this :
  • 32mb of the 512mb of available GDDR3 RAM
  • 3% CPU time on Core1 and Core2 (nothing is reserved on Core0)
In the case of the Xbox360, this cost is approximately 2% of total CPU time and 6.25% of the Xbox360's total available RAM.  Balancing these out, one could argue that MS has removed a total of 4% of the Xbox360's total available system power in order to provide these features and more which were not mentioned.  They also left room, CPU and RAM wise, for future features.  In other words, they are not entirely using all of the CPU Time and RAM that they have reserved to date.

It is well known that the PS3 will be having 7 SPEs on the Cell Processor. And the PS3 will also be having a continuous running OS like the Xbox 360. Its features will be pretty similar to the Xbox 360's OS too.

Now for some bad news, the PS3's OS will be using resources in the following manner :
  • 32mb of the 256mb of available GDDR3 memory off the RSX chip.
  • 64mb of the 256mb of available XDR memory off the Cell CPU
  • 1 SPE of 7 constantly reserved.
  • 1 SPE of 7 able to be "taken" by the OS at a moments notice (games have to give it up if requested)
Now if we use the Xbox 360's example, then the PS3's OS is using 25% of the available Cores on the CPU and 18.75% of the available RAM in the system. Balancing these out, one could argue that Sony has removed a total of 23% of the available system power in the PS3 for these features as well as others that are not mentioned here or will be added in future updates to the PS3 Operation System.

So what does that mean for the PS3 ? Well, for starters, the Operating System will be using more resources when compared the 360's. This means that even though the PS3 might be more powerful than the 360, it's using more resources for processing things other than the game itself. While it is certain that you won't get all the processing power for gaming, we still don't know how much exactly.

"according to The Inquirer's assumptions" thats all this is at the moment - assumptions.

Don't believe it until its official.

Well you could say that this will allow PS3 Dev more time to get their games ready, that is if Sony ships the devkits :D

 » oh well

i guess if ps3 is 2x as powerful as xbox360 then there's still a margin... of course, it being 2x as powerful is just conjecture, as is this piece of news.

 » uh-huh

I'm going to invent a new word for this: newbs. Can be read in multiple ways, but they all fit.

Didn't we hear at the GDC that the Cell was specifically designed for this kind of thing? Anyway, we'll see. What I am really wondering about is that when Sony announced that 7 of the 8 SPEs on the Cell would be available, that they perhaps meant that the 8th SPE is doing OS stuff, rather than just sitting there being a redundant little part in case of failure ...

 » Stupidness

Gegenki > registering is long
How the hell would they know something like that. Its not like Sony annouced this. Also what operating system would take 32MB of 256MB from a graphics core when we full and well know the Cell can process graphics on its own. And the OS doesn't even need game level graphics. Its not even asif that SPE can reach that 32MB of ram anyway because that part is exclusive to the RSX. Don't believe this crap, also known as slander. A program just randomly giving up an SPE would result in a performance drop of 16% Many devs use each SPE for a specific task so you would suddenly lose a part of the game. This is stupidness. If you believe this, you'll believe anything

if this is true than xbox live is put sony on its toes, since this is an exact copy of every thing the you can do on live right now blades and all, with the exeption of the camera, until it comes out anyways.

first of all its not official... if the os is linuz then very little of the systems resources would be used.. but we need to remember that sony is battling a lot of new technologies here and it may have fixes for it in the future.

hmm one would think that m$ would use ram and use ram unefficiently like it is w/WINDOWS LOL we'll see though...

 » I agree with comment 9...

Actually I agree with all of these comments but mostly comment 9. We have already official news that the O.S. will infact be a Linux operating system, simply because a windows crashes a lot because it uses a lot of resources.

I have tried Linux and I am sure all of you have as well and you should very well know that a Linux OS does not take that much of the hardware - actually almost nothing. While Windows takes quite a bit, and this could be why it crashes a lot of times, it takes almost all of the hardware stuff and then when there is no more: BOOM crash!!!

Most probably as future updates come for the PS3 there will be changes as to how the OS uses its resources. I would also like to thank comment 6 about the 8th core. We know that the CELL processor chip comes with 10 cores or was made with 10 cores. Of those cores only 7 were said to be used so what happened to the other 3? My guess is like the person who made comment 6 they might be used for the OS. But if anyone maybe read this article there was once when Sony thought of using the cell processor as a graphics card bought then found it was not really a graphics thing only processing. So it will have enough power byitself to power the OS!!!

In finality, I have to say one thing about this article and all others. I think microsoft is paying companies from all over teh place to make these articles to make people hate the PS3, because if you have noticed most of the articles are in favour of the Xbox 360, coincidence? I think not! Well one word to Microsoft, your console sucks!!!

 » Um... no

Stop posting news from sites that noone has ever heard of before asif it might be true. Sony arnt gonna search the internet for a site that 3 people (2 of which seem to be QJ reporters) actually visit just to give them exclusive details on the PS3 so we can talk about it. Expect announcements like this to be found at sites like gamespot or ign.

   by aguycalleddave - 2006-04-13
 » i wouldn't mind...

I really wouldn't mind about this if it involved pressing pause, going straight back to the os in the middle of the game, changing the soundtrack, watching a vid, setting a download off and hell maybe even talking to friends in a chat room style thing.

   by gamerX09 - 2006-04-13

So, could the PS3 fully function as a computer, doing all the stuff a computer would do, like websurfing and running .EXE's? If so, that would be awesome. Now if only it could run PC games...

 » The 8th SPE & OS

First of all there will only be 7SPEs due to trying to increase the manufacturing yield, in which Spong reported awhile back. If one of the SPEs were not active then the 8th SPE would then become active to replace the failing SPE.

As stated above Linux does not require much of the hardware as does Windows, so this needs to be kept in mind.

Next, there is supposed to be a Linux OS for the system...
THAT DOESNT MEAN THAT THE OS WILL BE CONSTANTLY RUNNING AS WITH THE 360. It could be similar to the PS1 and PS2, while only allowing the OS to run while the game is not in play. Though an OS would help an online structure, there are ways around not running a game on top of an OS.

 » Exactly

the operating system might not need to be running with the game..and if it is it would definitely be in a state that would be of minimal resource usage.. the ps3 isnt finished yet. i for one doubt this article completely. and as i stated above linux is a very good choice for operating system..microsofts ony real advantage is the fact that their hardware is complete and the developers had the dev kits much sooner and in a complete state...another advantage microsoft may have is that their hardware will be easier to get performance out of but the ps3 will have higher potential... look at the ps2 and the xbox. the xbox was far more powerful and easier to program for but the ps2 still had way more games and more systems sold due to being the second in a line of a trusted brand name...in reality the only thing that matters is what we the consumers want.

» Read what the guys at beyond3d says about it.

PS3 will use the resourses to do things the gamemakers would anyway. This way they wont need to, and it will save them time and the code will be more stable.

Sorry, but this is a good thing. Resourses will be used in a very smart way to actually speed things up. This will become more clear very soon...

 » a sacrifice yes

When taking out this much power, one can at first glance be oh my gosh that is the worst thing ever, but I would assume that they are making the system give up that power if the system is using it for something else. I think it will fluctuate in the end, which isn't all that bad. No need to worry.

 » I'm getting a 360

That's it I'm getting a 360.. Yeah right stop making this bs up and just wait till E3. Sony will end all this bs and Microsoft is going to loose a lot more billions this time, greedy bastards.

 » that's right...

That's right wait till E3 when we see it truly in action. Then all those microsoft fanboys will cower in their rooms from the shame the Xbox 360 brought them lol, muhahha!!!

This info came from a speculation thread at Beyond3D. None of it is official. It's just people making assumptions, very wrong assumptions.

 » Oh Brother.

I am not a sony fonboy or a microsoft fanboy, but, I must say that all of you are acting like little babies.

"oh, boo hoo, my PS3 is using more power than it actually has"

Get over it. The PS2 did the same exact thing. Thats why the Sega Dreamcast was more powerful in some ways. "this article is fake, M$ is putting out alot of $ to make up these lies."

what "lies" ? I would expect something like this from sony. You guys need to get over it. This is the saddest display Iv'e ever seen from fanboys like you guys.

and no I am not an Anonymous Coward, My Name is T.K. (i'm too lazy to register) and which one of you liars think that the PS3 is 2x more powerful than Xbox 360?! THAT is a bunch of crap. There is proof that the xbox360 has way more general processing power and memory than PS3. It's not about the problem, it's about how you DEAL with the problem.

This is a sad day for sony fans....acting like this. MS fanboys act WAY better than you guys. I'm neither, and I'm both.

I've been reading your posts and they all seem to be from sources that are heavily subjective or speculative. Like others have said, it seems as though MS is paying people. You aren't one of them are you?

are you saying its a conspiricy when there is bad news against the Playstation?

dear god fanboys are stupider than i thought.
why would you ruin the name of your magazine or news publishing company by taking bribes? your whole business would go under.

thats why it doesnt happen, and when it does happen, its always to the small mags that need the extra cash and noone trusts their information anyway.

 » Clarification

The "subjective information" is the result of a total lack of concrete information. Unless you want this site to be absolutely DEAD, I suggest you stop complaining about these "rumor" posts.

As for the SPEs, what ascharf85 was trying to say is that during the manufacturing process of the Cell units, errors in the process can render a processing unit damaged and non-functional. By requiring only 7 of the SPEs to function, even those Cell processors with 1 damaged core would still be viable for use in PS3s. This greatly reduces manufacturing costs, as even damaged CPUs can be used in the final product as opposed to simply being tossed into the trash can.

In fact, Kutaragi at one point speculated that those Cell units with 6 functioning SPEs (and thus 2 nonfunctional units) could be paired up in a server to make a 12 SPE 2 CPU core monster.

Finally, to make sure you understand, the PS3 has 8 SPEs (secondary processing elements) and 1 main core processing unit.

   by ascharf85 - 2006-04-14
 » Clarification...

(To #30 Comments)...
Exactly...I decided not to try and go into too much detail. But the main point in lowering the amount of SPEs is to try and save cost of the PS3 due to the yield of the Cell Processor.

It is possible to have more than 8 SPEs, though it probably wont be implemented til after the first revision of the cell. Since the Cell is meant such a broad category of products, the ability to allow for the consumer products that dont require many SPEs, will have a high chip yield since these products will have 6 SPEs or less.
