Ó

There was once this development company that thought: Okay, so we've done other flying shooters before and we've got to make a game for the PS3, what can we do? Well we have to take advantage of the High-def so it better animate well, and since we've done flyers before, we better work on what we're good at. This time though let's add something new. Great, so what flies, is cool, amazing to animate, looks bad-ass, and is effective on the ground?

Duh! Dragons.

So now that we've got some stuff for this game done and then the motion sensor prototypes of the console are in, what do we do with it? Easy! let's change the control scheme up a bit.

This is basically how the Lair development went. Well, actually it's a lot more complicated than this. Just think of the above paragraphs as a short entertaining version of it. Anyway, if you're not satisfied with that, here's a video interview by IGN of Factor 5's Julian Eggebrecht.

It's a nice short clip filled with Lair goodies and gameplay details. It should also give you an inside look into how the team famous for Rogue Squadron got dragon fever. There's an interesting bit in the end of the interview where he says that Lair couldn't really be done on any other console. The Wii would have the motion-sensing, yes, but it wouldn't have the graphics and the power to transition from ground to air combat seamlessly. And the controls for the Xbox 360 aren't what they want it to be.

Well, since console related stuff is a flame-bait-ish topic, we'll stop talking about that, and leave it all up to you guys. Well what do you think of Lair? Is it a must get?

Which is EXACTLY the same thing he said about Rogue Squadron on the GC. Julian always boasts about achieving results on their console of choice that according to him a) no other console could do, and b) no other developer has achieved.

In fact, he even said in one interview that if the XBox could do what they were doing on the GC for RS, he'll eat a broom. About a year later, he admitted that the XBox could achieve the same thing, but it was the PS2 that couldn't.

Hmmm. :)

LOL! Yes I remember that too (actually I'm amazed someone else here remembers). And you are right about Julian, he was also the same when developing Rogue Squadron for the N64.

I don't think you can find the original interview today where he talks about the XBox and eating a broom (I think it was the late dailyradar.com or agn.com), but you can find a reference to it if you search google groups for Julian + Rogue + Squadron + Broom.

"If the X-box can handle this i eat a broom (german proverb )" :)

 » Thanks. :D

I probably remember because for almost a whole year, Julian went on and on about the capabilities of the GC and it's efficiency and power, and how the XBox will not be able to match it because of unified memory problems (which they had experience of on the N64), and numerous other reasons.

Of course, Nintendo fanboys lapped it up, and constantly brought up Julian's comments to attack the XBox, claiming the N64 was better because it was more efficient and the XBox is only more powerful on paper (VERY similar to today's arguements over the 360 vs Ps3).

Eventually, Julian had to admit that the XBox was in fact more than capable of running their GC games.

Hence when it comes to console comparisons, I would take anything Julian has to say with a pitch of salt. ;)

I said "...claiming the N64 was better because it was more efficient"

I meant GC, not N64. :)

im just , if someones really forced to use motion control. i think it can complicate the game if there are too much TiltAction. 2-3 are ok i think. tilt the dragon thing and it will make summersaults or so ^-^

 » why?

They were going to make this game on the PS3 with or without motion control. They basically said the major downside to not making it on the 360 is that the controls aren't motion sensative. Well if you were gonna make it without motion originally, why not make a lesser highly defined version of the game on 360 with analog movement? I'd still play it, it wouldn't look as great and I'm missing out on motion, but I don't want to pay an additional $600 just to play a really cool game.

just stupid. If you say that for 20 games or more (for sure going to be more), you should pay that money for quality games, not minigames with stupid movements that are going to get you bored in 2 days.

Anyone else not very impressed with those visuals? IMHO it looks subpar.

I think Lair looks awesome. In fact, it's the only game that makes me want to get a PS3. It just looks superb. Unfortunately, Lair doesn't come out till March 07, so I guess it's a Wii and a copy of Zelda along with my Gears of War for me this holiday season. Maybe PS3 will drop in price a little by then? Not likely, but it'd be nice.
