Japan: old 60GB PS3 models return to original price - Image 1

How much is backwards compatibility for your PlayStation 3 worth to you? If you purchased the previous models that were backwards compatible, this wouldn't be a problem for you, but for other gamers who have their eye on the console, this is a question to ponder on.

If you had the chance to buy the old backwards compatible models, would you buy it at double the price of the new model? Well, this is the scenario that Amazon Japan and various Japanese shops are offering their customers.

The current price of the 40 GB model (which isn't backwards compatible) in Amazon Japan is JPY 37,581(US$ 363). The old 20 GB and 60 GB models though, are being offered at almost twice that. It's basically priced at the same level when it first entered the market.

The 20 GB model is being offered for JPY 63,800 (US$ 616), and the 60 GB model is being offered at JPY 74,800 (US$ 723). Shops have also doubled their prices for second hand consoles, from JPY 15,000 (US$ 145) to JPY 40,100 (US$ 388) for the 20 GB model.

Perhaps Sony might consider looking into bringing back backwards compatibility, if there are gamers out there who continue to find that it's still worth it.

It's cheaper to simply buy a new ps2 (around 99$) slim (and white :D) AND a ps3, lol.

how am i supposed to buy a 60gb when the prices is being inflated. how can i change my 20gb unit ps3 with hdd 250gb?

jk, im fine woot!

 » nah...

with 120M PS2 units sold, backwards compatibility is just a space-saver. If they don't want MS to blow them out of the box with a price drop, they'll keep the price low.

If the market wants to pay more, so be it.

   Re: xche78x - 2008-03-04
 » actually

its the auction market thats making the price of these BC units to go sky high.
racketeers and profiteers also taking the opportunity. japan is now the only place to buy these BC PS3s.

I bought an extra new 60GB PS3 on ebay for only $430 including shipping and a new game. Looks like that is going to pay off. Sony will never make a BC model in the future with the Emotion Engine chip, so it's sure to be valuable someday in new condition.

 » Wow

I just got a 60GB @ GameStop on Friday for $349. With trades/credit Ionly paid $151. They thought it was a 40GB when I called, but i got home and it played PS2 games. I then realized how lucky I was.

Lucky you, but gamestop has stupid people working there. Most of the people i see now are geeky losers, who know absolutely nothing about games.

They should at least know that the model is the model your getting. You have to be stupid if you don't check those things.

But still their mistake is "Your" Gain i guess.

But congrats.

 » Ps2 games, I remember those

Wow, I didn't think anybody played ps2 games anymore.
I thought I'd play my ps2 games but compared to ps3 games' graphics, they arent worth my time.

That and my iPhone I'm typing this on right now has twice the procesing speed and ram of a ps2. Just shows you how obsolete the ps2 is now

   Re: PS2GT - 2008-03-04
 » yeah but....

they are lying to the consumer and fan base. back in the day when the ps2 was begining online play(01-02) sony's peeps and ***** all stated that ALL playstions in the future no matter what number will have bc, its in on of the OPMs i think the one about online play with the ps2 maybe august of 02 it was blueish with the circle x square triangle phone jack/cable jack cover(same pic on the 50001N box-the ps2 with the network adaptor preinstalled) or it was later or earlier. i still have it. but reading that and then seeing now that they almost abandoned it now is crap but japan rereleased the launch consoles and they have a new color-SILVER, just go to the japan site and look aty the availible ps3s, they got white black and silver and the 20-80gb ps3s are all availible with prices, heres a link http://www.jp.playstation.com/hardware/ps3/ nvm the 80 its not listed. look theres even dates and everything

   Re: sickofitall - 2008-03-04
» ps2 games are still good

I just recently sold off my PS2, but yes I still do want to play PS2 games. So while I wait for the big PS3 games to come out, at least I can still play them all on one system (upscaled too).

   Re: Datnizzle - 2008-03-04
 » Until...

They come out with Capcom vs. Snk 2 or the GTAtrilogy on the PS3 I need BC.
   by cmonkey99 - 2008-03-04
 » uhhhhhhh, but

If you want to play PS2 games, don't you already have a ps2?
If sony is going to stay competitive against Micro$hit's prices, they have to drop the bc crap.
Also, people were just playing their old PS2 games and using their ps3 as a blu-ray movie player.
In Europe when they dropped BC, the PS3 software sales increased dramatically.
So All it comes down to is Sony wants to be competitive in price while using bleeding edge technology and they're trying to cut useless features like these to do it and increase PS3 software sales at the same time to increase income and attract more development.

Oh yeah, who the hell would want to play games for the system that so far has had the greatest game library to date?
Dumb ass, as far as I can tell, the PS2s gaming library will be superior to the 360 and PS3's for at least 3 years. Not graphically obviously, but game play wise.
