The Yellow Doggie: yapping in PS3s everywhereWell, let's make this previous article official and beefier, shall we? Yesterday, one of our writers found that Terra Soft's Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 will support the PS3. Well, today Terra Soft sent a press release to say exactly just that, plus announce even more never-before-heard details on how the Yellow Dog will hook up with the mother of all PS consoles.

Terra Soft brings Yellow Dog Linux to the PS3 under an agreement with SCEI (which partly answers yesterday's question: why isn't Sony releasing an announcement about this? Probably because they feel confident to leave it all to Terra Soft?). In developing v5.0, the company integrated and enhanced code from Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Sony Group, and Fedora to offer the following:

  • kernel 2.6.16
  • gcc 3.4.4 and glibc 2.4
  • Cell SDK 1.1
  • OpenOffice.org 2.0.2
  • FireFox 1.5.0 and Thunderbird 1.5.0
  • Nautilus 2.1.4
  • ... and a suite of Personal Accessories, Development Tools; Sound & Video, Internet, and Networking applications.
Installation can be one-click easy for the uninitiated, or options-diverse advanced to select from more than "fifteen hundred packages, as is expected from a complete Linux distribution." We can assume that for the budding programmers out there (you know who you are), the SDK is going to be a must-have.

Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 for the PS3 will be made available through YDL.net Enhanced accounts, through the Terra Soft on-line Store, retailers, and public mirrors worldwide. You'll also know Terra Soft as the company that plans to make a supercomputer out of PS3s. Talk about a working relationship with Sony.

this is good news. My friend was afraid coding for the cell and linux portions of ps3 would have a rocky start. Now they offer dev tooks and sdk's.

you better get ready for a swarm of homebrew, qj.net

 » homebrew, hell yeah!

you can even emulate mac OS X tiger with yellow dog, man the PS3 will rock!!! I'll use it a lot as a computer and a lot for games, 500$ for a computer running at 1 terra flop/s is... cheap? lol, and playing BD/DVD/CD and BD games also?...hum... this is a big bargain! +D

ps: I'm so happy about the terrasoft annonce.

» The PS3 doesn't even have enought RAM for Gnome

So how in gods name do you believe that it has enought RAM for OS X ??

 » Re: Flow3184 and Gnome

Bull! Gnome runs easily on 256mg DDR, let alone 256mg of XDR ram. You can't buy 256mg XDR for a computer at any price and it's the equivalent more than a gig of standard DDR memory. It's streaming memory not even meant for holding for long periods or even massive quanities of memory. That's for the virtual memory on the fast Sata Drive to take care of.

But the Linux system from Yellow has a much better Window manager anyway in Enlightment 17! Enlightment brought animated desktops to computers long before Apple had even thought of it! Only thing left to add would be XGL and AIGLX is already in the XORG server.

Want to see some awesome eye candy? Just wait till you see what this Custom Yellow Dog PS3 Linux can do in Enlightened new ways!

It will knock your socks off! This is a fully optimised "Cell" specific Linux Distro designed to help you run your whole home more efficiently. Capable of also tagging into networks of HPC (high performance computing) Clusters, while your not using it that will lead to cures for cancer and posibly finding intelligent life elswhere in the Universe!

The Linux we are getting powers some of the most powerful Super Computers in the World and is the King of HPCC World! Linux whether you know it or not, is in your home right now and is on things from Cell Phones, Tivo, etc., etc.! So who needs OS-X Tiger when you've become Enlightened by Linux! ;D

 » My new computer

I've been limping along on this POS computer for to long. I had already giving up on playing PC games with it. Soon there will be now use for this anchor of mine. I'll have to invest in a nice bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Maybe even hook a monitor up to the ps3, has any heard more about dual screen on the ps3? Having one HDTV and one computer monitor hooked up to it would be sweet.

 » UK game console tax

I thought I remember reading something awhile back about how sony wanted to classify the PS3 as a computer so they didn't have to pay some "Game Console Tax" in the UK. I found this in the ps2 wiki "circumvent a UK tax by defining the console as a "computer" if it contained certain software."

I have a feeling this might have something to do with that UK tax maybe even having something to do with it being delayed in the UK. probably not the last part.

 » oh yeah

the ps1 was heavily taxed so sony stated ps2 and ps3 are computers. Only this time ps3 *will* be a computer/

 » Not Just a Computer!

A Super Computer! We Gamers will be the first civilians to to have the "Cell" Broadband engine in our homes. We have it even before IBM completes it's Super Computers for the U.S. Government D.O.E. or the Department of Defense's Super Computer or their Future Combat System (FCS) in Future Force Warrior's Backpack!

Here's a link that can help you envision just what lies ahead for gamers, citizens and government alike:

another point for the PS3.

» Re: UK game console tax

Actually that was their plan for PS2 as PS1 was heavily taxed due to Game Consoles taxes during that era.

The UK Law has changed now and these so-called game console taxes don't exist anymore... :)

Oh man, I wish I had $600 to bu a PS3 this year. The pre-orders are already long taken, I'm broke, and they'll be sold out until well into next year.

But man, when I get one I'lll be anjoying those games and homebrew.

Haha, I wonder if you can emulate Windows on it, that way I don't have to wait for emulators on my PS3.

Sooo, with linux, would we be able to play some PC games? Well it run just like a normal computer? I'm stupid, enlighten me ;D. But I find it a really nice feature, it is definitely worth the price tag.
