American Muslim Group Leader Slams LittleBigPlanet Recall - Image 1Making waves in the video game world is the delay of LittleBigPlanet due to the in-game music that contained words from the Qur'an. But, as is often the case with religion and politics, there's a twist to the story.

M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D., president of the non-profit American Islamic Forum for Democracy recently spoke out against - yes, against - the delay. He had a lot of things to say about the matter, but here are the more salient points:

First and foremost, the American Islamic Forum for Democracy believes that true freedom of expression and religious freedom demands that individuals be allowed to express themselves without fear of retribution or offense.

Our U.S. Constitution and its First Amendment guarantees that freedom of expression. It is our personal belief that our faith of Islam also teaches the respect of that freedom to all.

This can be seen in the example of the Prophet Mohammed where he defended the rights of his enemies to critique him in any way even if it was offensive to his own Islamic sensibilities or respect for Koranic scripture.

Muslims cannot benefit from freedom of expression and religion and then turn around and ask that anytime their sensibilities are offended that the freedom of others be restricted.

The free market allows for expression of disfavor by simply not purchasing a game that may be offensive. But to demand that it be withdrawn is predicated on a society which gives theocrats who wish to control speech far more value than the central principle of freedom of expression upon which the very practice and freedom of religion is based.

» the way i get it is:

that the delay wasn't needed, but then again i think it was a good idea, there's always some iranic people who don't knows about their own supposed believes, so alot of people would freak out anyway!!

so afterall, i think they did the right thing, from saftety's perspective! ;)
!!!!

 » lul

lmao, is this post for real? Iranic? I have been sitting here laughing for a good five minutes at that, maybe it's cause in my mind I was imagining George Bush reciting your post.

So in conclusion, Iranic people, know your own beliefs and tell the Iracki people to stop blowing stuff up gosh darnit!

   Re: martin447 - 2008-10-22
 » hehe well...

what i meant (in an unclear way apparently) is that accoridng to this guy, iranic people don't know what they are "supposed" to believe, of course they know so, but it's just the way he said it :)

ohh, and i hate bush (even though im not US, im UN (europe))

   Re: Charlybob - 2008-10-22
» Wow, that went right over his head didn't it

Dude, it was a Muslim guy that had a problem with the verses being used, not someone from Iran. It's "Islamic" moron.

Still, while it's not going to make a difference that the group's released this statement, it should at least ease up other companies about using things such as religious verses in their games so long as they're not used offensively. Which, while I'm athiest, there's some pretty good verses and stuff in these books, that'd go well in songs to some games.

And you really should have left that last line out. It's bad enough that we have idiots over here that hate the US for their stereotype of sounding like you, we don't need it to start as a 2-way thing. Oh, and UN, that stands for United Nations. You could be almost anywhere on the friggin planet saying that. It's EU genius.

   Re: martin447 - 2008-10-22
 » why so rude?

you have a problem? UN is the actual (shortened) name, EU is non-existant anymore, but people still use it, atleast people form USA...

and im "sorry" i said iranic instead of islamic but afterall their beliefs are the same, are they not?

just as you said "there's too many of you type" bla bla bla, over half of america is rude people like you, some are real *****s (making no example!), so you just shut it!

you could atleast just tell me i'm worng and that you think i shouldn't be saying that, but no way in hell is there any casue for you too be so rude!!

 » Gino, Isaac, someone

could PLEASE remove my 1st post in this thread, it's turning into youtube now... and i really got enough of discussing with people not able to talk on a civilized level, please remove my message and all replys (including this) i would greatly apreciate it :)

ohh, and Gino, as you wished back in the days "put you account to good use now"; im working on it :)

   Re: martin447 - 2008-10-23
» damn, what did i say

when i meant that EU, was non-existant and UN was what to use.

in history lessons, EU, during world war 2, was NOT european-union, it was something else.

and i know i was wrong and admit it, EU is the right "word" to use (along with UN)

i'm not sure, what i was thinking, but once in a while my mind just wander off... must have been the reason why!

anyway EU, europe, indeed it is...
i've never been good at "society"-lessons, 1st of all because it does NOT interest me the least, only "BIG" things :)

 » agreed

its good to see someone so high up speak his mind, and i agree with him. if a game came out that even severly or barely offended me then i just shouldnt buy it, but then again if it were a good game i would just look past that and buy it anyway. i think sony knows that what this guys says is true nbut when he said if it offends you you have the freedom to NOT buy it which is not what sony wants
sony wants the biggest fanbase possable so removing this and delaying the game is still a good call for them in my opinion
then again its easy for me to say seeing as ive had the game for 3 days now :P

» What this guy didn't understand

is that Sony didn't delay it because it may be offensive to some muslims, but for the $$$ they'd lose in lawsuits and from the people who wouldn't buy the game.
Also the guy who reported the problem didn't want a recall of the discs, but a patch ...

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-10-21
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

1. Sony wouldn't lose anything from lawsuits. There is nothing to in which to sue over. Also there would be no noticeable loss of sales. How many actual Muslims that WOULD GET OFFENDED by this would refuse to buy the game? According to this guy, close to NONE! In addition, media exposure such as this would only INCREASE sales.

2. The guy who reported the problem had absolutely no say in how to fix it. So I'm not sure what your point was on that.

I think it's disgusting that Sony chose to act based on a recommendation from a CONSULTANT rather then speak to the Muslim community.

This is one big chunk of FAIL for Sony.

   Re: Dr_Olaf - 2008-10-21
 » I dont agree

People, organisations and even whole countries got threatened by extremist islamic groups (terrorists) for less ("That painting looks like mohammed! We will bomb you to the ground!")
I think its not only about lawsuits, but also about possible threats (its sad, but true - I am NOT being hysteric) But I could also see major lawsuits coming Sonys way, and as we all here in Europe know, American courts tend to make the strangest decisions (Stella Liebeck), so I could imagine Sony and/or MM being sued over "Discriminating of an ethnic or religous group in media" or something like that.

Its sad that we live in such a world, but Sony did the only right thing.

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-10-22
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

"Its sad that we live in such a world, but Sony did the only right thing."

It is sad. Because with that comment you have allowed them to control your actions and your mindset.

   Re: Dr_Olaf - 2008-10-22
 » I still dont agreee

"Because with that comment you have allowed them to control your actions and your mindset. "
Im sorry. I was not aware of the political potential of a Qj.net comment.
What do you expect me to do except accepting the truth? Start another "War on Terror"?

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-10-23
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

?

There was nothing political about it.

They "affect" you. That's all.

The world is bigger than just America

   Re: ultimax - 2008-10-21
 » Maybe

But Islam's the same all over. And if you read the bit about Mohammed defended some guy who was critisizing him, then freedom of speech is as important to muslims as it is to Americans (or people who fit both categories).

Which really just means that muslims who get overly offended probably don't know their own faith well enough.

   Re: Apeaggedon - 2008-10-21
 » true dat bro

i live in America myself but peeps need to learn that the whole world doesnt consist of only america itself... i agree with the dude above,HOWEVER i proabably would of done wut sony did (ina way) JUST,to be on the safe side of things considering how big the game has grown in popularity.. IMO though i personally would of gone with an optionall patch to download if they were so offended.
   by FreePlay - 2008-10-21
 » YYYYYYYYEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS

"Muslims cannot benefit from freedom of expression and religion and then turn around and ask that anytime their sensibilities are offended that the freedom of others be restricted."

Which is exactly what I've been saying all along. We have NO RIGHT to NOT be offended.

 » Well...

Who gives a s**t really? so what, the game has been delayed by a week or so, everyone is acting like it's been cancelled. I have it on pre-order and i couldn't care less that it's been delayed, because i know it will eventually be released, and as for the reason for delay, its a reasonable one. So they could have just released a patch, yeah, and how do people with no internet connection download this patch? It's always better to be safe than sorry, there are people in the world (extremists & head cases) that would be fully prepared to kill a large number of people just because of stupid s**t like this, sad but true. Take the "Celebrity Big Brother" we had in the uk a few years ago for example, some ignorant arsehole so called "celebrities" on it saying things about indians that weren't very nice, the next week there are thousands of indian/asian burning pictures of these "celebrities" wishing death to them and their families. The world is fu***d up, they should just abolish religion....if only...

 » ....

Sony just didn't want to deal with anymore religious organizations complaining about their games. They don't want negative press surrounding LBP, remember when they apologized for the church setting in resistance fall of man? Who needs another headache like that again.

   Re: hairycanary2 - 2008-10-21
 » did

Sony delay Resistance ? Did Sony hype it with so much crap and beta that it was a kick to the liver when they announced the delay days before the release ?

   Re: Datnizzle - 2008-10-22
 » Nope

They didn't delay resistance because the game was out when the church complained. If they would have complained before, who knows what they would have done. Sony wasen't threatened by Muslims, they were informed of a belief they may not have had knowledge about, and decided not to offend anyone.
WHen did not wanting to offend someone become a crime.
by Jon G. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2008-10-21
 » Delay not so bad.

Not sure but I think Sony yanked LittleBigPlanet before anyone really demanded it be pulled. They were afraid of offending people, which in turn would hurt sales. Completely fine from a business perspective.

If I sold toilet paper that mistakenly had the declaration of independence printed on every leaf, you bet I'd want to take it off the shelves till I can fix the problem.

Then again, I know a few people who'd pay top dollar for that...

   Re: Farnesworth - 2008-10-22
 » I imagine

theres those 437 people who would need a few rolls each week.
oh and 100 others who would love the idea. I'm betting about 30 rolls for them and their friends each month.
theres this one guy, who would buy like 50 rolls a day
then theres that one group that would at least buy one each, so thats 9 more per week.
If only we could expand to print bill of rights and the constitution, we would have a fortune.
   by RexNox - 2008-10-22
» If it were my game...

I would have inserted the line: Death to America. Not because I think America should die, but because I would think it's funny. Hell, if Sony's trying to kill every project they have, they might as well go in a blaze of glory (or shame).
