It's been talked about in the past few days, and drama (or lack thereof) has ensued, so here's a bit more detail regarding the comment. In Part Three of the David Jaffe episode of Gametrailers.com's Bonus Round, when asked what he would change about the PlayStation 3 if he designed it, he notes that he would've left-out Blu-ray in order to lower the price.

He admits though that although that's just his opinion, it might "probably bite him in the ass for years from now" because it might've been a smart decision.

Anyhow, in defense of his opinion, he believes, personally, not as a Sony employee, that taking out Blu-ray and lowering the price would've made the console more competitive and more welcome to gamers purchasing it.

He believes that at the moment - he emphasizes at the moment - that it's hard to convince people to drop their DVD collections in favor of another format. He notes that the inclusion of Blu-ray might prove to be a smart decision from Sony, especially since he hears that Blu-ray is doing well right now. Personally, if he was at the helm at the time, he would prioritize making the console more available to gamers and lowering the price.

Not that the price they have right now is bad. In fact he says that it's great considering that Blu-ray is in it. David Jaffe is definitely swimming upstream with that comment, considering Sony's "unified" message from their many PR people and corporate execs.

David Jaffe: proving that being a Sony employee doesn't mean you have to be a Borg drone.

But, now that the interview is out, enough words. You're all probably sick about this already, especially all the reports that claimed that Gametrailers sensationalized this interview. So hopefully, to put this issue to rest, just click on the "read" link below and watch the interview yourself.

We highly suggest you listen to his comments on what he wants to change in the games industry, and in gamers in general. We suggest you listen to his cry to support original titles like Shadow of the Colossus and ignore all the "C-level licensed crap."

» Then why bring the sh&t up.

You guys have nothing to post and keep repeating the same old shi& week after week. We need game news, we already have the console or plan on getting one. This site is nothing but a bash on the 360 one week then the PS3 the next. I own a PS3 and love it, had a 360, it was okay, just not my cup of tea. So sick of all the fan-dom crap, just give me game news, not some dip$hi&'s opinion!

 » Yeah right...

Could'nt have said it better myself....

This story has been blown out of all proportion. So David Jaffe thinks PS3 did'nt need Blue Ray - so what...? It's just one guys view...

I'm also fed up with the constant PS3 V Xbox 360 drivel, screen capture comparisons, so call ed 'analyst' predictions, and console bashing in general. This is a PS3 site, so lets have some proper PS3 games news please...

 » sigh

people fail to realize that blu-ray is necessary for big, HD games. and that is why MGS 4 isn't possible on the 360...

 » Really?

How do you know how big MGS4 is? What? You don't?! Then STFU!!!

 » anyway here's my thing

i know i'm going to be in a minority here... but if they haven't jam-packed the PS3 with all these features making it a sorta cut above the rest tech-wise and just made it an average mediocre console, nothing special over a 360 (which i have by the way) then i wouldn't have bought it... i'd have stayed with my XBox (which i bought inspite being a Sony fan just so i'd have something to play cause it came out first)...

and if i had to pick just one... if they made the PS3 just like any other console then i would have bought the XBox so i could start playing (i know the launch would have been earlier without the Blu Ray delays but i'm not taking away XBox headstart cause of assumptions)...but with the PS3 as it is now, with the HDMI, Browser, Wifi, Blu Ray, bigger HDD (elite news just broke out), and others.... a lineup of my favorite games... i would have just waited for the PS3 regardless of the price difference.

» They why do people want it so bad on the 360?

Well let me just ask this....

If you say that it would have been a good idea to take out Blu-Ray, then why are people hammering the 360 so hard to include a Hi-def video format?

Even Microsoft realized the demand for a Hi-Def movie format and released the HD-DVD drive. Sure you can argue that it gives people a choice, but then why are people so pissed that the Elite360 doesnt have it built-in?

I personally love the built in Blu-Ray. Its nice to watch Hi-def movies on my TV. And come September, dual-layer Blu-ray discs are coming. Finaly movies are going to use 50gb of space for true 1080p video. Up until now, they have been using a low quality codec to fit the movies into 25gb of space. But now they can finally use AC-1 encoding for true 1080p. I cant wait!

 » umm

50GB Bluray movies have been out for awhile, the first one was Click from last year. And there are already movies that use the new codecs, not sure about this AC-1 that you mentioned, but VC-1 and AVC have already been implemented besides the MPEG2 codec in Bluray movies.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

This guy is a dolt!

"It's hard to convince people to drop their DVD collections in favor of another format"

It's dumb comments like this that make it hard to take this guy seriously.

There is NO REASON AT ALL for anyone to "dump" thier old DVDs just because they buy a HD solution. That's just plain stupid.

I own both the 360 and the PS3 and I hate the fact the 360 doesn't have the HD-DVD built in and the fact that games can not use the HD-DVD format. I believe 100% that the 9GB limit on the 360 is going to hurt it in the LONG RUN.

A 1080 game, rendered or not simply will not fit on the 9GB disc with PCM audio. Not a game of any decent size anyway.

People are simply not taking the time to maximize the PS3 in the fullest because no one is willing to put forth a lot of money to make a PS3 only version of a game.

When the time comes, prepare to be blown away!

I'll keep my 360 for 360 specific games but that's about it.

I'm much happier with my PS3....and Wii.
