Sony announces PlayStation 80 GB price drop - Image 1It looks like analyst Michael Pachter was right on the mark when he predicted a possible price cut for Sony's 80 GB PlayStation 3.

The company has just announced that they will be marking down the 80 GB unit's sell price down to US$ 499, effective immediately. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) CEO Jack Tretton had this to say regarding the price drop:

We're pleased to offer the consumer a lower price point without sacrificing the core technology components that make PS3 the most advanced high-definition entertainment system available. Every PS3 comes with a Blu-ray drive, HDMI output, an integrated Wi-Fi connection, Cell Broadband Engine and a built-in hard-drive.

This announcement comes shortly after SCEA officially announced the November 2 launch date for their 40 GB PS3, which won't be backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 games. The 80 GB PS3 retains BC via software software support.

PS3 GREATEST IN YE OLD LAND

   by walker3243 - 2007-10-19
 » i hate it when

i hate it when you americans complain about things being too expensive. do you know how much cheaper stuff is to buy in america than england. the 40gb ps3 here is $600. and games here are $80.

anyway the 80gb ps3 now only $500 in america, should give a great sales boost for ps3

Maybe because they complain they get things cheaper. Certainly worked with the PS3.

" Maybe because they complain they get things cheaper."
- Possibly. A public outcry always gets attention.

» It's kinda just how the country works

It's happened since the beginning when we started the Revolutionary War over taxes raising. They say it was because they themselves didn't vote for the raise in taxes, but then under their own ruling, taxes never got high. In comparison to all the other countries, taxes are really low here. And plus, capitalism only allows the cheapest product of its kind to prosper, unless they find some sort of fault with it like with the xbox 360 having 33% of its units break down. That's also why Sony should be pretty scared by the $200 HD-DVD player. People won't care that Blu-Ray's slightly better, they'll care much more about saving a couple hundred dollars.

is always good. Consoles really shouldn't top $300.

The sooner the better. Then I would be able to play full versions of Heavenly Sword and spring's The Last Remnant.

This is more pleasing.
I'll see when I pick one up then.

btw,
it retains Backward compatibility via software software support?
so you're saying it's software for software?
and does this new software need updates too?
which would make it "software - software for software"

» problem i was thinkin bout

Since US has 60 gig hardware EE BC AND an 80 gig software BC, i wonder if the software updates are the same.

UK as software already but now the have 40 gig version with NO software BC.

I am really dissappointed by the fact that sony came up with multi SkUs after criticising M$s 360. (then again many were complaining bout the price)
