ps3When it comes to the last word on the PS3 Dave Karraker, Sony's newly appointed senior director of communications, is the man.

In an interview with IGN, Karakker says "
We will have 1 to 1.2 million units available by December 31 in North America... more than double what Xbox 360 sold through during the same period (TRST data) and should assure there aren't significant stock dips at retail."

Karraker was responding to the news that sent chills down many future PS3 owners' spine - that only 400,000 units of PS3 will be available for North America and 100,000 units in Japan on launch date.

The PS3 production reduction was caused by the unexpected shortage of the blue laser diode which is also slowing down the production of Blu-ray players. But the Big K says supply of the spare part is most likely to ease up boosting the PS3 production output.

Karraker did say the cut back in production will hurt Sony's image but he said the company is "confident that as the units are made available in each given territory, we will have no problem selling through our entire inventory."

And that's the official word!

 » Good news

Thats good news for all you americans/japs out there (I live in the UK however). 1 thing I'm wondering is why is this news posted on 'psp'updates??

Shouldn't it be on PS3 updates? Or are you just trying to get this news out there to everyone possible...

Just curious...Cheers!

I like the way they can send that many to America over that period but fail to produce any for the PAL players.

Thanks for pointing that out, Manchester bloke. It should be on the PS3 site.

mbslrm, you have a point there, but the news should just go to the PS3 site. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks!

 » So...

Does that mean they plan on shipping 800,000 to 1 million units in Japan by the end of the year or have their projections taken another plunge? Like every other recent announcement coming from Sony, I'll take it with a grain of salt.

 » yeah

japan get 100,000 units?! wtf? ok, i live in the uk so i'm a little upset by the news, but why on earth are they prioritising the US over everything else? the only reason i can think of is that the US is the only territory xbox360 will actually sell well in this xmas, so sony are trying to fight back... but poor old japan! they'll all be buying the wii won't they, it's totally inevitable.

» Japan will get more shortly afterwards

They are expecting another 900 units or more for Japan by the end of dec.

Actually the president of Sony said yesterday that by the end of the year Japan and the US will get more than 2 million. Is just that Gaming sites wouldn't get as many hits is they posted that instead of "OMG ONLY 100k UNITS FOR JAPAN! AND 400K FOR US" ;-) this includes Qj.net

 » He didn't say....

by Christmas, he said "through holidays".

SONY said that they're still going to ship 4 mln units by the end of a year.

How could anyone believe that there will be only 100 thousands PS3s for Japan on launch day? I mean come on.

I tell you something: This is the most arrogant phrase I have ever heard (The last one). Do they really think they are going to sell all they program like before? F.U.C.K'em! They won't see a single penny from me! Such an arrogant piece of crap.
Everyone of you should really think about what they just did to millions of people! They ***** in our faces and you say: Hooray! We'll MAYBE get it on December 31st...
Lame fanboys!

Damn you Sony...

"We will have 1 to 1.2 million units available by December 31 in North America... more than double what Xbox 360 sold through during the same period (TRST data) and should assure there aren't significant stock dips at retail."

More than double yeah.... But then again the 360 got released in Europe at the same time!!!!
I like the MS strategy more than the Sony one....

 » why US over JP?

simple: the 360 is selling the best over here: 4 million in the US, 1 million in the UK, "what's a 360?" in Japan.

they know they have the Japanese market locked down when it comes to consumers that want something uber high tech and powerful (the Wii is cheap enough to not be a threat. if someone has $200 to burn on a Wii, it's only a matter of time before they have $600 to burn on a PS3).

If Sony can catch up with Microsoft on it's home turf by years end, or March 2007, they have a nice chance of overtaking them later in 2007 when console numbers are steady. you have to think about it strategically. in Japan, the 360 has failed. miserably. the only alternative is a PS3. Sony's not worried about Japan.

the UK delay sucks, but at least the European market will be getting the least buggy systems out of the bunch. the US will be the guinea pigs this year, but we'll also be the deciding factor in who wins the console war.

by proving to the rest of the world (and Microsoft), that 1 to 2 million US gamers are willing to pay $600 for a PS3 (come on, we know it's going to sell out), they're sending a message to Microsoft saying, "If we can sell this much in your home turf, imagine how much we're going to sell in ours, where you have no presence at all."

they also understand that the European market is a lot more patient than us spoiled, arrogant Americans. if we don't get what we want when we want it, we balk and purchase something else. Europeans are more firm and resolute in their purchasing decisions. if they want something, and it gets delayed, they'll patiently wait until it becomes available.

Sony knows what it's doing. it's like Final Fantasy Tactics. they're positioning themselves as best they can for the win. they're looking at the most fickle market(US), and aiming to please it first. then move on to the more loyal markets (UK and Japan), who are more understanding about things like delays and component shortages.

 » That's cool and all

But I hate how he says "1 to 1.2 million AVAILABLE" and then says that's double what the 360 SOLD in the same time. Is there anybody at Sony who ISN'T an arrogant piece of sh*t?

It could be possible that Sony might sale all PS3 by the end of the year. This product is going to be really hard to find for thoes who want one. There is only going to be about half a million or more for the North America while Japan get the rest.
The PS3 will be a rare piece of candy this holiday season.

» This is what i think...

Now I will be the first to admit I don't know anything about marketing ploys and angles and all that other stuff but I believe the PS3 is going to be focused more in US then Japan is simply this. In the US the psp is a nice hit and ds is still there, however, in Japan the DS is horrible ahead of the psp and people are loving it there and are wanting many many games for it. So the focus there is ds and nintendo sure sure ps3 is still wanted but not like it is in the states and sony sees this and is saying well US will sell more for us so off we go.
