It's a total cliche to tell you folks that pictures are worth a thousand words, but I might as well repeat it for emphasis' sake. We got some mind-blowing magazine scans of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, straight from Playstation U.S. There's obviously far less graphics overhaul involved, as gamers are hoping for the developers to merely correct the bugs in the earlier versions of the game.

Oblivion is an open-ended sandbox game where players are allowed to explore all the 16 square miles of territory, develop and evolve their own characters, and interact with NPCs, among other things. As the player levels up, most of the enemies, quests, and treasures become just as increasingly more difficult and challenging to beat or obtain. One of the main differences that this fourth installment of the Elder Scrolls series is that Oblivion now marks all locations on the player's map, showing them exactly where to go to continue the quest. This is so players will find their quest objectives in Morrowind far easier.

The game, as we all know it already, is set for a United States release in November, along with the PS3 console. And I won't bother you with more blah-blah. Just take a look at the scans here.

Do you guys think the offical u.s. playstation maginzine will have blu-ray demos when the PS3 comes out?

 » load times?..

I wonder how the load times will be, considering it is loading bigger textures with a slow 2x Blu Ray drive

 » short load times

hopefully they will put in uncompressed files cuz they have more room and so the load times will be way less

so already we have a ps3-basher, but at least we have two people with an honest question.

To post #2 - no-one is bothered what you have to say. That's your twisted opinion, not everyone elses. Either crawl under a rock or keep your biased opinion to yourself.

To post #3 - It all depends on whether or not they make a move from official ps2 magazine to official ps3 magazine. If they do, there is a very high chance, but it also depends on manufacturing costs and how many demo's and how much content they will have each month. I daresay they will up the price to £7 (in the U.K) if this happens.

To post #4 - We will only find out upon launch, the blu-ray drive may only be 2x, but it takes A LOT of data each spin.

 » Load Time

Remember that blue-ray 2x is a LOT more than 2x DVD read speeds.

   by CheekyGamer (Unregistered) - 2006-10-07
 » Ok...

#7 - The 360's DVD is 12x, which is faster than Blu-ray 2x (which is about the speed of DVD 8x).

#4 - Has anything been said about the textures in the PS3 version being bigger? On one of the scans on that website, it says "But what about more sweeping changes to things like animation, TEXTURES, or basic gameplay? Turns out, the team wasn't interested in rebuilding the game from the ground up. "That's the game we want to have out there", Howard says emphatically......"Even if we had the ability to, for instance, redo all the art, I wouldn't want to do that""

#5 - I can't believe the number of gamers who come to that conclusion. Uncompressed textures are BIGGER, compression makes them smaller, so if anything, the load times will be longer for large uncompressed textures, especially when a powerful processor can usually load and then decompress a texture faster than loading the original uncompressed version.

Anyway, I do look forward to seeing more from the PS3 version (after I finished reading the article in those scans that is).

Be realistic. Everything graphical-wise is going to be the same as the 360 version.

just wondering, because if it's the same I don't understand all the fuss, I mean, It's an old game now...

but if they polished a bit... no... a lot, that would be a reallllllly better news.!

Looks way better than PC and X360 version. Thing is, that you can download texture pack for PC version, so it looks even better.

Sharp high res textures all over the place, anisotropic filtering , self-shadowing - X360 version just doesn't compare.

 » #13 - Try reading the article...

... instead of seeing what you want to see. As quoted by CheekyGamer in #9 from the article;

"But what about more sweeping changes to things like animation, TEXTURES, or basic gameplay? Turns out, the team wasn't interested in rebuilding the game from the ground up. "That's the game we want to have out there", Howard says emphatically......"Even if we had the ability to, for instance, redo all the art, I wouldn't want to do that""

The graphics are the same except for a few tweaks here and there thanks to extra developement time, such as better transitions between background and foreground objects. Although I'm hoping for improvements to the game engine to improve the framerate in places where it would usually stutter.

Are you blind?

They didn't redo art, you know what art means, right? It doesn't mean textures.

Anisotropic Filtering is a post process, and it's right there on that scan, you should be able to see it (distant textures are sharp).

As for sharper textures - on X360 distant textures look like they were taken from N64 game, on PS3 textures are high-res all over the draw distance.

Conclusion: you're blind and you can't read, oh, and you probably have no idea about technology that is being used in game.

Also where the ***** did I state that it's not thanks to development time? It looks best on PS3, period.

 » #16 - Are you really that stupid?

Texture are not art? LOL! How dumb can you get? Do you even know what a texture is? Geez. LOL!

Why don't you read that article instead of staring at screens like a loser inorder to see things you know nothing about.

And here's another quote from that article;

"..you might be wondering if the PS3 version of Oblivion sports any technical improvements over the 360 version. The answer: SORT OF. "It has a lot of technical niceties, " Howard says, "just [as a result of] thedevelopement time. One of the things that bothered us was how the distant landscape looked....On the PS3, it's a lot more seamless. We did some new shaders for how it takes information from the background to the foreground and blends all that together. It's a slightly cleaner image"."

A SLIGHTLY cleaner image, Uh huh, so you were saying? The textures are the SAME, the developers have simply used the extra time to make improvements to the game, which includes improvements to the graphics or a technical level, NOT changes to the artwork of the textures themselves.

>"Conclusion: you're blind and you can't read, oh, and you probably have no idea about technology that is being used in game."

Stop looking in the mirror. It's obvious I know far more about technology than you. Also, vave you actually READ that article? Or are the words too big for you?

As for Anisotropic Filtering, it's a technique used to address a blurryness seen in bi-linear and tri-linear filltered textures when rendered at an ANGLE to the screen! The greater the angle, the greater the blur. It doesn't make a texture sharper when it's parallel to the screen, hence would have NO effect on the distant textures. Improvements to the background is a result of new shaders, as I quoted above.

If you want to discuss something online, atleast gain a bit of knowledge first, especially before you stupidly use a name like Knowledge.

 » Correction...typo error

"improvements to the graphics or a technical level"

should be;

"improvements to the graphics ON a technical level"

and "vave" should be "have"

:)

If that's the same a**hole Knowledge who is also registered here as KnowLedge, then you're wasting youe time with that uneducated fool, one of the dumbness fanboys on QJ. If it's not him, then you're still wasting your time on yet another uneductated a**hole who goes by the name of Knowledge.

Guys, I agree about Knowledge, assuming it's the same guy of course (textures not art? Whatever next!!!).

#17 - I've heard about Anisotropic Filtering, but never went into detail. From checking it out on the net, you seem to be right about textures at an angle, hence for a texture at an angle to the screen (such as the ground or a wall in a game), the further away it is from the screnn, the blurier it is with bi/tri-linear filtering, whereas anisotropic filtering is much clearer, as the following shows;

http://www.garry.tv/img/cssource/texture-filtering.jpg

That pic also shows that for the distance textures parallel to the screen, there is no difference between the screens. So again, you appear to be right.

Anyway Knowledge, I really fail to see the massive difference between the pics from the PS3 version and the 360 version of Oblivion that you claim;

This looks just as good as any of those PS3 pics to me;

http://www.elderscrolls.com/images/art/ob_xbox360/obx02B.jpg

And these 360 screens look great to me also;

http://www.elderscrolls.com/art/obliv_xbox360_screens_01.htm

The improvements seen in the PS3 version are subtle, and is not the massive jump that you seem to think it is (or perhaps, _want_ to think it is).

 » #20 Thanks.

It's good to see there are gamers here with some common sense.

But yet again, Knowledge posts rubbish on QJ and then runs, so I agree with #19 100%.
