Kaz Hirai

Usually we frown upon this kind of inter-corporation bashing (even if it does make for sensational headlines such as the one above) but this time we have to kind of just stand there in stunned amazement thinking "way to grow a pair Kaz!" Incendiary comments of this nature are usually reserved for the manly men types (at least as manly as being a PR dude for a videogame company allows) such as Peter Moore, Reggie, Phil Harrison, and now and again good ol' Kenny. That's why we were somewhat surprised to wake up to these comments from Sony's own Kaz Hirai apparently made in the latest issue of PlayStation Magazine:

PSM: Sony and Microsoft seem to be taking the exact same path.

Hirai: We seem to. Every time we go down a path, we look behind and they're right there - we just can't shake these guys. I wish that they would come up with some strategies of their own, but they seem to be going down the path of everything we do. If you look at their strategy in other business areas as well, they tend to do that.

Hirai:...And the other thing is, you take a look at, for example, the fact that we incorporate the Blu-ray drive from day one. You're not going to be asking me, 'So, talk to me about this Blu-ray add-on that you have. Does it work for games? Is it just for movies?' That's exactly the kind of pitfall you fall into if you launch something that's too early, too premature...

Ouch! Maybe it seems all the more scathing because it's coming from Kaz Hirai, the "RIIIIIIDGE RAAAAACER!" guy, but talk about a one-two sucker punch! Sigh... why is it that we hang on every word these guys utter?

Nothing insulting here. Nasty comments Moore makes are what people frown on.

» Kaz Hirai needs to show me a PS3 playing a Blu-Ray movie or STFU!

At least Microsoft has a tangible piece of hardware (Xbox 360). The only Blu-Ray drives I have seen so far come attatched to $1000+ investments which aren't manufacured by Sony meanwhile the release of Sony's dedicated Blu-Ray players seems to get pushed more and more to the back of the calander.

» Chavagnatze, the ps3 hasnt been released

Your comments make little to no sense. Kaz is talking about strategy and demographic. MS is definitely following Sony's heels. MS doesn't even consider Nintendo a contender (read most of their interviews).

MS is going after Sony, that's Kaz message. Can you explain your comment on Blu-Ray? Why would you see a blu-ray player at 499 if the PS3 hasn't been release? What Kaz was trying to state is that MS wanted to release their system before the PS3 but still wanted to follow Sony's strategy however this caused them to fall into a pitfall of having to release an add-on that doesn't bring anything to gaming. Sony does have a concrete system to compete with the 360, it's call PS2, which by the way is kicking the 360's butt.

» Actually sony has the online strategy first

Problem was that they didn't include a modem or broadband adaptor so adoption was poor. That plus there were not many online gamers out there, it didn't make much sense for Sony to go this route. This has changed in this next generation. In contrast the Xbox and 360 came at a right time for online gaming.

Therefore again MS was just following, but with online services they did a great job. However your talking about a company that released 2 systems in 3 year's time before Sony release a new system. Sony gave them plenty of time to make things better but they have only marginally improved on the current systems. PS3 comes now, not marginally improved but really bringing us to the next generation of playstations. Online gaming can finally be good on a playstation system. They are not copying but instead can now finally deliver the online promise made long ago.

» Console Sales and other thoughts....

A majority of people can't afford to pay $300 or $400 for a new console and then spend $60 a game, so they see the PS2 listed at $130 and games for $40 or $50 as a bargain to enter the world of console games so thats why PS2 is neck to neck with Xbox 360 sales because of it being such a bargain and having a huge library of games. The PS3's graphical and computing power is said to be a wash compared to the Xbox 360's, so the only thing it comes down to is the fact that you can save $200 by buying a 360, which has superior online capabilities and next-gen games at the moment and when the PS3 launches (over 150+). If people are really interested in buying a Hi-Def DVD player and using their gaming system to watch movies then PS3 does look like a deal (compared to $1000 for other Blu-Ray only dvd players), but people need to realize its a gaming system first and the games are what it comes down to in the end, so 360 has a hell of a head start (MS says 10 million 360's sold by PS3 launch) and their first-party games look incredible. Also, if movies are your main motivation for the PS3, you can buy an HD-DVD add-on for yoru 360, which would be better anyways considering the problems they are having with blu-ray picture quality and encoding. Just my opinion so take it as you may....I'm still buying a PS3 too, so whatever, i just get frustrated at hearing people rant and rave about one system or the other...they all have their perks and problems, just comes down to what you want out of your gaming machine!

» Sony failed to deliver what they promised online!

Dreamcast had online before PS2! Sony failed to provide the online service they promised (jacked into the Matrix on the PS2 yet?). MS delivered on their online promises with XBL, and this is the service Sony are now following for the PS3.

The XBox was launched in November 2001, XBox 360 was launched November 2005. Hence 2005-2001 = 4 Years.

XBox 360 is a great improvement over the XBox, just as the PS3 will be a great improvement over the PS2. Suggesting the 360 is just only a marginal improvement over current systems is pure nonsense.

"They are not copying but instead can now finally deliver the online promise made long ago."

XBL has set the standard that gamers now expect from an online service on consoles. Sony has to deliver this level of service and more, and that is what they are trying to do for the PS3. Therefore they ARE copying, and copying a service which they had nothing but criticisms for last gen.

being an allround unbiast person (okay, myb a little biast to nintendo, but i do own ps2 and 360!) this was just hilarious; the fact that they say that microsoft copy them is histerical: oh, so you haven't been copying nintendo for the past 8 years? please, and as for the online stategy, sony may of started it, but microsoft brought inovation and easyness to it.

Hmm, who lead on D-pads, analog sticks, analog triggers, HDD, online, wireless joysticks, motion joysicks, CDs, DVDs, 3D, etc.?

Let's see: Nintendo, Nintendo, Sega, Microsoft, Microsoft, Nintendo, Nintendo, PC, PC, PC, etc.

Oh that's right, $ony do have UMD and BRD. . . That's nice; ten years in the game industry and just two doomed media formats to speek of for innovation. Great work $ony. What arrogance.

i's rather have an add-on of either player, than one in my system... at this point in time it is not necessary for games to be produced on next-gen formats... dvds still have much space to use, as pre-rendering becomes phased out. i'm sorry, but i may like Blue-ray better, an HD dvd add on seem so much sweeter. microsoft gave me a choice, and i may not even buy one at all... but i have that choice...

Ok 4 years, but really MS abandon the xbox after only 3 years as development geared towards the 360.

Dreamcast and PS2 both failed on their online promise. Why? because of the adoption. As I mention before, online gaming just wasn't great then. MS on the other hand took a gamble and their timing was much better and although they wasted a lot of money in their investment since adoption was still poor. 360 improves on this yet again.

The jump from the xbox and 360 is about the same as the dreamcast to the XBOX both of which are of the same generation.

"XBL has set the standard that gamers now expect from an online service on consoles."

Yes no one is arguing that but it wasn't anything new.

Kaz Hirai is a *****en joke, at this years E3 sony press conference, he looked like he was gonna die, he looked sooo old compared to last years, cough GREY HAIR....I dont hate sony, no really i dont, i think there a great company that releases good products here and there, but lately whats been coming out of sonys mouth is COMPLETE BULL*****...i hope they fix up before launch, i really do hope so

People, all corps copy from others. Who came up with it first means nothing!! It's who comes up with it and Patent's it to make money off the others who want to use it!

Yea, MS may have had the online biz for 4 years, but Blizzard and others have had their online systems longer. They may not be as many features and such, but it is out there before MS. So, MS is stealing, I mean barrowing, from others as usual.

   by Yaz (Unregistered) - 2006-06-27
 » Actually...

Hawk, the XBox is a console not a PC. MS took online and made it work on consoles in a way few believed would be successful after seeing online on the Dreamcast. Prior to the XBox, the attitude was that online belongs to PCs (some PC gamers still say that today), and that online gaming on consoles was a joke. XBL changed that view!

Even with the introduction of XBL, there were many skeptics insisting that going for broadband only and ignoring 56K users was a BIG mistake (including Sony), and those who believed it would fail claiming no-one would be willing to pay for online services.

XBL set the standard gamers now EXPECT from online gaming on consoles. You may not like MS, but atleast give credit were it's due, and imo, MS deserves credit for XBL.

I am just saying that after everything that everyone has said the Xbox was shown at some point playing a game before its release. The PS3 has only been shown in the devkit form showing product demos.

Kaz Hirai is making comments on the HD-DVD drive for Xbox 360 while dedicated blu-ray players made by Sony cant even come to the shelves when they are supposed to.

 » Graphical and Power Wash??

To anyone who is saying that the 360 and ps3 have the same power and graphic ability... your dumb... how can you say that the xbox has the same power when its listed that the ps3 has twice as much speed and a graphics card 3 times as powerful as the one in the 360. And another point on the price.. ps3 = 500 (this includes a bl-ray player) 360 = 400 + 100(for hd-dvd add on which is only for movies and not games) = 500 so with the 360 you can have a hd-dvd player for the same price as a ps3... although no games will be available for it and the 360 will forever be capped with how far they can take a game graphically, where the ps3 is now taking gamers the real " next generation" of gaming and thats with blu-ray technology.

 » Er hem...

"Ok 4 years, but really MS abandon the xbox after only 3 years as development geared towards the 360. "

The XBox (and GC) were LATE last gen. MS didn't want to be late again. Therefore they had no choice but to cut short the lifespan of the XBox, which in case you haven't noticed, is not the market leader.

"Dreamcast and PS2 both failed on their online promise. Why? because of the adoption. As I mention before, online gaming just wasn't great then. MS on the other hand took a gamble and their timing was much better and although they wasted a lot of money in their investment since adoption was still poor. 360 improves on this yet again."

MS didn't waste money on XBL. The investment made for XBL had to be made at sometime, there are no cheap ways around it. The service for XBox and XBox 360 today is that same service, updated and improved since it's first introduction.

BTW, the adoption rate for online on the 360 is significantly better than that of the original XBox, and is very much related to the adoption rate of broadband in homes worldwide.

"The jump from the xbox and 360 is about the same as the dreamcast to the XBOX both of which are of the same generation. "

Stop talking nonsense. Developers working on BOTH consoles consider the 360 and PS3 to be on par in terms of power, with the 360 having the edge in some areas (GPU) and the PS3 in others (CPU). Eg, from May this year;

http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/704/704524p2.html

"Magnus Högdahl: The PS3 will have a content size advantage with Blu-ray and a CPU advantage for titles that are able to utilize a lot of the SPUs. The Xbox 360 has A SLIGHT GPU ADVANTAGE and its general purpose triple-core CPU is relatively easy to utilize compared to SPUs. I expect that it will be near impossible to tell Xbox 360 and PS3 screenshots apart."

The PS3 is only slightly more powerful than the 360 (thanks to Cell), perhaps 20% more overall at best. So I guess that means the PS3 is only a marginal improvement over current systems too. *rolls eyes*

LOL! Sure 'super friend', now read the comments from a DEVELOPER working on BOTH consoles in my post above. You know, a guy who actually knows what he's talking about rather than some anonymous gamer online who thinks he's an expert just because he knows how to read. ;)

Wow, everyone's getting all defensive. The Emotion Engine was an innovative CPU, and in fact if it wasn't for this chip the Cell never would have come into existence (this is because the SPUs share some architecture with the EE from PS2). Cell is an ENORMOUS innovation that Sony initiated and followed through with. Even the Xenon is innovative in that we suddenly have a triple core design on IBM's side, one that they can easily move into the PC sector (well, if they change the architecture to be out-of-order).

Innovation is a mix of creating brand new ideas and merging them with ideas that already work. Some of you act like Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft are just stealing from each other, and really that just brings on an endless argument.

 » Whos copying who

Xbox Live is a copy of what has been a standard for years. PC online gaming is bug, Xbox Live copies PC online systems.

The first PC online systems used the same type of matchmaking that Xbox Live usues now. You have a host and all the clients connect to the host. As PC games have evolved so has the online system of PC games. Now there are dedicated servers with high performance hardware to allow excess of 30 players to connect and play with very low latency.

Xbox Live is still a last generation online system. It offers no new improvements from when it launched on the original Xbox. Videos, photos and themes arent improvements on Xbox Live, its just added features. Xbox Live has the potential to use the same system that PCs use now, FFXI has proven that.

The PS3 needs to implement a system where a mass of players can join servers dynamically instead of having a player be a host and everyone else a client.

The Xbox360 console was indeed poorly launched. It was plauged with hardware problems and overheating problems. You have to assume that people are going to play the power supply on the carpet sence thats where usually the power strip and every other power cord is going to.

You have to assume that people are going to jerk the console from tripping over cables or acidently bumping into the console.

You have to be able to have a console operate in the worse case you can think of. If a console does not operate for a full intended gaming period and overheats, then you have a poorly designed console.

I cant play my Xbox360 for more then an hour or so because during hot days my room reaches temperatures in the 80s and then the system starts blinking saying that its too hot.

For how loud the system fans are and that the PSU is external, the system should never give me overheating problems. Id rather have a console designed and tested instead of a rushed console like the xbox360.
