Metal Gear Solid 4: Box cover indicates 4.66 GB HD space requirement - Image 1While Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't launching until June 12, it appears the retailers have already received their shipments of the game. Flickr member David-Heffernan took advantage of this fact to sneak in some pics of Europe's MGS4 box cover, which in turn provides us with some interesting details.

For instance, MGS4 will require 4.66 GB of install space in your PS3's hard drive. While this should speed up the game's load time, admittedly, Konami's asking a lot of your console's real estate. Clean out the demos and other unnecessary items you've got in there, folks.

Another detail that's been confirmed is that MGS4 will run at 720p resolution. This should put to rest all previous speculation you may have read indicating that the game was going to run at 1080p. That said, if the game's already shipped to the stores, then all that's left for us to do is to wait. Visit us again in case we encounter any more related news.

It will not change anything....
MGS4 still looks good, will be a great game and will sell like crazy. nothing against you buddy, but that's no reason to whine about.
Also, installation of several GB's is getting the standard. Even if you have the 40GB PS3, There should be plenty of space left.

» Hey Silver Tiger, do you work for Sony?

Talk about being a fanboy. Just because most PS3 games require multiple gigs of harddrive space doesnt mean that this should be acceptable. You shouldnt have to buy another harddrive just so you can play the games you want to play and it amazes me how many of you guys are willing to bend over and take it from Sony. The 360 has its own disadvantages but at least most 360 owners I know dont defend Microsoft when they feel they are being screwed. Plus, its not like they didnt have enough disk space so why is the game only running at 720P?

LESS QQ'ing
MORE PEWPEW'ing

You probably haven't been keeping up with this game, but it was reported that they actually ran out of space. Unless I'm mistaken, of course.

Really guys is it that hard to just think a bit before posting things like that?

look at the bottom right corner of the photo... What does it say? "DISPLAY COPY ONLY"

No the game is not shipping yet...

 » glad to have 250GB

i do not mind at all for the fact that the game is 720p. infact im very happy tbh. WHY?

Its simple. it just means theyve been pushing it in the visual part of the game (Noticed some physics destructability, and texture details). 1080p would probably not have helped on those visuals either. i think its well worth the sacrafice. just look at Uncharted.

i think lair was 1080p. the framerate wasnt good. GT5 is 1080p, 60fps( they worked hard), dont no any faults other than theres no crash.

   Re: yworob - 2008-05-23
» You are happy its only 720P?

You sure have low expectations. If they can get GT5 to run at 1080P(they worked hard), then why cant they get MGS4 to run at 1080P? They didnt work hard enough? Or is it that they know you guys will still buy the game no matter what and talk s*** about everything that isnt made by Sony. How are you not disappointed that the game isnt 1080P? You are obviously a Sony fanboy.

than isn't even HD like haze, halo and GTA still looks good... this is HD so who care if it's look almost photo realistic?

   Re: na2rul - 2008-05-23
 » @yworob

ur dumb. really really dumb.

theres limitations to hardware incase you didnt know you little boy. GT5 doest have any destructability involved. Crysis demo runs well on the lowest res on my machine. does that mean i should be disappointed because of my laptop hardware limiltions???

i doubted not many ppl would be interested in my belongings but i guess i have to say so just to shut up some fanboys themselves. I HAVE A 720p/1080i 27" screen! make sense now? 1080p personally doesnt mean jack to me.

 » Who cares about 1080p?

So what if MGS4 will not be at 1080p? As long as it is not only interlaced, 720p is fine. As for the uses of the Hard Drive. I do not care for that. We are not dealing with a PC, this is a console. I should be able to just put that game in and not have to install anything. Also, I do not see why you would need to install anything to make the game run faster. The PS3 should be able to run any game just fine with out that. I have a PS3 and X-Box 360, and I have never had to install anything on the Hard Drive on the 360. Mass Effect should have been the one that needed that. And GTA4 is a other game, but it did not need to install anything on the PS3.

   Re: BULL3TPR00F - 2008-05-23
 » umm..

yeah it did. GTAIV had to do an install onto the harddrive for the PS3 version. i believe its around 3.96 GB.

if you have a problem with the game, don't get it! It won't matter to anyone of us who are going to enjoy the game whether or not someone who is not impressed with the game has it or not.

 » wow

I'm actually surprised at how many people care so much about 1080p. 720p is also fine, as long as the games fine. I personally don't even have an HDTV yet (only 15 years old, so don't flame), ut my friend does. I've played PS3 at his house alot, and it made almost no difference whatsoever. I tried to watch Spiderman3 in HD 1080p and guess what? It looks the same as on my 1998 Standard Definition Tv, atleast to me and my brother. As for the install, I'm starting to get annoyed at the whole concept of them. They don't usually seem to make a noticable difference, yet they're still mandatory. I really wish dev's stop using them, even though I have an 80gig.

   Re: timz - 2008-05-30
 » well...

I own both a 60" and 40" tv and I have to say the visual difference between 1080p and 720 is not so apparent on the 40", however it is definitely noticeable on the 60". For this reason I can appreciate why some people (myself included) will be disappointed with the lack of 1080p.

100% agree with the install issues.

 » ....

That shows the human nature. You got enough and you want more.. Maan if 720p is not enough for you then dont buy - Before HD there was something like CRT..anyone? Quit the whining and enjoy the game. JEEEEZZZZ get real!

   by clownface - 2008-05-23
 » WOW

I'm surprised MGS4 is not 1080p, Metal Gear online was running at 1080p 60fps at Comic Con in NYC last month, at least that's what the Konami rep told me. I thought that meant both games would be 1080p 60fps.

 » 320GB

I haz a 320GB HDD...
HD movies take up as much space.
Quit yer crying and suck it up, every PS3 has a 20GB HDD.

   by platon - 2008-05-23
 » So what

I have 80gb, and it's not like we can actually use the space for other things then install games. All my movies, pictures and musics are playing from my PC's virtual server, so I download and play, I don't have to copy/transfer or wathever, and HD cost less for 3.5" size (for PC).

Anyway, I'd wish we could make a small install (1 to 5 gb) or a big install (all the game, 15 to 30 bg, offered to the ones who have a bigger HD, and that's why it would not be the only solution), this way we could stop ALL the loading times! :D

 » Don't like it don't buy it

Nuff said.

PS3 and X360 owner here, both cons and pro's. Installing a game? big deal, you do it once and its over. If the devs want it like that then whatever, but you can still play your game and if space is so much of a bother you can always shell out some cash to get the better good.

Anyways. don't like it don't buy it and stop nagging :O

   by NarooN - 2008-05-23
 » wow.

Does it matter?

Only 720p = Big deal. It's still HD, and there's hardly any difference in 720p and 1080i/p. Get off of HD's ***** already.

The 4gb install = If you have a 40, 60, or 80gb, this shouldn't be a problem at all. And it probably won't even be mandatory. Just because it's a display copy doesn't mean *****. The game has gone GOLD which means it is DONE. So this is final.

 » On 1080p

Who knows..it might actually run at 1080p also. Uncharted:Drakes Fortune's box says 720HDTV only. When i un check 720p and just leave 1080p, it actually runs at 1080p . also . Ratchet and Clank does that too.. only that R&C has a bug where the bottom right of the screen looks a bit messed up. But im pretty sure it'll run at 1080p .

   by Syrah - 2008-05-23
 » Its a good thing

Im a computer technician, not that it matters since what im going to say, most people already know. If a PC ran most its data off the CD rather then HDD, we wouldnt have the games we do today. Same with PS3, its just way more faster to stream data off the HDD then the cd drive. The reason 360 avoids this so much is because not all their models have HDDs (arcade versions) so some devs avoid it (ex: GTA4). Im sure most of you know it, I only wanted to explain it to the people who dont. But again, its not a bad thing.

   by Geosondaman - 2008-05-23
 » Who cares man...

The game requires 720p since running 1080p would be a big strain to the hardware. We have to get real...PS3 isn't as powerful as some of the most powerful computers that are custom built for Crysis. It is powerful but not what we are expecting it to be. Running something as good as MGS4 require the resolution to be done a bit, to 720p and it is STILL an HD resolution. It is running at 1280X720 not some screwed up resolution like some other games, i won't name them...anyways, it is running at native 720p resolution and that's all that matters, if you want 1080p then uncheck the 720p option like the guy above stated. Or you TV can do the upscaling. But if you demand native rendered 1080p, sorry, not for games like MGS4.

   by wintermute - 2008-05-26
 » And the difference is?

So, what is the difference between 720 and 1080 resolution? Cuz I just bought my first HDTV and am amazed at the detail displayed in games like GTAIV, what does 1080 add to the experience?

Oh, and this mandatory install is all well and good, and you can say to buy another harddrive to add on, but I have a Seagate 250GB external HDD to store movies, music etc on and the PS3 doesn't recognise it. Why should I have to go out and buy another harddrive just to install the games I wanna play? It should be an option, that way if you really don't have the space it's not going to affect you and if you do then you may see a marginal improvement, but I got pissed off at this with GT5, I mean, 6GB is installed off the disc (mandatory) whereas the download on PSN is only 1.9GB. Now where the sodding hell did that extra 4GB come from?

Answers on a postcard please.

   by ultimax - 2008-05-28
 » Sigh

Didn't Kojima say it would be 1080p scaled down to 720p unless the TV supported it or something? Meh, I don't care.
