logoBecause of multiple lawsuits filed by Sony, Hong Kong gaming retailer Lik-Sang finally succumbed and bid the industry goodbye. As of today, Lik-Sang is no longer operational, following the ruling of the High Court of London regarding the retailer's sale of PSP consoles. According to the decision, Lik-Sang's act was unlawful as it infringed on Sony's trademarks, copyright, and registered design rights by engaging in gray importation.

The main stand of Sony, through a spokesperson's statement to Gamesindustry.biz recently, was that they ultimately had the customers' best interests at heart. They claim that it would be to the disadvantage of the consumer if they were sold hardware that fails to conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards.

Lik-Sang, however, vehemently disagrees with Sony's claims, citing that the PSP consoles that they ship contain genuine Sony 100V-240V AC Adapters, which carry CE and other safety marks, compatible worldwide. Furthermore, all the handhelds did actually conform with all EU and UK consumer safety regulations. Therefore, the necessity issue for consumer-protection raised by Sony was non-existent at best.

Lik-Sang also points out the irony that while Sony was berating them for supposedly infringing on their rights, they conveniently failed to disclose to the High Court of London that Sony Europe's very own top directors allegedly received their PSP hard or software imports from Lik-Sang, starting just two days after it officially came out in Japan, complete with accompanying free Lik-Sang merchandise, like mugs or badge holders.

SCEE Managing Director, Ray Maguire, UK Marketing Director Alan Duncan, Chris Sorrell, SCEE Creative Director, and Rob Parkin, SCEE Development Director, are just a few of the names who were found to have placed PSP-related Sony Europe orders. Nine months later, Lik-Sang found itself facing a lawsuit from the company of these former customers.

Former Marketing Manager of Lik-Sang.com, Pascal Clarysse, had some words to say about the issue. And you can expect it to be not pretty. Says he:

Today is Sony Europe victory about PSP, tomorrow is Sony Europe’s ongoing pressure about PlayStation 3. With this precedent set, next week could already be the stage for complaints from Sony America about the same thing, or from other console manufacturers about other consoles to other regions, or even from any publisher about any specific software title to any country they don’t see fit. It’s the beginning of the end... of the World as we know it.

So what happens now to those existing placement orders?

Lik-Sang will be cancelling and refunding all existing orders. They are also now working closely with banks and PayPal to work out the refund of any store credits held by the company. Their customer support department is also working double time to cater to any open transactions, like pending RMAs or repairs and shipping related matters. They also would like to reassure their patrons that they will make sure nobody gets in the line of fire unnecessarily regarding this issue.

And like receiving news that a good friend just passed away, there's nothing more left to say.

» all I can say is, wtf

Sony really needs to realize how much they're alienating their customer base when they repeatedly do things like this. Brand loyalty isn't just a given; when you treat your would-be customers like crap and sell overpriced, sub-par products - these are not smart decisions in the business world. This further solidifies my decision to get a Wii this year instead of a PS3. Blu-Ray be damned, full HD gaming be damned, I'll stick with the company that obviously cares about the people playing (read: paying for) their games.

i wish nothing but the downfall of sony from now on. Lik-Sang was the best place to get little videogame nicknacks from japan.

even though it may not work.. i place a curse on sony.. my all their ps3 controllers malfunction and their batterys burn.

i hope they go bankrupt themselves so we can piss on their buisness's grave.

F**K SONY FOREVER!

 » WTF?

Lets hope this brings so many customers together.
So many complaints together.
So many angry voices that Sony finaly changes their politics

A shout must go throug the internet!
Boycot Sony! Write protest letters! Show them its not right to destroy other companys, to betray customers, to rule as a gorilla in a heard of sheep!

Sony your PR realy $uck$ @$$

 » Strange

I find it strange that Lik-Sang shut down because of the lawsuits, UNLESS either of 2 things happened
1 the lawsuit was large enough to force them to declare bankruptcy.
or 2, The Lawsuit prevented them from ever making mony from the online importing business (Aka not allowed to sell Sony merchandise maybe?)

Because otherwise it would be in their best interest to keep fuctioning as a business. Since their Average variable cost should not have decreased from their "unrestricted" merchandise. Even though with the major lawsuit might have substantially raised their Yearly Total cost, as long as they are meeting their Variable cost (Cost of equipment and labor etc) they will be profitable in the long run.
So somehow I have a feeling this might be a slight negative campaign against sony (And they will return with a new name)

OR they feel that without their Sony sales they can no longer turn a profit... (doubtfull)

 » and

as stated this sets a very bad precident. they can expect more suits + rulings just like it. who wants to go bankrupt?

i doubt liksang made the most on sony products. however sony was only the one fighting them, the catagory attacked was new unavailable in that territory import consoles. it seems completely reasonable, to me anyway, that they were liksang's bread and butter.

» Right, and $ony was whining about decreases in sales?

I mean, seriously. Lik-Sang sells Sony stuff, and for that, Sony sues them? I mean, Sony has been making some pretty bad calls lately, but this is like a punch below the belt. I wonder what they come up with next, self-bricking PSP firmwares? -_-

yea, and i bet firmware update 3.0 is going to make the psp grow appendages and destroy any non-sony products in my house while im asleep to bring their profits up. 125 iso's, firmware 1.5, and a blunt is all i need to show my support for sony. and of course, the one umd that i ever bought, gta-lcs, that keeps my devhook runnin. and ps3? ive taken *****s that can read bluray and have wireless controllers, so fvck spending a ***** entire paycheck on a system made by a company that wants me to wait till the ps4 comes out to set a release date for gran turismo mobile on psp, the ONLY GAME I BOUGHT THE SYSTEM FOR!! homebrew and isos are the only thing keeping me form taking apart my psp, dipping the motherboard in acid, and sending all the circuit boards to the four corners of canada.......wii!!!!

» I don't care, play asia will be happy lol

It's not like I import games ( okay I download, detail ) lol

but anyway it's normal for companies to hate this kind of company, they ***** all the system of sales ( if sony want 400 000 psp in US they do not want 300 000 in US and 100 000 shipped around the globe, it's impossible to see the selling sheets... )

And lik-sang was illegal anyway, it's like closing modchip.com ... with the differance that lik-sand tough they were legal...

anyway I don't import because I sadly cannot read japanese ( really wish I could... should learn.... ). So I don't care at all about the news, it's still sad that lik-sang close... but I won't shed a tear lol. Personnaly I think it's pretty normal for big companies to hate'em.

but why all the people on this forum just EXPLODE because of a little news like that? I mean, dah it closed, everybody saw it coming when sony sued them! And it's not like everybody import.. man.. and ps, lik-sang was illegal don't you forget, I mean, when the FBI killed suprnova.org we were NNNOOooooo, but did we said: now I hate the FBI lol, NO because it's NORMAL to arrest criminals ( hoping they don't try with me.. ) and lik-sang was even selling modchips for the ignorant people here... even if it's not because of that they were destroyed, it's still a little news, think about play-asia next time you wanna import that's all, play asia will gain a better market share lol

 » Just for that Sony...

I`m going to show ALL of my friends with PSPs how and where to download ISOs, and I swear I`ll never buy a PSP game ever again. I never used Lik-Sang, but they were a great import site and I was thinking of importing something through them.

So who`s next Sony? Ebay perhaps? Amazon? Sh*t Sony, why not just stop fsuckin around and get it over with by closing down the internet.

Now I feel ashamed to own a PS2 and PSP. After this kind of treatment for their customers I don't think I'll be getting PS3. As everyone in Europe should do. We get their products after everyone else, and pay a lot more for the same thing (you know 1$ is not 1€...).

   by SonySuk (Unregistered) - 2006-10-24
 » crazy world

Wait a min, you close down a company for selling grey imports, the only reason they sold them was there was a demand and the only reason there's a demand is because SONY you suk at marketing, planning, launching in Europe. If it weren't for fanboys you'd be out of a job...absolute travesty that Lik-Sang have been bullied into oblivion...only good point is that when I run my pirate iso's I'm just as bad a person as Sony is a company...

   by GrypHo (Unregistered) - 2006-10-24
 » This sucks!

SONY, i cant believe you are so stupid... Lik-sang helped you selling your *****... low quality, d-pad-broken consoles, cant believe you only want to make a total mess only to earn some money to help you recover all the money you are going to lose this year because of your stupid decisions, cant believe you only want to "steal" to honest companies for you to correct your mistakes, learn how to lose, dont be stupid... I'm sorry but now i cant continue supporting you, i cant continue buying accesories/games/consoles/electronics from you, i planned to buy a PS3, a vaio, some stuff for xmas and lots of games but now... I will buy a Wii or a 360, that's for sure...

 » Sad

It's a sad day. I never bought from Lik-Sang...but it just goes to show how things REALLY work in the world. If you have enough money, you can constantly bring people to court, so that way all their money is used on legal expenses...and it's not like you can refuse to go to court.

Another sony mistake. I don't know what's more troubling, that they shut down someone that sold probably millions of dollars worth of their products...or that they don't realize shutting down Lik-Sang is a horrible PR move.

Once again Sony seems like the bully....good move guys. Someone get them some new PR people, seriously. This has been the worst year Sony has had in the videogames industry.

First UMD's go defunct, then the PS3 is delayed, no rumble in the controller, paying 599 for the complete console, the PSP is only alive through homebrew pretty much....

Well at least we have Blu-ray to look forward to...(lol)

 » Wow...just wow

When I logged into the site, I didn't expect to see this. This is a huge blow for thier customers, even people who haven't used Lik Sang are pissed about this.

I for one am not phased by it at all, I've used Lik Sang many times before and always felt cheated when I saw the same product at Play-Asia for way cheaper, although I still hope they don't shrivel up and die, hopefully they can stablize or return in the future, but shame on BOTH companies anyway!

PS. This is in no way gonna stop me from buying a PS3.
