Kazuo Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. flaunts the Blu-ray format and the PS3 console's capacity - Image 1Nobody can deny the big steps next gen consoles have given gamers in terms of the quality of games coming out right now. Kazuo Hirai affirms this fact as he talks about Sony's Blu-ray format and its place in the entertainment industry today.

The President and Group Chief Operating Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. said that the Blu-ray format was designed to give game developers the absolute biggest canvas on which to create their games on. Considering the 50GB capacity of the Blu-ray disc, this certainly gives developers the space to fit a high definition game all in one disc instead of using multiple DVDs.

Hirai wasn't stingy when it came to praising the PS3's capabilities against its rival consoles such as the Xbox 360. He cited that the high definition games like Resistance: Fall of Man, with its 16 GB size, just wouldn't have been possible without multiple discs if it weren't for the Blu-ray disc neatly wrapping it all up into one package.

He also mentions the flexibility the PS3 has with the amount of downloadable content the console gives the consumer. Be it games or music or movies, the PS3 provides an absolute entertainment package which can be found in the Sony family of companies.

As for the long-term viability of the Blu-ray disc and the online capabilities of the PS3, Hirai had this to say:

The disc is not dead. Far from it. For many years to come there will be a place at the table for disc-based content in the world of entertainment. It is about offering consumers options. Some may like the convenience of downloading a game at home, while others will always want the experience of going to the store and talking to the clerks and other consumers about the games they are interested in. Whichever way a consumer wants to receive their content, we want to have a solution.

 » again?

Why does sony keep praising motorstorm and resistance? They are launch games and not that great. Both could have been done on the 360 (using about 6gb), so what. How about saying how good the new games coming out are?

they also say that all the time, about how good future games will be and how Blu Ray was very useful in developing those games... but even so, either it be current or future games, XBox fanboys reacts like they've been offended and keeps on saying that the PS3 has no games when in fact they don't know sh*it about that cause obviously most of them don't have a PS3 to be able to make a reliable comment regarding the games on that console, even you buddy just got a PS3 just recently...

here's my honest take on that on how the PS3 (for me) has always had good games to justify my purchase.

I bought my PS3 launch day in Australia in March 23 and September just finished, so that makes it six months.

So what good games have i enjoyed on my PS3 for a mere six months?

1. Resistance - having 40 players on a lag-free online multiplayer... on a gaming console!!! tell me that's not impressive, cause by my experience it's hell of a fun!

2. Motorstorm - never liked racing games... ever! and i never thought i'd have such a blast with one!!! Motorstorm is just chaos!!!

3. Oblivion - what XBots will say that it is multiplat? so what? if it is multiplat it shouldn't be counted in the PS3's library? well i have it, and i played it on my PS3 so damn right i'm counting it!!! and i don't even have to explain how awesome that game is!!

4. Ninja Gaiden Sigma - XBots should know pretty well how incredible that game is.

5. Lair - i admit i had trouble with the controls but i do believe that Lair is a peek on what can be done on the PS3.

6. Warhawk - just put my controllers down just now, just cause i need to eat dinner sometime... anybody who likes multiplayer should admit that Warhawk is legit.

7. Heavenly Sword - OMFG!!! wen't thru it three times already.

Now honestly for six months tell me that ain't good gaming??!!! I didn't even mention other games i have... nobody could tell me the PS3 has no good games cause those who do don't know sh*it or doesn't have the money to buy them!

and then i've got Assassins, Rachet, Drake, Folklore, COD4, and Haze lined up for late year purchasse... as a gamer i'm actually being spoiled by my PS3... we don't even have to discuss the 2008 lineup cause everybody knows that...

the PS3 has amazing games.. and i don't want to second guess how Blu Ray played a part in that but one thing is sure because of Blu Ray it can only get better.

Since I have the 360 and PS3, I'm only interested in the PS3 exclusives, unless the PS3 version either comes out sooner or is better. Also since there's so many great shooters for the 360, the PS3 would need a very good one for me to buy it. I want to get Warhawk, but live in an area without high speed internet (which really pisses me off) so I'm waiting for Ratchet and Clank. The only game I have now is Heavenly Sword. I like it, but yeah, it's too short.

good to know you are very well capable of coming up with a very well thought out comeback, u must be a scholar of some sort.

to MCS

tell me about it... i had to upgrade my internet a couple of times already cause the service here in OZ aren't that good.. now i'm paying way too much money for it.

as for Heavenly Sword they should have made the current Hell Mode the default difficulty and came up with a more difficult one as Hell Mode, but i don't know how i'm going to get thru the catapult stages if it was any harder, i damn near fell off my chair trying to control those freakin cannonballs.

» Quixand i have to agree with you here.

I have a PS3 and the games i have which most are on the list is freaking awesome. I feel the only people who complain about the PS3 never really liked Sony products or just rather play Xbox and talk trash.

PS3 has many awesome titles out now but people are just too afraid to try them. The online play is even stellar, i seriously can't wait for the Agency so i can play that game online.

» im a bit fed up actually

when the games werent coming in thick and thin, i was fed up because i felt there wasn't enought choice, so i played my existing games again and again and actually enjoyed them because i wasnt chopping and changing games every 5 secs like i used to do!!!

now theres a lot more games out but my bank balance wont let me go out and buy shedloads of games so really it was better when they were few and far between!!!

i used to go down to the shops on a games release day because it had been a wee while since the last game for the ps3 was out so id be looking forward to that next release!!!

cant keep some folk happy eh??? lol!!
