Ó

That didn't take too long to confirm. A mere day after word got out of the possibility that Netflix will indeed be coming to either the PS3 or the Wii (or both), we now have official confirmation from Sony that the movie streaming service will definitely be on their console.

Netflix on PS3 - Image 1

So says the press release sent out:

PS3 system owners will soon enjoy an unparalleled experience watching their favorite movies and TV shows streamed instantly from Netflix, downloading from the PlayStation Network or watching Blu-ray/DVD media. The Netflix offering expands on the entertainment experience delivered to PS3 system owners via PlayStation Network.

Monthly subscription to Netflix on your PS3 will cost you US$ 8.99. At this rate, you can then watch movies and TV episodes all you want. If you're a Netflix member, though, you'll be glad to know that you will be able to stream movies for free initially after the launch of the service. All you have to do is put in the free instant streaming disc (that is currently being made available to Netflix members), and choose from among the movies and TV episodes conveniently organized for you.

No word on for how long you can enjoy this free streaming privilege, but what is certain is that Netflix members can now reserve the free instant streaming disc by heading to this site right here.

 » Wow

Great news!... Except now I have to shell out an extra $9.00 a month for netflix >_

I believe you took the section of the press release where it said "initially" in the wrong context.

Press Release Quote:
"Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray’s BD-Live™ technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet."

The way this reads it's meaning that starting off PS3 users will have to use the blu-ray disk to access netflix, meaning later they will have a better more accessible solution to access netflix on the PS3, not charge for the service.

Well, I guess I was wrong earlier, but I will admit that I am glad that this will be another option for viewing movies for me. Easier then setting up my computer for viewing on the big screen.

» From this quote from the source

"For only $8.99 a month, Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers via Netflix ready devices such as the PS3 system and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes."

I get that the 8.99 is for a netflix plan and not an additonal charge. Looks like to me any 9 dollar plan will come with this for free and I think it is probably the plan with 1 dvd at a time unlimited.

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-10-26
 » Also combine this with

what demonfreak says because that's also in the blog which if you read it means it will be free to Netflix customers which you have to be in order to use it. There is no add on for 8.99 for non-netflix subscribers as the 8.99 plan as shown on netflix website is a 1 dvd at a time unlimited dvd plan which further proves my argument that it is free. This is way better than what Microsoft offers which is if you look at it is free if you play online since you already need live but if you don't and just want it for netflix it would cost you 40 dollars a year if you know where to buy it and sometimes 30 dollars on a nice sale or 50 if your dumb and just pay MS directly.

since as Gizmodo got it right http://gizmodo.com/5389719/netflix-streaming-on-ps3-coming-soon

 » phiyuku, your right

$8.99 is the plan with on dvd through the mail at a time a long with unlimited streaming. I have the 3 disc at a time deal with the blu-ray option and of course unlimited streaming for about $25 monthly. It is well worth it. A better deal than cable movie channels in my opinion. It is also way better than shelling out the same amount of money for only 3 or 4 Playstation Video Store movie rentals too.

lol this is good news but, WHAT ABOUT EUROPE??!!! (or just the u.k where i live lol)

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-10-26
 » Licensing is a *****

I don't even think the 360 has netflix for the Europe. But you guys have all the other stuff. That BBC app some kind of music thing which I think might or might not have come out. That free Video thing whatever its called I heard was great. Play TV as well. So.... wouldn't be complaining much about this I would be happy with what you guys have.

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-10-26
» Well I looked into it

and its called Vidzone which I thought had some movies or so but I kind of merged the two and its music videos. So I guess if your not a fan of music videos then yeah complain away lol still wish we had it but as you can see licensing is a ***** you got vidzone but we don't and we got netflix but you dont

   Re: phiyuku - 2009-10-26
 » Also

would people in europe really shell out 9 dollars a month to watch a limited number of movies instantly when we in America pay 9 dollars a month to get any DVD from Netflix's expansive library and watch a limited amount streaming because it is not an add on fee as QJ puts it out to be but an addition to what you get with the 9 dollars + plans

   Re: Bountyhunter53 - 2009-10-26
 » Hmm...

PlayTV is nice but i have Sky+ and its made for that purpose. And i also get more channels that PlayTV. It also has a bigger hard drive than my PS3 so i can save more shows.

But on PS3 games and everything else share same space. Not much space left as I download demo's and watch movies.

Btw... Europe wont get Netflix for *****..... We still ain't getting movies from PSN. I would pay for movies from PSN if they "were" availiable....

 » Europe minus UK = jack sh*t

Europe as always is left in the cold. Here in Belgium we don't have playtv, no xbox movies, nothing. Maybe it's better this way anyway since we still have downloadlimits here... Sucks to live in Belgium.

   Re: andre_euro - 2009-10-26
 » hmm

Does america not have download limits or sumthing?, i thought it was a common thing around the world, my limits 15gbs a month.... thats why this streaming thing wouldnt make a lick of difference to me, or most people here(from New Zealand)

   Re: GUNBEHINDTHESUN - 2009-10-26
 »  andre_euro, I live in California...

I have Charter cable internet with the 10Mbps service and I download and stream probably 20GB worth weekly with no problems. I guess it depends on the service and where you live along with online traffic that matters.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2009-10-27
 » ...

Most of the standard plans in major cities of the U.S and Canada give you 50-100 gigs a month, then as you pay for faster/premium plans you get upwards of 200gigs and unlimited....

   Re: cenobyte - 2009-10-27
 » ...

Well here in Belgium I pay 64 $ / month for my Internet connection. That includes a 15mbps service with a limit of 25 gigs / month. I can't survice with 25 gigs a month, especially when someday movie streaming becomes available. You can always upgrade to a higher limit but then you pay over a 100$ for 100 gigs / month. I don't know how it is in the rest of the world but i think this is expensive.

   Re: Silver-Tiger - 2009-10-27
 » ..

well, the cool thing in Germany is, that we have no download limits. None. You can get a 16 Mbits for 30 bucks a month with unlimited download traffic.

   Re: xophaser - 2009-10-27
» US do have some limit

I have qwest and a slow 1.5mb download for like $65 a month plus phone. Cable company like comcast have a limit of 250gb a month. I don't know there was one, untill a guy from the Czech Republic living here said there is limit. Most American don't download pirate movies like eastern Europeans. It is just wasteful and you don't need to download everything when you can rent and never watch it again. I guess you can still do youtube or other smaller movies streaming website on the PS3 browers.

   Re: xophaser - 2009-10-27
» I mean not as much

Americans do download pirate movies, just not as much as other country do. So it is not a cap issue here.
