NPD numbers for PS3 and GameCube sales - Image 1GamePro grabbed NPD's records of hardware sales, and stumbled on something interesting along the way. When the Sony PlayStation 3's sales numbers during the first 10 months after release is compared to Nintendo's last generation console, the GameCube, Sony's home entertainment powerhouse is obviously lagging behind.

The GameCube, which most consider as a distant third-placer behind the PS2 and Microsoft's Xbox, sold 2,120,000 two months before it celebrated its first birthday. The PS3, on the other hand, sold only 1,742,000 during the same period. At this rate, if NPD's numbers are accurate, Sony's entry in this generation's console race might fare worse than the GameCube.

Kaz Hirai blamed production issues (not Sony PS3 pricing), which is apparently the reason why Sony took a step to cut DRAM chip development costs. Our two cents here is that gamers are waiting for premiere titles to hit the Sony PS3, and time will tell if we're right on the money.

 » I agree.

As you've said, Its hard to justify that $1000 AUD with no Solid exclusive titles.

Get some high quality exclusives and drop the price.

Loosing to the cube?, Amusing. :P

Common peolpe do you actually believe that the gamecube was even close to the PS3 in terms of off the box features and future content??? Not in a million years.

Some of you might say but the gamecube was made 7 years ago and so on and so forth...

I am talking about what these two systems had and have to offer in comparison with their rivals. These sale numbers indicated absolutly nothing. Why? Because when the ps3 drops to 360 prices by then it will have a huge number and better games than any system out there. Not to mention that the differences between the games will be obvious due to the age of the 360 (some are even suggesting that the 360 is already maxed out) and the better understanding of the PS3!

For those who chose to live the now and ignore tomorrow, they should expect black days to come!

 » wow...

This what we call BAD PRESS for nothing. only to spit on the PS3. Because it WAS #1. And those peoples have share in Microsoft corp. and they need money. So lets find any bad compare to do .

Why they didn't say that the X360 sell less then the PSP in there first year?
I didn't remember that Nintendo was so diss when Sony crush them.

I just hope that Sony will be back on the #1 spot just to see what they will have to say.

 » one question

how did the XBox 360 do in it's first 10 month?

and i mean worldwide not just North America numbers (cause that chart above obviously is just for North America)...

i'm sorry NPD but i'm from Australia and i've got three PS3s, 17 Blu Ray Games, and 57 Blu Ray movies... and i do believe that people like me deserve to get counted if you are going to make claims such as this and why not mention anything about the 1st 10 months of the 360, a console which went into the generation without competition for an entire year.

 » Wow

Quixand my friend..... you must be loaded!!!!!

lol Am joking, anyway this kind of press is useles unless somebody pays you to cause negative press to your rival (Halo 3 special edition Xbox 360s given away as what...?? pre-christmas presents?????). And lets face it why did NPD chose to puplish this kind of data? What purpuse whould it serve other than the obvious!?

Common lets get serious even if something like this came out for the Xbox side I would ignore it!!

 » What's for ?

The market and the price of the Gamecube and the Playstation 3 are different! It's like comparing a Volkswagen and a Maserati... More sales on Volkswagen as it is cheaper, therefore afforable to a broader audience!

Ouch! less than the Gamcube? I agree with the guy above me though. Apples and Oranges. Oh well. Im happy with my PS3. Its got some good games, and if they will ever release em then it will have a lot more. any console that supports linux out of the box(no matter how crippled) has got my vote. Heh, besides, as long as im happy then f^ck what everyone else thinks right?

So why is the Gamecube 2 (the Wii) selling so much better than the original?

The price is $50 higher than the Gamecube's was.
The games have little quality difference (unless compared to the current competition, which the Wii is way behind.)
The Wii still doesn't do anything but play games.
Is the controller really that special?

Don't worry, people will eventually realize what a turd the Wii is and you're going to see a sales dive just like on the graph once Nintendo decides to make enough of them and quit lying about production problems. The PS3 will take over the Wii's sales, and the 360 will still be kicking ass.

I'm sorry, unless it turns out that Blu-Ray discs transform and kill people's mothers, there's no way the PS3 will be down forever.

The main complaint at the moment seems to be lack of games. This holiday season seems to be a good one for Sony (game release wise), and they have a lot of top notch titles coming next year as well.

I just can't see something as powerful as the PS3 lagging behind as the months go by.
