Matter is harmful to minors if it is obscene or, if taken as a whole, it… depicts violence in a manner patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community, so as to appeal predominantly to the morbid interest in violence of minors; is patently contrary to prevailing standards of adults in the county where the offense was committed… and lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value for minors. |

What is this world coming to? Violence is part of nature and there is no denying it. Some people want to live in la la land and pretend that it is bad to show blood and death but in reality, it is no worse than having a good time with friends and family at a BBQ. The meat had to come from some kind of violent act. We send people to war and applaud them for doing a good job killing our enemies. Porn laws are to protect kids from getting hurt and keeping their minds delayed from the acts of sex until they are old enough to handle the consequences but violence is different. Even things with no life can cause violence. Rocks falling from mountains can kill, as well as a tornado or flood. This law as well as others like it just hurts good kids who like to enjoy games and movies that have some thrill and in reality doesn't hurt anyone. These kinds of laws bring people apart and take away freedoms. I would have to vote no on this one.
They could have at least included porn in the games if they're being treated like it.
I have to agree with minors being better restricted from violent video games. While I think violence has its place, I also feel kids shouldn't be subjected to it early. Of course, I also feel parents should take a bigger hand in raising their kids and not using games as a babysitter.
The title "games-as-porn" is a little misleading...as it makes it sound like games will be treated as porn in every way...which isn't true. It simply wants to put the same restrictions on the sale of games deemed violent.
I imagine lots of people will see this and jump all over it, but actually read the legislation. It makes sense. Calling it "like porn" is simply a quicker and easier way to get it legislated.
but i think the only way i can see this passing is if they also classify violence and stuff in movies and TV shows as pornographic as well.
They aren't trying to classify violence as porn. That was an example of how to look at it.
In other articles, isohaven compares violent videogames to alcohol and porn.

Don't worry, I put him in his place.
"what a hypocrite"
As usual, you show the world what kind of uneducated moron you are by showing us you have no clue as to what hypocrite means.
"In other articles, isohaven compares violent videogames to alcohol and porn."
As usual, WTF is your point? I did the SAME EXACT thing here so your link is worthless. Comparing is EXACTLY what we're talking about. Damn, you have to be the biggest numbskull on the face of the planet to not understand what is being said so often.
Seriously, when are you going to get a clue?
Like I already said, they aren't trying to CLASSIFY violence as porn. EXAMPLES are the point.
"Don't worry, I put him in his place."
You did no such thing little boy. The sad part is, people are going to check out your link and know you just lied.
What a POS failure you are.
Well if games are eventually considered porn (Adult games), I hope that they have "GAME" shops, where I can go in the back pull back a curtain, pay a quarter and play the newest GTA game.
So what your saying is that people shouldn't teach children to hunt for survival or pass on a family business of slaughtering animals for food? So I guess little Johnny won't be able go on a family fishing trip anymore.
This is ignorant people not looking at reality. You can't hide the world and doing so just makes the next generation of people weak.
WTF are you talking about? What you just said has NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with violence.
Please explain to us ALL how killing an animal for FOOD is the same as letting a 12 year old play a game were the sole purpose of the game is to yank people out of cars, put a bullet in the back of their head and steal their car! Or how about busting open bottles of alcohol to throw on PEOPLE then set them on fire?
The only thing that is ignorant around here it your twisted views on what is or is not violent. You THINK you found a little nitch and you're trying to use it but you are failing miserably.
Farming FOOD is NOT the same thing as a violent video game.
Going fishing? How ignorant are you? Do you HONESTLY think that all those fishing games are going to be put on the adult only list? Grow up!
I 100% agree that certain materials are only suitable for certain ages. Photos, videos, text, alcohol, tobacco.
A parent can still choose to ALLOW their kid to view an R rated movie. The same would go with video games.
For anyone that thinks their RIGHTS are being taken away then you obviously feel the same way about "photos, videos, text, alcohol, tobacco". The funny thing is I don't hear any of you crying like babies about those?
First off...how many kids at a very young age require survival skills on the magnitude of hunting for survival? A 4 year old in the mountains is screwed either way. And how many kids go into the slaughtering business.
Neither of these activities is classifiable as violence. They could be seen as skills or trades and a properly adjusted child can differentiate between the two with proper guidance.
If you think it's acceptable for a 5 year old to play Grand Theft Auto and hear ******a* this and *f*ck* that...then you're a horrible parent.
And if you actually could read (which apparently you can't since you're in with the hunting and meat slaughtering crowd) you'd realize the bill simply wants to limit children from freely buying things that quite frankly they aren't emotionally or mentally equipped to deal with yet without the proper parental assistance. If parents want to buy games for them, sit with them, teach them the meaning of what's in the games, fine, but in reality (which you're so fond of) this doesn't happen and kids get the wrong idea.
I pity your children. I hope when they grow up and have been exposed to violence and hate on a level that you haven't bothered to confront and come out completely ill-adjusted you'll be pleased they aren't "weak."
That means you never seen an animal killed before? It can be just as violent. The screams and sounds they can make in their final moments are just as bad if it were you or me. So you think when people farm and the animals are killed they go ahead and lay down and die easily? I guess if you be sneaky doing it, it is ok then huh?
"That means you never seen an animal killed before?"
Why on earth would it mean that? Why do you ASSume such things?
"It can be just as violent."
Seriously, what level of education do you have? Do you know what the word violent means? Killing an animal for food is not violent unless you MAKE IT violent. I think you're looking for the word gross or graphic.
"The screams and sounds they can make in their final moments are just as bad if it were you or me."
BS. You have obviously chosen to ignore my examples.
"So you think when people farm and the animals are killed they go ahead and lay down and die easily?"
Are you stupid or something? I understand there are many ways to kill an animal. I understand that in the US we have standards to enforce to make the process as humane as possible. Many people stray from this. That is neither here nor there.
Not to mention you are shooting yourself in the foot here. I was hoping you would keep harping on this. Many schools near farmlands have programs that show students the ins and outs of farm life. That includes hanging up a pig and slicing it's throat.
1. They do not hang HUMANS upside down and slice their throats. They do not torture the pig, they do beat the crap out of the pig, they do not set it on fire.
2. They require PARENTS PERMISSION!!! These are high schools kids that are not yet 18 and even if someone was 18 they STILL require a parents permission based on policy alone. Plus that level of graphic imagery is not for everyone. Something else that is up to the parent.
You see #2 there. Do you understand #2? Do you understand how it's up to the parent to make decisions for their kids before they are 18? It's not possible for every single parent to be up to speed on every single game! We, as a society, require a rating system that parents can trust.
"I guess if you be sneaky doing it, it is ok then huh?"
Lame.
I asked you to explain a couple things. You failed to do that. I'm still waiting.
Also, is there a reason you are not using the reply link? If it's not working with your browser then ok, but if it does work then please respect others and use the reply link incase they don't want to sift through this specific thread.
I think it is alright too for kids to play violent games as long as they get their parents permission and if they are mature enough to understand. What these law makers seem to want to do according to the story is to not allow the parents to make the decision. Parents can't legally give their children porn and this is the same thing these lawmakers are proposing.
The games aren't treated AS PORN. It isn't illegal for parents to give it to their kids. They just want the same restrictions placed on SELLING games as porn.
God you're an idiot.
CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS has absolutely NO CLUE as to what he's talking about.
"I think it is alright too for kids to play violent games as long as they get their parents permission"
You just agreed with making the law!!! Do you realize that? This comment right here is PRO legislation for NOT selling ADULT games to minors. If we didn't have a law stating that ADULT games can not be sold to minor then they WOULD NOT NEED their parents permission.
Do you get it yet? This law would make it so a minor REQUIRES their parents permission. Or at the very least some adults permission.
"What these law makers seem to want to do according to the story is to not allow the parents to make the decision."
You are 100% WRONG! How the hell are they going to GET the game unless the parent buys it for them? THINK THINK THINK!!!
"Parents can't legally give their children porn"
This is gray line area. Depending on the age of the child and depending on the material this "could" be considered child abuse. That's why no minor is allowed to obtain questionable material. So as long as someone isn't making a very young child look at very sick material then no, you are again wrong. This is not illegal.
"and this is the same thing these lawmakers are proposing."
No, you are wrong.
"You are 100% WRONG! How the hell are they going to GET the game unless the parent buys it for them? THINK THINK THINK!!!"
I guess you lack that ability. There are other adults that could buy a game for a minor, and maybe make some money doing it. I guess I was just much smarter than you (and still am) than you were as a child. Then again, my parents never kept me from buying Mortal Kombat with blood, and it never made me violent.
"I guess you lack that ability."
The only thing lacking around here is you ability to "get it".
"There are other adults that could buy a game for a minor, and maybe make some money doing it."
No sh1t you moron. The same goes with alcohol, porn, cigs. There is always a way around regulation but that doesn't mean we give up on regulation. Otherwise you might as well throw ALL regulation laws out the door.
Do you see where I said, "Or at the very least some adults permission."
Do you have ANY CLUE as to what that means? Seriously, when are you going to grow up and get an education? Once again, more proof that this Mr. Nonsense idiot has absolutely no intelligence what-so-ever!
"I guess I was just much smarter than you (and still am) than you were as a child."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
another person who obviously has never played a game beyond pacman. what a hypocrite
so if there's a game, starring Dora the Explorer... and the "bad" guy is say bullying another kid... would that be child porn?
the folks in Mass need to lay off the sauce...
What they are showing you in the description of this law is not everything, hence, they put "..." throughout the description to lawfully keep things from you but making it obvious there is more to it.
Excuse me on how I am replying right now with no "cut and paste" available since I am using my PS3's web browser to comment. I would have to research this more but here on this blog, and on the posted link, when the law is described, they use "..." throughout to omit certain details. To me it just seems like another obvious attempt for panicking politicians to take away rights from free hard working people whose founders fought to give ME the right to choose how I live. Another thing, my kids don't play these games because I feel they are not ready yet but when they are a bit older and if they are still on the right course, I will let them when they are ready. I still remember as a kid having a good time eating popcorn and watching a good scary movie with friends. I would like my kids to have the same freedom and opportunity.
"What they are showing you in the description of this law is not everything, hence, they put "..." throughout the description to lawfully keep things from you but making it obvious there is more to it."
It almost seems like you are assuming I or we (as you addressed it) are not already up to speed on the "actual" issue?
"I still remember as a kid having a good time eating popcorn and watching a good scary movie with friends. I would like my kids to have the same freedom and opportunity."
Well, I'm over 30 these days and when I was under 17 I was NOT allowed to buy a ticket for an R rated movie. I could easily watch it if my parent purchased the ticket for me. When my kids are of age I hope it stays the same way it was for me.
I am also over 30 and know what you mean but there was also VHS and cable tv. Thats what I meant.
Ok, so let's talk about VHS and Cable TV.
VHS - To start, porn can not be sold to a minor and for good reason. Now a line needs to be drawn somewhere. R rated films can also contain nudity and adult content. For that reason an R rated movie "wont" be sold to minors. I'm not sure if it's an actual law, I don't think so. More of a policy issue. It's up to a parent to buy these for their kids. Just incase that numbskull Mr. Nonsense rings in, YES there is a way around EVERYTHING.
Cable TV - That is 100% the responsibility of the parents to regulate.
Most of these arguments against creating these laws are a$$backwards. People scream and cry about how it's the parents responsibility to regulate these materials yet they want to REMOVE ALL abilities to do as such by killing these regulations.
Let's face it! If you remove the restriction of PORN to minors you would NEVER see another kid on the street again. They would all be in bathroom stalls!!!!
Regulation GIVES parents what they need to regulate this THEMSELVES.
