One of the many factors which determine how well a product is doing is its sales. However, before anything else, we'd just like to establish that sales figures don't necessarily dictate overall success. Success and sales might be interdependent, but the latter does not equate to the former. Besides, sales figures themselves are based on a lot of other things like market area, competition, trend, and even obsoletion.

Thus said, we report the facts of Japan's console sales:

  • during the first two days of launch: 88,400 units (as estimated by Enterbrain)
  • from November 13-18: 43,378 units
  • Total drop in sales [(43,378 / 88,400) x 100] = 49.0701%
PS3 sales plummet by 49% in JapanThese are the figures in Japan. An updated number of units sold in the U.S. is not yet available, although as BetaNews reports, it would likely follow a similar pattern (as to how they arrived at that forecast, we can only assume). One issue they bring up, however, is that of Sony not being able to obtain enough Blu-Ray disc drive laser diodes to manufacture enough console units. As for whthe PS3's titles, the chart-topper in Japan lists Ridge Racer 7 sitting on the #29 spot.

You can argue all you want, but these facts (albiet estimated only) are merely being reported and do not necessarily dictate any direct consequence to overall success.

 » Another negative Spin?

Why do I get the feeling this site just loves to spin things in a negative way to bash Sony.

Obviously sales in the second week are hampered by reduced supply, and it just amazes me to no end, that this is not even considered in the article, but than again, I am at the anti-Sony blog site.

 » youre just paranoid

uh, no...concidering in TWO days they sold 88,000 and then over a week they only sold half as many. It's because no one wants a PS3, and the only reason they sold 88k was because of eBay and the people who bought them just to sell it back. Youre just paranoid. This site doesnt hate sony, theres just no good news to report. The ps3 is a failure...

 » @GGG

what negative spin are you crying about they are stating facts, and im pretty sure "sales dropping due to being unable to produce enough bluray lasers" constitutes as considering reduced supply so again what is it your crying about? u prefer they lie and say the ps3 is doing so well it sold out its limited supply lol

If PS3 is so great.... why did I sell mine back to Gamestop this morning!????

the blu-ray drive thing is BS, my father does the contracted work for sony's blu-ray factories. He says this is BS, and they are intentionally limiting supply.

Stop saying it's a manufacturing problem.

 » duh

Uhh, of course.

There's a lack of system availability, of course there's a drop in sales.

They sell out as soon as they hit store shelves, I'd call that a success.

   Re: sakura (Unregistered) - 2006-12-01
 » .

they may be selling out but that still doesnt change the fact that sales are going down thats not even taking to account that most of those systems are on ebay, or should i expect those 20,000 japanese 20 gig ps3s on ebays u.s site to be a hoax?

called supply and demand, the demand is out there, yet the supply is not there. The article is so f*&^in stupid to begin with.

» Has to be the worst spin I have ever seen

Is the blogger on border line retardation?

If there are no units to sell, why would that signal a plummet?

Stupidity FTML. If anything this shows that Sony is continually pushing units out of the factories.

 » flawed math... kind of.

* during the first two days of launch: 88,400 units (as estimated by Enterbrain)
* from November 13-18: 43,378 units
* Total drop in sales [(43,378 / 88,400) x 100] = 49.0701%

First week: 88,400/88,400 = 100%
2nd week: 43,378/43,378 = 100%
Rate of change = 0%

There is a 0% change in sales.

spun for positive.

 » thank you

what is the point of this stupid article. if sales have dropped by 49% then there should be 51% of the shipments still on store shelves, PLEASE tell me where they are...

unless your smart enough to factor in that fact that they only shipped half the number of units that were available at launch since then.... which percentage wise is a number around 49%, coincidence, i think not.

retarded article, fire the writer

I seriously cant wait for next year. People act like the Ps3 is gimped yet release titles went hand and hand with 2nd gen 360 titles.

Sorry but Ps3's 07 line up is far better than the 360's.

Sorry but most but upcoming 360 games look horrible. I think Mass Effect is the only good looking game.

 » haha

keep telling yourself that

   Re: nub (Unregistered) - 2006-12-01
 » Wow

The PS3 had one of the worst launch title line-ups in recent memory, far worse than the 360's. The only good game is Resistance, the rest are sub-par (Ridge Racer 7) or just plain mediocre (Gundam Crossfire).

The only amazing looking game announced for the PS3 is Metal Gear Solid 4 :/ While 360 has Mass Effect, Bioshock, Halo 3, Turok, Splinter Cell 5, and more. And that's just 07

» My, what a dazzling display...

...

It has all been said, but let's say it again.

Without knowing how many units were on offer between the 13th-18th, it's not really possible to say whether selling 48k units is good or bad..

U PHAIL QJ!!!!

   by lol (Unregistered) - 2006-12-01
 » lol

wtf is a 2nd gen 360 tittle? thats impossible 1 out of 3 ppl who bought the ps3 did not buy a game.i only say this because i have a ps3 and there is only 1 game is worth my time and thats resistance and its impossible that it did aswell as gears of war because that would mean that there are ppl who bought resistance that did not have a console. and whose the moron who wrote this article with the flawed math.

   by hush404 - 2006-12-01
 » OMFG.

OMFG. If you've got 43,378 units to sell and sell them all it isn't a 49% decrease in sales from the larger shipment sent before hand. A 49% decrease in availability is more accurate but them Japs are still ripping the system off of the shelves in no time flat. Thus sales are still at a flaming 100%.

 » QJ sucks lately

All QJ is concern about now is traffic and QJ will do anything it can including bashing the PS3 to bring in more traffic.

 » japos looking after themselves

wait a minute

88K launch + 50K the next week. The Japanense are well catered
for. It's going to be a drought for the rest of the world for the next
6 months if this nationalistic fervor continues. I can't blame them
though, they obviously are a proud patriotic company.
Just the rest of us expect to be shafted for the near future, don't
assume you will get a machine off the shelf soon, the going price
is on ebay. Prepare for mid-winter blizzard console campout!

More important don't take anything they mention straight, man
their porkies just keep getting bigger.
