Ó

Let's take a break from E3 for a moment now and focus our attention on something much closer to home. silenoz of PS3Hax has got some cool tricks up his sleeves, and it's thanks to this tricks that he managed to launch a simple java game on the PS3 game OS, with BD-J (Blu-ray Disc Java) functionality.

Say what?!? Yes, it's an honest to goodness breakthrough, and we can just imagine all the wonderful possible exploit that could come out of this hack. But first, before we drown in our own drool, details on this hack.

silenoz apparently used the game with BD-J functionality. If in case you're as much of a noob as I am on this, BD-J basically allows bonus content on your Blur-ray disc titles. In other words, it gives that little extra to your copy to totally pawn the standard DVD by allowing you network access, picture-in-picture and access to local storage.

Okay, so here's the tutorial for you to launch the game, homebrew style:
  • Un-Zip file
  • Copy it to the root of a USB/Flash drive
  • Go to the device in the video menu and launch "AVCHD"
  • Go to BONUS and click GAME to launch Blaster Bunny.
This has been confirmed to work on all PS3s regardless of firmware and region - even 2.41. If you don't believe still, then ask the dishes watch this video clip of Blaster Bunny BJ-D in action on the PS3.

Thanks a heap to tipsters: Hueh, tcraw77813

Shame that it's illegal to share, since it contains files ripped from a Blu-Ray.

Oh, and the Java game itself comes straight from Sun's HDCookBook website...

   Re: Justingraziano - 2008-07-17
 » ...

The point of this was to prove that the PS3 can launch JAVA homebrew, so what if they didn't make the game? I'm sure there will be many devs making JAVA games soon. And who cares if the Blu-Ray rip is legal or not? If you look right above you you'll see Google ads for illegal websites that claim to let you "download PSP games legally" yet only link you to torrent sites but no one cares about these. I doubt anyone will care if the Blu-Ray rip is legal or not.

   Re: FreePlay - 2008-07-17
 » ...

Go f*ck yourself. You know Google controls the ads, not QJ.

Do you ever talk about anything but ads?

BTW, the files come from here:

https://hdcookbook.dev.java.net/files/documents/7269/101354/hdcookbook-bin-bundle-20080624.zip

   Re: Justingraziano - 2008-07-17
 » @ FreePlay

QJ chooses to put them up *****. There are dozens of ad networks (some of them monitor all ads to make sure there are no illegal sites) but QJ chooses Google so they can score more dope. And I didn't ask for your opinion. Every damn time something like this comes out on the PS3 you complain. Get a *****ing life and do it yourself if you think it's that easy. You did the exact same thing with Team ICE yet I don't see you coming out with anything for the PS3.

"Every damn time something like this comes out on the PS3 you complain. Get a *****ing life and do it yourself if you think it's that easy. You did the exact same thing with Team ICE yet I don't see you coming out with anything for the PS3. "

Because every damn time it comes out, it's something LAME from PS3HAX.

Team ICE was a bunch of fakers who released apps from the Sony SDK as their own work.

PS3Hax is saying someone from their site helped make this, even though it's a sample from the official Sun Blu-Ray Java devkit.

Why don't you go make some more YouTube videos where you b*tch and moan about QJ's ads? F*cking mongoloid.

Justingraziano, you really have no ideia who you're talking to, do you?
Every time Freeplay complains he's right. Don't try argue with him, seriously -_-

 » Well

Ya agree all you want everybody but please don't wonder why 2 years after the PS3 came out there is still no hacks or exploits. The reason is because monkeys (like this ***** exist). Don't need to make anymore vids *****Play. I have something else in mind for this site. Something big. You'll see and you'll be sorry you ever scammed me.

   Re: FearEvil19 - 2008-07-18
 » Ah

Ah I see.So if it wasn't for Freeplay, these kind of hacks would work and be 100% legal o.0

   Re: Justingraziano - 2008-07-18
 » ...

It's not just FreePlay, it's all the morons who dis the hacks like this. Then the devs don't want to continue cause every one is hating them. It doesn't matter how this was made, it's not supposed to be launchable by the PS3 thus it is a hack or exploit of some sort. If people would stop hating on every single hack or exploit that the PS3 gets there would probably have already been custom firmware on the PS3!

   Re: FearEvil19 - 2008-07-18

So if people don't report flaws, that basically means that they do not exist?

2.Justingraziano, im actually confused as to whom you are, by reading freeplays post i think you were responsible for a hack ???

Have to fully agree with FreePlay... except he isn't really explaining it properly.

This is just a Blu-ray menu playing through.
Like your DVD menu on any DVD you've ever bought.
It's just a piece of Java, nothing native and nothing remotely interesting!!
Also YouTube makes me fuckin laugh

@emcp: Let me put say this in a way only brainwashed FreePlay humpers like yourself would understand. Sony does NOT allow you to load a Blu-Ray disk off of anything but a Blu-Ray disk. Do you understand that? Can you put that through your head? Only off a Blu-Ray disk, no other way, none. However, regardless of how simple it might be, someone figured out how to load a Blu-Ray disk off of a USB drive. Understand? Now, a Blu-Ray disk can be loaded off of an unofficial source. Understand? Can you understand that someone found a way to load a Blu-Ray off of an unofficial source? When you process that through your head let me know.

@F.I.G: Believe me he isn't gay. Gay people have common sence, something this moron doesn't know the meaning to. In fact the only thing he knows how to do is complain about people at least ATTEMPTING to hack the PS3. Everytime someone makes progress this friggin (most likely employed by Sony) idiot complains that there hack or find is useless. He did the same exact thing with Team ICE which is most likely why they left. Sure, there stuff was simple BUT it allowed unsigned code to run on a PS3, something FreePlay could NOT figure out how to do and never did.

Firmware 2.42 anyone? :P

   by mreverdred01 - 2008-07-17
 » idk...

Has anyone tried this out for themselves yet? at 0:34 in the video you can see the monitor he's using is a Dell, meaning he's probably got a computer attached to that monitor as well, so he could be doing anything with that. The whole thing could just be a video. He uses a PS3 controller, but there's been programs out for years now which let you use a PS3 controller on the computer. Plus, that could easily be faked with somebody off screen really pushing the buttons. I won't believe it until somebody here confirms that it worked for them as well. I don't really want to try it out, personally.

 » Java code...

...can be signed and verified with private digital ID's.

While it's good that someone figured this out, sooner or later, I think Sony will be using signatures for the BDJ contents.

Even though that's a possibility, the worse case is if Sony decided to flick around PlayStation 3's JVM. So unless there's actually a way to get an unsigned code to run on the actual PlayStation 3 OS, we're quite far from getting the homebrew. Yes, this is small milestone in getting there but let's just hope and see.

This exploit would be somehow similar to the UT3 "Hello, World!" done a few months back. It does run user created code through a virtual machine but not directly on the native machine -Just to clarify things out.

   by GW2 - 2008-07-17
 » um..

so the ps3 may get java based homebrew? so basically some little games and nothing too powerful? or can java make emus and stuff? i dont know much about java.

   Re: extra2000 - 2008-07-17
» It depends on the VM

Java code does not directly execute machine instructions. It has to be compiled to byte codes first then the VM will interpret the byte code to tell the machine what it needs to do.

There may some exploits that can be found when executing Java code so it's still possible to lead on to something big. But the countermeasures are foreseeable so, surely, sooner or later, Sony will (like always) attempt to stop this if it gets to something we want that they don't.

It may not be much yet, but it's a foot in the door. Let's hope Sony doesn't slam the door in our faces. ;)

   by Mentality - 2008-07-18

Unfortunatly I pretty sure this will not lead to anything other than what you guys see and maybe some different Java games, I can see this blu-ray feature allows you to access local files, but its never going to give is flash access and be able to write to it.

Also what it the bonus1 thing in there, it askes for a code you type in a few then it tells you the code is BLURAY you type that in and get some flasing image which just goes off. Is it just basically saying the thing was made possible by blu-ray which we knew already?

   Re: emcp - 2008-07-18
 » ofcourse

it wont
the VM obviously wont have access to flash as it wouldnt need too

its just like what extra2000 said, it allows for an exploit
theres a big difference between an exploit and homebrew/loader/flasher

the exploit will let ya run some C code, which will have better functionality, it just needs to bypass checks and using java this may be possible

an exploit allows for code to be injected, think of the twilight hack it crashes zelda and then zelda loads the code from the memstick

the game is crashed by a savedgame, with a edited horsename, do you think the data contained withing the savedgame is able to execute code, no it just allows the opportunity for unsigned code to be run

the twilight hack is similar to the gta hack
   by emcp - 2008-07-18
 » mm

not much really, its something and i was excited until someone explained an exploit could easily be found,

if their was no real risk of an exploit, sony may have actually allowed us to use it, as theyre always bragging about considering homebrew, yet do nothing

anyway something like xbox homebrew, should be set up,
having to subscribe etc, i guess its something......

anyway, WHY DO PEOPLE CONSTANTLY RELEASE THIS NEWS, IF THERES A POSSIBILITY OF AN EXPLOIT KEEP IT SECRET, GET A GOOD WIDE TEAM UP, WHO COULD GET ENOUGH PROGRAMMING DONE, TO PREVENT SONY PATCHING THE PS3 AGAIN, OR BANNING YA FROM PSN

just keep low, and work on it, this way it might remain a secret until something substantial can form

   Re: lavino - 2008-07-18
» it is just a matter of time

If SONY can patch it they will do it eventually regardless how much you can keep it quiet. They have the power to issue a new firmware update. For those who won't update it it makes no difference now or 12 months later. For those who patch it the option is gone.
