PS3 controller mechanics lessened for MGS4 - Image 1Here's something every game fan might want to think about when it comes to their favorite game. EGM's latest issue has the scoop on Metal Gear Solid 4's use of SIXAXIS game mechanics to liven up gameplay. Specifically, they've actually taken out certain mechanics, and with good reason.

Here's the all-important quote from EGM:

Over the past few months developer Kojima Productions has actually REMOVED several of the planned SIXAXIS mechanics from the game (like maneuvering Snake's Mk. II robot).

"I think the problem with this feature is it was severely overhyped," says Assistant Producer Ryan Payton. "It was talked up as Sony's answer to the Wii Remote. The trick is to use SIXAXIS sparingly and have fun with it. I don't think anybody wants to play a long game while consistently having to tilt the controller around. Rather, it's fun for the player when they're given a chance to use it in short bursts-- that's how we're approaching Sixaxis in MGS4."

Somehow, this sort of reminds us of Lair, with its seeming overuse of the tilt mechanics to simulate dragon flight. We certainly don't want clunky controls in MGS 4, so we're inclined to agree with Payton and let the removal of certain game mechanics slide. How about you? Do you think it was a sound decision on Kojima Productions' part?

I completely agree with this, i dont like when games force you to use it!

 » well

I belive instead of removing it all together it should be an option in a menu to turn it on, so those who want to try it can and those pi** ants who can't get pass the motion controls can just leave it off.

I agree that it should be used in small bits, as done in heavenly sword and ratchet and clank tools, for example.

 » I really love...

when they have it in some parts of the games is really cool... but in the whole game like many PSN titles is annoying

its a good feature for some games and certain things. Like in resistance when you catch on fire you have to shake the controller to get it off. Same with Mgs4 how you have to shake the controller to return to the octo-camo's original state.
But I dont see where he gets "severely overhyped" from. I think everone who bought a ps3 knew that they were going to use buttons more than Sixaxis, and every game has showed me that so far (besides lair which is getting fixed?).

I like the sixaxis. It just takes some getting used to. I always turn it on in Motorstorm, Warhawk, etc. and own and have beaten Lair. When I first tried using the sixaxis it was extremely frustrating and chaotic. I couldn't shoot anything in Warhawk and I constantly crashed in Motorstorm, but it's improving. Now that Motorstorm had an update where you can change the sensitivity of the sixaxis and the PS3 had a firmware update a while ago that made sixaxis better, I prefer it over the analog sticks. It seems like I'm very very alone in that boat, though. I mean there's no denying that the analog sticks are easier to use, but the sixaxis just feels a lot more immersive. Maybe once the PS3 gets more popular, more people will see it my way.

I think when Sony first decided to go with the motion control, they based it off of watching people play with the controllers. I have a couple of friends that always shake the controllers around when they're really into a game even though we'd be playing a PS2 game, as if moving the controller while slamming on a button is going to make their punches stronger. I think somebody should actually implement that into a fighting game.

 » MGS4

This will probably be the first game to make the PS3 to go "BOOM!!" this year.

Warhawk used it well. That's it.

I was hoping it wouldn't use the sixaxis controlability that much...

 » SIXAXIS not for MGS4.

It will be pretty darn difficult to have to use in MGS4 as it's a precision game and it might just mess your whole game play if you are required to use. It should be an option for the people who wants to try it. Good choice by not making it an obligation.

As if PS3 six axis was going to be exactly like the Wii controls. Only a idiot would say that.
I love the tilt feature, i thought playing it in Heavenly Sword was absolutely awesome. However, most devs can't even implemented right, thus we get games like Lair, which is a good game, the tilt feature was horribly implemented, something i would like to call "Lazy Devs"

So using it in short burst is also a great idea, HS didn't exactly have it going all game, just was we shoot arrows.
So i can't wait to use it, i hope we are able to guide the bullets to the victim, and get great headshots.

» im fine only when using 1 axis at a time

eg. stearing at one point with 1 axis, then levelling a vehicle thats launched in the air with another set axis.

Flying aircraft is fustrating tho - 2 axis are set
