There's an interesting survey conducted by small online research firm WhatJapanThinks regarding the preferred consoles by Japanese kids. The population consisted of around 1,165 elementary school students and the results are quite intriguing and interesting:

  • Japanese survey: kids prefer SNES, NES over PSP - Image 1 Nintendo DS 82.2%
  • Nintendo Gameboy Advance 39.8%
  • Sony PlayStation 1, 2 or 3 37.4%
  • Nintendo Wii 35.3%
  • Nintendo Gamecube 31.4%
  • Nintendo Gameboy, Gameboy Micro 19.8%
  • Nintendo 64 15.2%
  • Nintendo Super Famicom (SNES) 15.1%
  • Nintendo Famicom (NES) 11.9%
  • Sony PlayStation Portable 10.5%
  • Microsoft Xbox 5.8%
  • Sega Saturn 5.1%
  • Sega Dreamcast 4.8%
  • Other 16.4%
Take note that this survey is not reflective of the whole Japanese market and is just true on a certain market segment. Nonetheless, like we said, the results are quite interesting.

Yeah that is really interesting. I thought the psp had a bigger market.
And why prefer the (s)nes over the psp? They're called emulators :P

   Re: Wicked_Insider - 2007-09-30
 » This is not news...

We all know that NES would have come up as the
favorite because thats all the Japanese care about.

When they are born the doctor slaps them on the
ass and proclaims them to be Nintendo Fanboys
for life.

This is to be expected and is "NOT" news!

 » JFC!

They are indoctrinated since birth to love only
Nintendo products. They have no opinion of their
own. It's simply Nintendo or nothing at all.

This is not fair news! of course all these kids
would have Nintendo stuff, all hand me downs
from their older siblings and or parents.

We here all know the truth and thats, that the
PSP kicks Nintendo's ass. What can Nintendo
do that the PSP can't do? NADA!

That comes to way over 100%, so this has to have been about what consoles the kids have. Their parents probably have a (S)NES in the attic and they added that in.

I want to know why the 360 isn't there at all, and the Playstations have been grouped together as one console.

"Sony PlayStation 1, 2 or 3 37.4%"
Why would you combine them all like that? It totally defeats the purpose.

... is that it can play NES/SNES/GB games too.

 » wtf?

Ds and gameboy alone are over 100%. This survey is fake!

   by god0fgod - 2007-09-30
 » Ugh?

It doesn't add up to 100% so I can't trust it.

   by dark420bishop - 2007-09-30
 » well DUH

It's not marketed toward elementary school kids and kids that age can't afford it on their own. DUH. No wonder it scored so low. Doesn't take much to figure out why.

Multiple choice answers dont add up to 100% Einsteins.

These were the answers to "What kinds of video games machines do you often play on?"

lol the only reason i looked at this article was cause the main picture was of the good old red and white NES controllers! I use to have one of those as a child, great memories. Good old memories of blowing into the cartridge to make games magically work :D

 » why its over 100%

Okay ppl quit flaming about 'its over 100% its bull*&&^'... This was a multiple answer test ( = you can check more than one answer in a question). This means that little jimmy, who counts as one person may give 3 answers. So... we will get 200 kids giving 500 (or whatever amount more than 200) answers, which gives us over 100%..... If you wish it to not exceed 100% in maths you standarise/normalize the results(something like an avarage..) nuf said

 » interesting.....

ok, first off"!!!!

check out where the wii is, meaning that the jap kids prefer the ps gens than the wii!!! yet its the current top console on sale in japan!!

second!!!

well you didnt honestly expect the 360 to be on the list did you???

its dying a death in japan, hence other!!!

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-10-01
 » WTF???

This is a perfect example of why the Japanese gaming market is sooo fu*ked up. There is no logic or reason to any of the results.

Sega Saturn better than a Dreamcast?
Stupid Wii almost better than all 3 Playstations?

Why can't a low priced, very capable HD gaming system with far more quality HD games and increasing localized content like the XBOX 360 still not penetrate the market with last gen toy systems like the Wii? Look at this survey for the answer!

Anything with a Nintendo logo on it will sell in Japan. I mean anything!
