Do I want to make people pay £ 200 extra for a machine with discs that have storage space I don’t need? My answer’s no, I don’t need to do that today. And I don’t think I’m going to need to do that for quite a while. |

This is clear that this guy is getting uncomfortable... PS3 will smash the 360 !!! Look at the UK sales, just impressive !!! Now wait for this market to get BR movies, that will finish the HD DVD !!!
Time to sell my 360 and cherish my PS3 !!!
Microsoft kinda cheated Sony in a way by not going next gen on their media format for the XBOX 360. When developers make the same game for the 360 and the PS3, they will probably have to leave out a lot of features that a high capacity disc could have made the benefit of. Think if the game is a long detailed role playing game. I am not talking about current types of role playing games, I mean next gen detailed games that would make use of huge amounts of data. With a high capacity disc like Blu-ray and HD-DVD they could make the games huge without multiple discs thus leaving the experience more seamless. Now that Microsoft chose the DVD format, most multi platform games will have to either fit on a single disc or be multipul disc (for DVD) thus altering the gaming experience. Just like games such as Final Fantasy on PS1 where you have multiple discs, a lot of the same data that was on one disc, was also on the other discs just to get you to use everything. The problem is that the data that was on the first disc is not all on the other discs and when you would have to go back say to a previous area, you would have to switch discs. I am not saying that Final Fantasy games were like that completely because they were meant to be fairly linear. I think that Sony is attempting to offer a better virtual world experience but developers stay on the other side of the fence to play it safe for now and make games that they can make more profit of instead of caring about the die hard fans.
"Microsoft kinda cheated Sony in a way"
How's that? By making a better designed product that is better supported, sells, and makes money?
Sony cheated many more people than that. Let's go down the list:
Blu ray manufacturers: $ony controls the format and licenses out the technology. This lets them make sure they can make the lowest priced players, preventing other companies' players from selling well.
Consumers: Group screwed over the worst (most don't even realize it.) Consumers now have to choose between 2 competing movie formats when Toshiba welcomed sony to support HD-DVD, which was first. Sony's greed and arrogance led to the development of blu gay. No longer can you buy a cheap, well supported game console with large game library from $ony. Now you must dontate $200 more to support blu ray and $ony's profits.
Nintendo: Sony had a brief partnership with Nintendo in the early 90s to develop a SNES CD drive system to compete with Sega CD. Sony used that technology co-developed with Nintendo to make the Playstation and compete with them!
Lik Sang: completely sued out of business for selling $ony's own Japanese PSPs! Then lied about NOT being responsible and that Lik Sang didn't show up in court, when they paid millions on a defense!
Toshiba: $ony has used every barely legal trick in the bag to inflate sales numbers, trick gamers into buying players, trick gamers into thinking it's necessary with a game console, and starting an organization to spread pro blu ray lies. The forums on blu ray.com is a joke. All the comments with truthful arguments against blu gay are filtered out!
How many times must I say this, BLU RAY DOES NOT MAKE GAMES BETTER IN ANY WAY.
The best reason sony could come up with to use that extra space is to put different versions from other regions on a disc. Yes! Now I can play games in a language I don't understand! What a great advantage!
RPGs like final fantasy never required changing a disc more often than every 10 hours of playing! Totally irrelevant argument.
I HATE COMPANIES THAT TREAT CONSUMERS LIKE THEY'RE MORONS. True, many are, and the forums here sure have lots of them, but I hope people develop some common sense and support companies that use ethical business practices.
If you want to say anything about MS being unethical, how about some examples this time?
There isn't any demand for BD right now?! LOL. Sony just created the demans... remember, PS3 uses BD for its games; which also allows for higher capacity than DVDs.
With games taking up huge amount of space (more games coming out on multiple DVDs), Sony made the right decision. With games, come movies, they are hand in hand. :)
How bout all the Windows court fiasco? 360 is not designed better. It is a rushed product that has many flaws. Sony talked about Blu-ray years ago when they talked about the idea to make the use of blue from the light spectrum since it has a narrow bandwidth they could have higher capacity discs. Yeah I know Nintendo had a relationship with Sony. They did not like the route Nintendo wanted to go with the machine so they decided to make their own. One of the best things about Blu-ray is that you have higher capacity discs. There is no denying that. It will be needed sometime. Just look at games from cartridge to cd. Then from cd to dvd. Some games used to be 8megs more or less. Then games went to hundreds of megs. Now they are in the thousands of megs. Next they may need hundreds of thousands of megs.
this interview happened before ps3 launched in the uk.
"Nintendo: Sony had a brief partnership with Nintendo in the early 90s to develop a SNES CD drive system to compete with Sega CD. Sony used that technology co-developed with Nintendo to make the Playstation and compete with them!"
I'm not sure but Nintendo withdrew on this project. So its actually not sony's fault.
Nintendo shouldn't have withdrawn >_>
I have both PS3 and 360. I would never call 360 a more 'nimble' system. Clunky, sure. Obnoxiously loud fan and overstrained hardware, yes. Nimble, no. Nimble implies lightening-fast power and versatility. This is the very heart of what PS3 actually is.
On the other lame-o point raised in the posts above, Edge magazine has just released in the last few months a collection of reprints from 1993. They have a clear description of the Sony-Nintendo deal. It was Nintendo that stiffed Sony, which led to Sony coming back with a vengeance with Playstation.
Also, if my memory serves (and back issues of mags like Sound + Vision and The Perfect Image I believe can prove this), BluRay was the first HD disc concept, long before Sony purchased the design and chose it to spearhead its HD-plans. This first surfaced around 1992. The RESPONSE to BluRay was a hack of the DVD format allowing additional layers and much smaller room for data. This eventually became HD-DVD. I remember thinking back then, "I hope that BluRay wins, because its clearly the better format". Having experienced the superiority of Laserdisc, but seeing it overshadowed at the time by VHS, --I wasn't holding my breath.
Lastly, it is ridiculous to say that Sony was the one who was the spoiler in the HD-summit. Toshiba has a grand total of ONE major movie studio, Universal, supporting it. ONE. The definition of 'spoiler'.
I agree that Sony's move to sue Lik Sang out of business for selling cross-territory was extreme and not their best moment. But the other issues raised above by Mister Common Sense are pure hogwash.
You say look at the UK sales but we all know that the PS3 was delayed for so long so it had more to sell at launch and stock was not sold out whereas the 360 was.
Now look at all the other countrys the PS3 were launched also and then read FLOP UNSOLD STOCKS. I believe something like 5% of supplied stock sold in countrys like France.
Blu RAY and HD_DVD are flops in the high street stores no one buys them and Blu ray sells the least Dedicated HD players.
And what is the householders choice of format OH yes its called DVD9(isnt that also built into the 360?).
not only does blu-ray hold more data on one disc, but 4x blu-ray is faster read and write than dvd. now when 12x blu-ray comes out... the speed!!
And blu-ray is better protected
A MS employee bashing something Sony? OMG I never would of guessed! Also, the Cell processor steps up the price as much as blu-ray. Lastly, considering PS3 games are using upwards of 20gb worth of disc space at and around launch, it's impossible to immagine games 2 years from now and not having blu-ray to provide space.
Did he say something that can be considered bashing?
He's totally right. Only 1 percent of movie players sold are HD-DVD or blu ray. MS doesn't want to really get involved in a HD movie format war and that's why there's the optional add on. XBOX 360 is flexible, the PS3 is not.
No current gen games need more than 9 GB of space. Just because PS3 games have the space, they duplicate the data to make up for the slower blu ray speed, and use uncompressed HD audio and video movies in games instead of rendering it real time like the XBOX 360. Blu ray games also undoubtedly have "filler" like many PS1 games did. Funny how a tetris PS1 game can use over 300 mb of data....
Sony admitted they didn't like how DVD players and movies got cheap too fast. That's why they want you to "upgrade" to blu ray now. $ony wants you to spend $600+ on a blu ray player and $30+ for movies again. That's the reason for blu ray's existance.
"The Xbox 360 has been developed to deliver HD gaming - not to drive really complicated engines to get Blu-ray players into the market."
Do people want to buy into a marketing gimmick to push another unwanted sony media format? Yes nearly everyone who likes movies do not give a s*it about blu ray or HD-DVD yet.
$5 upscaled DVDs are better than a $30 movie that looks slightly better any day to me.
Wow you are really sad....All YOU do is come to QJ to talk $h!t about Sony products.
Just to correct your little statement about how blu-ray is slower... not entirely true. The minimum speed of a 12x DVD drive is.... 5x. This means a data transfer rate of 6.875 MBps at minimum to a maximum speed of 16.5 MBps. Blu-Ray Transfer speed is constant at 8 MBps. Now this may not seem that much faster to you, but a lot of people have been talking about how 12x DVD reader reads slower than a 2x Blu-Ray for more than half the disc!!!
"minimum speed of a 12x DVD drive is.... 5x"
Hmmm, I believe it's 6x min for the 12x DVD drive in the 360 (it's 12x dual-layered, probably 16x single-layered), hence the minimum speed is 8.2MBps, and I believe the speed of 2x Blu-ray is 9MBps. So the 12x DVD drive is only slower for about the first 700-800MB of data on the inner tracks, after that, it overtakes Blu-ray in terms of speed.
Hence on average, the 12x DVD drive in the 360 is 1.5 times the speed of Blu-ray 2x. Also, devs usually put the data they want to be read fastest on the outer regions of the disks, and where speed is not an issue, that data is put on the inner regions (this is a common techique to improve DVD performance).
It is a 2.5 times difference, not 2x HM. Hence the inner tracks read at 12/2.5 which is 5x.
But you're correct in principle on the amount of data read before the 12x DVD takes over for speed.
I won't go into all the maths here, but it works out to be about 1.3GB before the 360 overtakes Blu-ray for speed.
Hence like you said, devs can (and do) put data they would like to be read the fastest onto the outer tracks, giving 360 games transfer speed gains of up to 1.8 times Blu-ray's performance in the PS3.
"giving 360 games transfer speed gains of up to 1.8 times"
That's just for the outer tracks, not on average. The average is about 1.3 times for reading a full DVD, but if the data is arranged as suggested, it can be much higher for gaming purposes.
Sounds like a typical comment of the competition. Of course he would dispel the needs of Blu-ray. Whatever, his comments are of no matter. We know how sweet Bluray video performs, and when there are games take up 3 dvds for a quality game to PS3's 1 disc that covers the game and extras, his comments will still be the same and still hold no worth. I bet he would have you believe we are winning the war in Iraq and global warming is just a natural earth cycle as well. Thompson you are a fountain of misinformation. You're Fired.
global warming is a natural earth cycle, how would you explain ice ages ? ;)
its just that we exalerated it a bit in the past couple of years. But this was going to happen anyway. We 'recently' had an iceage, wich is always followed by a period of warmth. Wich we are entering now. just a tad bit faster.
The suns activity is changing all the time. Sometimes there are periods when the flares emitting from it is more toward us than other times. This along with the time of year and the weather current as well as the activity that we do to the atmosphere all play a part. We are lucky to get away with what we have for as long as we have. One of these days, Earth will turn into and environment sorta like Hell. I just hope we all die piecefully before that time.
Heres a fact 99.9% of householders dont give a ***** about HD players.
blah blab blah. Sore losers. M$ just cant shut up can they. They know their gonna loose but instead of doing it with a little dignity, they go and bash and talk trash about the competition. I guess its human nature but very immature nonetheless. Future proof is the word you need to learn you d1ckwad. When Blu-Ray wins, which we all know it will. I wont have to go and buy an add on because its already integrated.
Microsoft is not a big HD-DVD backer! They will support the winning format either way.
Was there any trash talking there? That's sony's strategy.
How the hell can MS lose? Last time I checked they had about 10 million MORE sales than the PS3. When the launch rush in Europe ends the PS3 sales will be back to the usual pathetic levels like in the US. Did you see the sales numbers in North America? 100,000 more XBOX 360s sold than PS3 per week! The fact you think that's losing shows how dillusional you are.
You sound scared to me.....
They have more sales because of a 1 year lead but if you really want to look at numbers the 360 has slowed to a crawl in weekly sales and the PS3 is doing better than the 360 when it came out so that is an indication of where things will be very soon.
What makes you so sure that Sony's sales are going to slow down in Europe when as it stands they are braking records. If anything sales are about to take a major leap now that Killzone has been given a release date, not to mention that Heavenly Sword and Lair are around the corner. Oh and take a look at sales in Japan so you can see what pathetic sales really look like.
No the XBOX 360 continues to outsell the PS3 by a wide margin. The only exceptions are Japan and the recent European and Austrailan launch rushes. When that is over in about 3 weeks, the 360 will most likely take over again. Japan is the only region the PS3 will not finish last.
The 360's one year lead is sony's fault for including blu ray, and a major reason why it isn't selling so hot now.
The 360 had a worldwide launch and supplies were severely limited for 5 months! Just because sony has plenty of unsold PS3s stockpiled doesn't mean there's more demand for it. Of course that won't stop sony from making a huge deal about it.
Mr. Common Sense says...
"Microsoft is not a big HD-DVD backer!"
Sorry, but this is completely incorrect. MS IS a big HD DVD, and one the HD DVD group mentions over and over again. I went to an HD DVD media event last year where they introduced their big HD DVD truck, and there was a rep from MS there talking up HD DVD as a format, and how the company was going to support it. You may want to take a look at http://www.thelookandsoundofperfect.com/ (the HD DVD website) and see how many times MS is mentioned there. The fact that MS is now distancing itself from the format should tell you something...
Gord
Microsoft is probably about the biggest backer of HD-DVD there is.
guess he hasnt seen this article
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid+07/03/27/161243
"They know their gonna loose..."
HAHAHAHAHAHA xD x)
Yea they will x). So would you like to hear this message of an Sony dev:
"A number of Taiwanese game developers/operators have indicated that the PS3 will be unable to surpass the Xbox 360 in terms of global sales until 2008".
And this message was even from a Sony dev, so I bet it would even take until mid 2008 or end of 2008.
I can see you crying at home because you bought a Ps3 :D
Have a nice day Sony retards :D
Have you realised that the 360 is BONED by the end of the year according to this 'Taiwanese' thing.
So technically the 360 will lose to the PS3 in the console wars...........
How the hell is that a Msoft victory?
Nice, pointless post Muscrat. Play your PS3 and STFU. Oh wait... No games... Well buy a blu ray movie and play it then....
If MS isn't in the HD race, then why announce the HD generation with release of the 360? If MS isn't in the HD race, then why sell the HD DVD addon? If Sony isn't doing anything special, then why did he say that the 360 could adapt to anything the ps3 is doing? ALL this adds up to what most people with real common sense have known all along, the PS3 is a better buy and is starting to prove its worth and is a more future proof system than the 360.
Over the next 10 years, who do you think will have to adapt?
Msoft ARE backing HD DVD, with Toshiba - these two companies have a strong partnership.
Sony however seems to be trouncing HD DVD after a initially rocky start.
Methinks the PS3 really has decided the 'war', as the blu ray player is part of the 'package'. More or less it is forced upon you, when you buy the console - I mean once you get it, you probably will never buy HD DVDs.
With the 360 addon - Why would you spend extra on an attachment for an undecided format, simply for movies? Thus it isnt forced on you...
MS only offered the HD-DVD add on to appease dumbasses who always say "you can't watch HD movies on it." Only 150,000 people were interested enough to buy it to play HD movies yet. So MS made a smart decision.
If HD-DVD wins, what will the PS3 be good for? Playing 30 crappy ports of better games on other consoles and the PC? Any more decent exclusive games coming up? Let's see how many more become multiplatform....
News Flash! PS3 sales are horrible. Don't bring up the launch in new terrirtory because it's irrelevant in the long run. 3 weeks from now the sales will nosedive like in other regions. 100,000 fewer sales in North America per week! At least in North America most people have common sense.
Sony isn't doing ANYTHING special. Why do people still believe the hype? They can't even make more than one decent exclusive game.
Home+ easy excuse to get people to pay for "free" online with microtransactions and advertising everywhere.
Folding @ Home- not sony's idea
Blu ray wow only $30 for a movie out of a selection of 50. Helps sony make more money off movie players again, and the reason behind it's existence.
Linux+ limited resources and functionality. Can't even get a game boy emulator to run on it.
Internet+ browser only slightly better than the PSP's sh*tty browser when most people have a computer that does it much better.
You have no clue what common sense is. It is the opposite of buying everything sony tells you to, and choosing your purchases based on what it offers compared to the competition.
Over the next 10 years sony will have to adapt their strategy and not force consumers to buy into whatever new product or format they're trying to profit from. If only more consumers were SMARTER and not encourage them to do that s*it in the future.
You do sound retarded sir. You must be a child or something do to your lack of intelligence. Maybe mommy will buy you a PS3 when your good. In the meantime have fun with you last gen xy'lonite 180.
And as usual Mr. No Common Sense still does not answer the question that has been asked many times.
Are you a MS paid employee?
Since you REALLY spend WAY too much time here denouncing ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that is Sony. I alone have asked that question at least 4 times already with not a single answer....make you think what his "true" motives are huh.
dude......common sense hasnt even answered my question on how Sony, Samsung, Disney, Fox, and all bluray supporters are evil while HD-DVD supports are not.
"Notice how all the evil companies support Bluray" - Mister Common Sense.
So if....I mean WHEN MS supports a bluray drive, bluray supporters will turn good and the bluray manufacturer will be the evil one....right?
Mr. Common Sense says...
"choosing your purchases based on what it offers compared to the competition"
So, if you have a home video format that has ONE exclusive studio supporting it, and another format that has FIVE exclusive studios supporting it...what does common sense tell you there as to which format will win?
If you're trying to talk about "common sense" then you have to look at all the points you're trying to make and ensure they don't conflict with each other.
I don't own a 360, and probably never will. The fact that it exists doesn't bother me at all. I own a PS3, and I'm entertained every time I turn it on - that's enough for me. If Mr. Common Sense feels threatened by the PS3 then I'd suggest he goes to see a shrink to help him work out his problems; they won't be solved by us on a forum like this.
Gord
Who is this Mr. Common Sense character?
I find his posts too truthful to ignore, yet it makes me so mad every time he shows up. It didn't always be this way. I could make up some crap about how PS3 will win and blu ray was awsome and necessary, and coupled with sony's lies, everyone would belive it.
Now this as*hole comes along and ruins it. Go away or I'll cry to sony and my mommy!
PS3 is the best value of any protien folding calculator out there.
Of course HE'S going to put down blue-ray. Microsoft is FOR HD-DVD. Of course he's going to put down others to help his company, that's kind of his job. I have high hopes for the PS3, but that doesn't mean I'm a fanboy (until someone really starts bashing other consoles around).
Honestly Msoft are a bit weaksauce when it comes to these crucial hardware / software decisions.
When Sony announced 1080p, Msoft announced it would be unecaccary to 2010 (or 11), and then quickly followed up with a 1080i update, months later.
Then came the proposed HD DVD player, after Sony announved the Blu Ray Drive.
Oh and 20gb was supposed to be 'more than enough' space.... Er yea... 120gb black Xbox anyone?
No in these aspects Msoft seem to be 'tagging along'.
Oh and the 360 being 'nimble' and 'adaptable' is marketing BS. All that means is the 360 can get PREPHRIALS ala. HD DVD drive, bigger 360 hard drives, USB wireless adapter ect.
All this is at a HEFTY PRICE though.............
High def movies arent a big market - but with large LCDs and Plasmas prices rapidly dropping, more people are going to have high res TV's over the next 2 years, and by then the market for HD movies will have dramatically expanded.
Man, consoles just WANT to be PC's dont they...........
