Call of Duty - Image 1

"GotY? Hell no! We want FotY! That'd be *Franchise* of the Year, baby!"

It's true that the Call of Duty franchise has quite a huge following - that's one thing you can't deny. But how strong is it, really? According to Activision executive Simon Wells, it's big enough to compete with the big boys outside of the gaming industry - meaning they can compete with other popular franchises in world of movies, TVs, books, music, etc.

What's more is that they're aiming for Modern Warefare 2 to break records as the best-selling video game of all time!

A bold claim and a tall order, perhaps? Not by a long shot if you're planning one kick-ass marketing campaign to shake the very foundations of the entertainment industry! Here's how Wells explains the situation:

Each year the Call of Duty franchise goes from strength-to-strength. We want to propel this year's title [Modern Warefare 2] to be the biggest selling video game of all time. That may raise some eyebrows, but step back and look at the franchise's trajectory through preceding launches, and this objective starts to look viable

We firmly believe we have the potential to be the No.1 entertainment property of the year. The reality for a franchise as large as Call of Duty is that we are competing directly with entertainment propositions outside of the video game space.

Activision and Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC is to be released on November 10, 2009.

Talk about hyping the game, just hope it doesn't fall short :)

i think all the popularity of modern warfare 1 has gone to their heads, unless they're using this hype tactic by saying this is going to be the holy grail of all games to boost sales.

IW will hype the game up so much for their diehard fans and newcomers, that everyone will be disappointed. They would have been wise to just stay quiet until a few months before the game comes out. That would have kept everyone on the edge of their seats.

I still don't expect much. It's either gonna do some mythical feat to revolutionize the genre or just fall short of everything.

That's Activision hyping it up, not Infinity Ward.

You've also made a major statement: "It's either gonna do some mythical feat to revolutionize the genre or just fall short of everything." That is some extreme, right there. Why can't it just be a good game?

We all know you have serious issues with the Perks, but why so negative?

   Re: NarooN - 2009-04-05
 » lol

I don't have "serious" issues with the game. The game doesn't alter my life by existing. I'm not gonna show up with pitchforks at IW's offices and demand them change something or whatever.

I just don't like the hype or the mass popularity of the game when other games have or already are doing things much better than it. This is, in effect, the next Halo in terms of popularity.

That last comment I made, it basically means it's either gonna go beyond people's expectations or just disappoint everyone. Sure, it might be fun and exciting, but then again it might not be.

At this stage in development, I'm not at liberty to talk crap about the game since I don't even know what the gameplay is like yet.

If the truth be told, I also hate Martyrdom, Last Stand and [not so much] Juggernaut. They render a whole match pointless in my eyes, but there you go!

I'm just hoping to relive COD4. I loved the social side of it - even my non-gaming friends were buying PS3s because of it. There are even "Call of Duty Widows" Groups on Facebook lol!

I'd just be happy with map, weapon, rank and challenge updates, so even if that's all it is, I'm still looking forward to it.

ROLL ON NOVEMBER!

I still play CoD4 private matches. I just like the customization. Reminds me of Counter-Strike, lol.. It's a good game, it's just that it can get annoying in bigger matches when you can't spawn or take one step without getting naded.

I'll end up buying Modern Warfare 2, I already know it. Something will entice me to play it. I might bash 99.9% of games, but at least I actually play them before giving my large rants on them. ;-)

I don't really like CoD. Or FPS games in general (Except UT3, I love that game). So I won't be helping Activision achieve their goal, I guess.

Unless the game has OVER 9000 trophies! :O

Yeah I can't stand FPS games except Timesplitters and the now ancient Duke Nukem 3D.

I think Modern Warfare 2 is a really, really dull name too. At least with Call of Duty before it, it stood out a bit more.

There are so many FPS games it's not even funny anymore...

I have no doubts the game will sell well, and I have no doubts with the game's quality. I'm sure it'll be great!

But "biggest selling video game ever"?

You've got to be kidding me. It'll be nowhere near that.

» Way to get co-cky haha

I would never make a statement like that about a product that'll launch. Sure, it's good, but I definitely think Grand Theft Auto and even Halo have more right to have a statement like that made for them.

 » i don't really think so..

i mean. biggest franchise would be POKEMON. multi-billion dollars franchise. if modern warfare aims that high. i wonder how in the world they can achieve it.

   Re: Musev - 2009-04-06
 » ..

POKEMON, That still going? I didnt think anyone cared about it anymore.

   Re: Master Chef - 2009-04-06
 » lol

Yeah IDK what they mean by that. Pokemon Red/Blue has amassed something like 20 million in sales, and Super Mario Bros 3 and New Super Mario Bros have 18 mil each. MW2 won't touch that, COD4 didn't even come close to half that.

MW2 has a good shot at best selling shooter of all time, but not best selling game period

   Re: papajag - 2009-04-06

Yeah Pokemon still has a lot of fans. I know that they'll have high sales for this game this year though. It's out on 3 platforms which is a definite win for their point.

Now the question that's left is can the game meet expectations or will it just be a complete clone of the first game with a couple of extra frosting on the side?

and Haze was supposed to be the Halo killer and now Free Radical is out of business ...

yeah, and Spiderman is the best game ever since.......... I can't take it. They lie!!!!!!!!

» Super mario is the biggest

In terms of number of games made and spin offs and sales. don't think COD apeals to enough people to make it the biggest. I haven't bought a COD game, still waiting for the first one to come down in price, still like 40 pounds in shops and its 2 years old.
