The Xbox 360 version of Resident Evil 5 was still at the top of the heap last month in software sales. The game sold 938,000 units, almost 20% higher than the expected sales numbers. A new entry, Pokemon Platinum for the Nintendo DS, came in second with 805,000 units sold.
Another Xbox 360 game, Halo Wars, got the third spot by moving 639,000 units. The PS3 version of Resident Evil 5 was in fourth place with 534,500 units sold. Wii Fit came in fifth with 541,000 units sold. Wii Fit was the only title in the top five that didn't reach sales expectations.
With the hardware and software sales now announced, Sony and Nintendo have also sent out their own statements about the March 2009 sales report. Both companies echoed the optimism Microsoft exhibited in their own statement. Sony chose to focus on the software that they're bringing out this year. Understandable, considering sales of both the PS3 and PSP dipped since February 2009. SCEA's Patrick Seybold had this to say: The best part of what PlayStation has to offer this year is a relentless string of AAA games. We've lined up mass entertainment appeal from the hard core gamer who can't wait to get their hands on a game like MAG, the industry's first 256-player shooter, to the casual gamer who wants to take their RockBand skills on the road via the PSP. Likewise, Nintendo seemed pleased with how the March numbers turned out, both in hardware and software. Here's a part of their press statement: "Nintendo systems accounted for 58.4 percent of the video game hardware sold in March, more than all other systems combined," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Consumers continue to be attracted to the wide range of software available and the great value of Nintendo systems." Four games published by Nintendo finished in the top 10 best-sellers of March. These include Pokémon Platinum Version at No. 2, Wii Fit at No. 3 with more than 541,000 sold, Wii Play at No. 8 with more than 281,000 sold and Mario Kart Wii at No. 9 with more than 278,000 sold.
