No 80 GB PlayStation 3s planned for the US...for the moment - Image 1Sony revealed that an 80GB version of their PlayStation 3 will be released in South Korea. However, they have also disclosed some additional information that PS3 fans might be disappointed to hear: there are no plans to release this version in the US for now.

Next Generation placed a call to Sony and got the news from the horse's mouth so to speak. The representative from Sony said that "We're constantly looking at new ... configurations [for PS3], but currently there are no plans to change current hardware offerings [in North America]." The question that is now posed is why South Korea? Well, knowing their penchant for MMORPGs, could it be that they are gearing up for a console MMORPG revolution with a release of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes for the PS3 or some other MMORPG they have been developing in the wings? We can speculate all we want, but the fact is we aren't getting it in the near future.

So hopefully, if the US market shows enough demand, we might be getting it sooner than later. Be sure to check back for more updates on the PlayStation 3's 80 GB version.

PS3 is getting its priced lowered in the US to 499$ this SKU or one with even higher HD space will probably take the 599$ spot. South Korea is very lucky to receive a 80GB PS3 at the same price as the 60GB.

 » Are they serious?

So, instead of trying to reduce production cost, they're releasing a new sku less than a year after their launch?

   Re: kniteowl - 2007-05-22
 » -_-

Why would this not be reducing production costs? It might be harder to source 60GB hard disks and therefore more financially sound to put in an 80 GB one.

Its not a big deal really because its only a 20GB increase in size - I could probably rip out my old laptop's HDD and have an 80GB PS3 (for technically free since that laptop's unused)...

   Re: hahahaha (Unregistered) - 2007-05-23
 » its just a HDD

so what? everything else is the same. I bought a 160GB HDD for my ps3. Does that mean devs will make games for ps3s with 160GB HDDs?

2.5" SATA HDDs:
20GB
60GB
80GB
100GB
120GB
160GB
(prolly more than that too)

WOW!!! thats 6 SKUS!!! Good job Sony!

 » .

- antaeus, there's never been any mention of making the 60GB SKU the equivalent of the 20GB, they phased that out remember? I don't really see them ever going back to a 2 SKU system when there's no advantage for them to do so.

- They're not releasing a new SKU, it happens to have a different sized HDD. The reason is that HDD platters are only made in certain sizes meaning that it actually becomes more expensive to produce smaller HDDs once larger ones become more commonplace.

Sony are working on reducing costs, as is every company. They're all in it for the sales and the profit, why would Sony be any different?

- Enrico, the reason that they're releasing this SKU in Korea first is largely because Korea tends to be the testing ground for a lot of technology, ever been to a gadget blog and seen a mobile phone that seems 50 years in the future? Usually they're Korea exclusive.

South Korea's a very tech-geeky nation (in a good way) and you only have to look at their Internet speeds to see this - Microsoft can show off about the eDRAM's bandwidth all they like, Korea's Internet speeds practically surpass it.

» the 60gb better go down

if in korea the 80gb is about $550 US dollars. Sony better drop the 60gb down to $500. And sell the 80gb with hdmi wires and head set for i say $650. That'll be smart sony.

 » seriously shut up

So what?? Yeah, sony can get the 80 gb drives cheaper and instead of causing confusion like microsoft does in this country with fifty "choices" they are just gonna release the 80 gb in korea. Big deal, hey guys, you can go on pricewatch and buy an 80 gb 2.5 drive for $50.. Or if you really want to be cool, a 200 gb drive is only $150 now!! Then you can laugh at MS fanboys.. This is why sony included instructions on how to change the drive in the manual...

Re: are you retarded? (Unregistered) - 2007-05-22
 » what?

What the ***** are you saying? PS3 has as many "choices" as Microsoft.

360 core ---> 360 premium ----> elite

Ps3 20gig-----> ps3 60gig ----Ps3 80gig

and the ps3 20gig is stripped of alot more than a core to a premium making it much more confusing.

 » ur an idiot

it's just a different harddrive and nothing else unlike the XBox in which the SKUs has different specs...

i know a couple of people who has upgraded their PS3 to higher gbs... should we count their PS3 as another Sony sku???? mine has 250gb hd now my PS3 is probably the fourth kind of PS3 now is it???? how about my friend who has 120 gb hd??? will that be the fifth one??? it's just the hd moron and nothing more.

 » Upgrade

Its not hard to upgrade you HDD if you really want a bigger drive. or you can even use a portable or backup hdd if you want to expand your system. I am fine with Sonys market plan at the present besides they aren't going to change it anytime soon.

Xbox 360 = fail. wtf 120gb?? gtfo...

   Re: Jin Wu - 2007-05-22
 » Hell Yeah!

That's what I'm talking about! 360 owners talk about the 80 gig lik sony has to make games seperately for it like they do core 360s lol!!!

It's cheaper just to put in your own!

Re: Quixand is boring, always one sided posts (Unregistered) - 2007-05-23
»  Jin Wu the 20gig PS3 is exactly the same problem for devs

You talk crap, MS is dropping the core(or they may sell it lower than the price of the Wii) anyway just like Sony have dropped the 20gb version.

The 360 core and the PS3 20gb are both in exactly the same position, if devs want to please the people who DONT WANT to upgrade their PS3 HD then the PS3 is stuck with 16gb(after format) max for use with the harddrive , just like if they want to please the core owners(which there are not many of now anyway)they would be in excatly the same position as the PS3 20 gig problem.

» Xbox 360 Vs. The True and Only Next-Gen Console PS3

Based on reports and statistics...
- PS3: 3.2 million consoles have been sold (during Nov. 2006 - Apr. 2007)
(0.53 million consoles per month)
- Wii: 7.3 m sold (Nov. 2006 - Apr. 2007)
(1.21 m per month)
- X360: 9.0 m sold (Nov. 2005 - Apr. 2007)
(0.5 m per month)

- Wiis are being sold with fastest rate...
Wii > PS3 > X360
- Wii consoles are only for kids (parents want to waste least amount of money for their br+ts and b+tches).
- Wiis are only for parties (when your friends come to your house).
- Wiis are for gifts to the close people.
- So many analysts at different organization said that either PS3 or X360 will eventually win this new-war in several years.
- Wii consoles don’t have longevity (Wii = GameCube II = fad).
Based on the above factors, let’s only talk about the worthy candidates: PS3 and X360.

PS3 consoles are sold with slightly faster selling-rate than X360’s. Let me just add more info here...
- X360: 7.5 m sold (Nov. 2005 - Nov. 2006)
(0.57 million consoles per month)
- X360: 1.5 m sold (Dec. 2006 – Apr. 2007)
(0.3 m per month)

PS3 (0.53 m per month) > X360 (0.3 m per month)
MS sold 0.57 million X360s per month because it was totally a monopoly (it’s immoral); gamers had no other choices (options) to choose from until Nov. 2006. So, who (what) can save this ever-falling X360 and Microsoft (from hell)? To be frank with you, I’m not sure. So, you stup+d Xbox fanboys just need to learn how to shut your mouth. I’m talking to you with actual data and flat facts based on factual information.

Remember this - every price tag (cost) below is in Canadian dollar. Also, every price is tax-inclusive.
- An X360 console (high end, 20GB): $570
- One game: $90
- Live Subscription Fee: $1,030 ($103 per year, 103 x 10 years = 1030)
You must waste $1,030 only for online usage. Will you play online games only for this year, and never play online-games from next year? That’s non-sense, idi+ts.
* Above are mandatory (vital, must have) accessories.

If you only calculate for one year online fee, you must have $763 to buy an X360 console (You must have $1,690 to buy an X360 console for 10 years).
If anyone had $763, he would buy a PS3 console instead of an X360.
One PS3 console (high end, 60GB) + above mandatory elements: $798

Ah, I almost forgot to mention 'the future-proof device' called Blu-ray drive. You earn (for free) at least $1,150 if you pay $798. Blu-ray drive is a free bonus. It’s that simple.
- Sony Blu-Ray Player: $1,370
- Samsung Blu-ray Player: $1,150
X360 console + power brick + HD output (HD-DVD add-on) are much bigger and much heavier than the PS3 console (a PS3 console includes everything).

X360 fanboys say most gamers buy new consoles only to play games, not to watch movies. I'll just say one thing to them since I don't want to waste too much time to educate these illogical, unreasonable, and insensible mor+ns. I have lived countless number of days so far, and I have never seen one single person (human being) who hates watching movies. As far as I can think of, all human creatures on the planet called Earth have a habit of watching movies regularly. X360 fanboys, how far (or low) are you willing to go to defend your company (Microsoft) and your lost console (X360)? X360 is already shut up; X360 is not a losing console; X360 is a lost console.

So many professional analysts said that X360 console's life-span is 5 years. It means the current X360 can’t handle the new games which will be released after 2009. Those analysts said that PS3 can handle all the future games until 2015. Then X360 fanboys must waste another $800 to buy a newly designed (sounds familiar? - cough – Elite - eh hem) X360 in 4 years from now on. Why do you want to support X360 console when X360 will last half the period of PS3?

Wii = last-gen console (GameCube II).
X360 = current-gen (suitable for 2005 - 2009).
PS3 = the future, the only next-gen (perfect for 2006 - 2015).

BillGates Couldnt ve done it better my friend. That wot im always trying to say.

Xbox only cared bout beatin PS3.
Xbox360 still has old gen DVD - did many/any ps2 games come out in CD lol(well maybe a few).

PS2 had DVD playa which was the WOW factor.
PS3 jus doin the same thing - we cant rely on DVD for games like we couldnt rely on CDs 4 PS2...

Drakes Fortune pres already said in Demo Vid that they needed higher storage ie BluRay.

U 360 Fanboys no IM SO RITE - DVD is not gna be gd enough, only for a yr or 2

   Re: U R SAD (Unregistered) - 2007-05-23
»  na2ru1 You actully read all through that Biased one sided rubbish ? LMAO that crap has been posted a million times on this site

Xbox only cared bout beatin PS3.

Answer - Xbox has beaten PS3 outside of Japan, and in Japan PS3 is fading away now where Sony used to be king its down to less than 8,872 (-44%) per week now compare that to the Wii which is at 66,657 per week more if they could make them fast enouth.

PS2 had DVD playa which was the WOW factor.

Answer yes the Wow factor was after a week most people complained that it made a grinding sound when open and after Two weeks Sony had to replace thousands of them because they were faulty.

PS3 jus doin the same thing - we cant rely on DVD for games like we couldnt rely on CDs 4 PS2...

Answer 360 is not DVD its DVD9 DUAL LAYER and its also the same drive which is in almost everyones home dvd system and PC, Blu Ray and HD-DVD have made no impact on the DVD9 system and never will because the time dvd9 goes away new formats will have arrived and will proberly be a hell of a lot cheaper to.

And WTF has your post or the One above you got to do with the news that the 80 gb PS3 is not planned for the USA anyway..

I don't understand why you're so worked up about this. I play both consoles and are happy with both of them.

We (tha gaming community) don't need people bashing the consoles we love, much less someone like you who is doing it just because you like one console more than another.
