why do people only care about games?
the PS3 has it all and people just care about cheap games and cheap consoles ( Not an indication to start a flame war)

» maybe.
:P remember it must be divx not xvid or otehr.
I dun see the reason for excitement over the new gallery app thing... honestly... the big reason i have pics on my PS3 is for background usage.

Not everyone is you. If you have a large 1080P TV in your living room it is the perfect device for showing off pictures to friends and family.
Not everyone only keeps huge collections of porn on their PS3/PC. The PS3 is a great place to plug in your camera and dump pictures into it, then have them in a communal area to show off to people.
I think it's a great feature and hope that Sony keeps adding things like this.
I am hoping for a more robust video editing tool for the eyetoy....but even what they have now is pretty decent.

the NTFS file system so we can store files more than 4GB to watch those DivX videos.

problem comes when people/groups don't follow the DivX standard when encoding with Xvid.
Xvid supports things like q-pel, custom quant matrix and b-frames but they are not compatible with DivX. This may be the reason why many have not been able to watch some avi files on the PS3. The other reason could simply be that for many, many years, DivX 3.11a was the encoder of choice so now people might find that files which didn't work previously now will.
@ papajag
DivX/Xvid files shouldn't really need to be bigger than 4GB unless you're doing your own HD encoding (like DivX Ultra settings). You could try putting them on the PS3's HDD wirelessly, which is what I do with converted mkv files. A couple of my films are over 11GB whilst the rest of them are over 4.6GB (all too big for FAT32).

I can't contain my excitement about this update' i hope it gets released soon like tomorrow or the day after tops.
Maybe theres more to it than those features like bug fixes and stability improvement, thats how it always has been.

Why waste our time downloading a mandatory update for a photo gallery app? Do you guys at Sony really have nothing better to do with your time and programing resources? I could think of much more important features that you SHOULD be working on..
- In game Music support, not just for specific titles..
- In game Voice chat (even when not playing the same game)
- Remote Play, More GAME titles need to be playable on the PSP via remote play.. Things like HOME or Qore would be nice to access via remote play but as of now 99% of titles and apps are NOT supported.

» "mandatory" update
The photo gallery isn't actually a *mandatory* installation. If you caught what Lempell said in the video:
"After you install the firmware update, you do have to install the photo gallery. This is an option, so you don't have to do it. But if you'd like to do it, it's a little over a hundred megs, so it doesn't take a lot of time..."

» Dude, get a Wii.
Seriously, You obviously belong on a Wii. First of all, the PS3 is NOT a game console, it is a media center WITH gaming functionality and thus, Sony isn't only going to create game related updates in it's firmwares. Second, the reason in game Music isn't supported on all titles is because Microsoft patented this feature already. Sony cant steal the patent. Sony releases features that apply to ALL users, not just 12 year olds that just want to be able to play Ratchet and Clank on their PSP's. The PS3 has great gaming functionality, but, it also has many more functions and if you dont like them, get a Wii and leave the PS3 world. You'll probably like the Wii much better anyway, dumbass Nintendo wont even release a DVD player for it, even though it has the ability to play DVD's.

This will put the nail in the coffin for the TIFF exploit since they probably fixed the photo function/module for the ps3. Well, only way to tell is if someone tries the memory card tiff exploit to see if it's been thwarted. Bummer.

I feel bad, because I was around for the dreamcast and only having to burn one disk to load your DC with, then pop in said burnt game...then it got even easier.......was an awesome system and it died.
Next system I ripped off was the orig xbox...no regrets there, MS has too much money anyways....
Didn't do it with 360, glad the option isn't there for PS3....even though I Wouldnt do it anways because of BRD burner, expensive disks, huge dl's plus whatever other hassles...

I liked my bro's 360 Elite's ca[abilities for media but the PS3 just does it all so much better.
Now all we need is the ability to do in-game private chats, voice messaging, and the ability to send other people music/videos. That last one might not happen but if Instant Messengers and other things can do it, why not PS3?

I would really like to see Sony do a little more for the backwards compatibility in it's 80GB system. Some games (such as Hitman: Contracts) are unplayable due to lag and freezing on my 80GB PS3. That's something they need to fix. I also want to see an in game XMB on DVD movies and PS1/PS2 games. There is no reason this cant be done. Another cool thing would be some sort of plugin system for the browser, so people can add plugins like ad blockers (similar to FireFox plugins).

» I want in-game user music...
That's the only thing I'm jealous of on the 360 is that players can listen to their own music in game. That and their media player has better visual player options but that's not important to me.
Please Sony, patch this soon.

THE FEATURE IS PATENTED BY MICROSOFT. IT WILL NEVER EXIST THE WAY IT DOES ON THE 360 ON THE PS3. I wish people would get this through their heads.

Yeah, it's not gonna happen, it's pretty overrated anyway, i hardly ever use it as i'd prefer to hear the ingame sounds, and what are you talking about? the ps3 "world" visualization is awesome!

» patent not possible
it may be patented but that has nothing to do with ps3 not having in game music it is not possible to patent current technology so only one company can use it on there system especially when it comes to music the reason we haven't got it is simply because Sony don't see it as a priority at this time.

» i heart my PS3
i'm not addicted to games, surfing the web, using it as easy photo storage from camera, watching dramas online, or porn (yeah i said it), or how easy it is to copy my psp music over to the PS3 or if my buddy brings his psp over i can easily steal his stuff and add it to the PS3...........
If i was addicted to any1 of these i will be using 1 of its functions continuously forever...24/7
But i have to ADMIT i am addicted to the PS3 ^_^
with all PS3 has to offer and we will continue to get more great stuff added in the firmware update making the PS3 a 1 ticket stop 4 me
the best thing of all is that all of this comes free at no cost so how can i complain

why does sony not say everything thats in their update? they only say about the picture thing, not about the other stuff. how are people gonna be able to use the awesome features provided to them if sony doesnt even tell you!?

like when your about to download it it says one thing about pictures and thats it, i think they should show off what their letting us have, and not make me jump onto qj ( for every update i do) just to see what amazing features these guys brought me next

» yeah.
They'd add in the ability for your PS3 to give you grade-A handjobs but in order to access this feature you'd have to find it in the very depths of the PS3 itself.

» Black and white picture, again
Thanks Sony, it's the second time you forget that half of the world's population use PAL instead of NTSC. Now, although my DVDs and HDD movies work, my Casino Royale Blu-ray is displayed as black and white, just as with 2.50 just a few months ago.
Hope we'll be seeing 2.61 reeeally soon. The screw-ups keep forgetting about PAL and CRT TV's. They couldn't imagine that just because HDTV is selling like never before, people still won't throw out their fully functioning CRT's.
