Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 consoles - Image 1It was previously mentioned by analysts that a new set of consoles should be rolling out by the end of the decade. However, what exactly does the next generation of consoles entail to step up the quality of gaming and home entertainment?

In the case of Microsoft, a new IP console which will rival Sony's own machine as a gaming console and as a content management system is the answer. As such, Microsoft squashed any further ideas of producing a Blu-ray Xbox 360.

Microsoft was adamant on sticking to the digital distribution model to deliver HD content for its consumers. Aaron Greenberg, group product manager of Xbox 360 was quoted as saying:

Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience. We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content.

To deliver such an ambitious new project into homes, both Sony and Microsoft met with global telecommunication companies to discuss home gateways and the delivery of IP content. Both companies recognized that IP delivery content will become an important step in the next generation of consoles that they plan to manufacture.

Senior executives from Australian telecommunications company Telstra were convinced that the future of the industry did not simply rely on Blu-ray, but Blu-ray quality content delivered over an IP network. Telstra looked to both Microsoft and Sony to deliver this high quality content through their devices either through downloads or by picking up the content through designated storage kiosks at Telstra mobiles stores.

Telstra plans to become a value-added player in the industry, much like what the built in Blu-ray player did for the PS3 as both a gaming console and an entertainment system. The company is determined to deliver high quality content for all subscribers in its network. This will become particularly useful for countries with relatively slower bandwidth like Australia.

 » Hm..

Is it just me that feels like MS is trying to outperform Sony in every possible way but still don't succeed?

"We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content."

So offering games over PSN isn't distribution of entertainment content? This was new to me.
Screw that Microsoft, We all know that you can lie much better than that. Sony also talks much *****, but at least they don't make it so obvious.

What happend to those glorious ten year console life spans that where promised a little under a year ago?

The ps3 is barly two years old now,....

the year 2008....

omg, ten years goes by so fast..

Actually, Sony said they would support the PS3 for 10 years, not support "exclusively".

This is no different from their current support for the PS2, which, I think, is in its 7th year.

Please read and understand the news before you go and put your foot in your mouth.

there may be a new xbox by the end of the decade but sony aint relesing a ps4 till AT LEAST 2012, my guess is around 2015 they can't even use the cell yet and were talking bout next gen it's just ridiculous.

 » to thinker,

Please note this is a forum of public "opinion"

It;s simply far to early in this generation to be hearing news about next gen consoles.

somehow, you missed the irony of my statment...

it doesnt pay to assume, people have a sense of irony, I suppose.

The only problem with your opinion was that it was stupid.

Thinker is right on with his post. Sony will probably support the PS3 for the next 8 years or so and they can. The PS3 is future proof for much longer than the DVD9 360 lol.

"We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content."

This is mostly correct, they are referring to movies, tv shows, etc. Not just games.

integrating zune marketplace into xbox live will make it complete.
dont care for digital distribution, one scenario where i would is if i burrow hd movie from rental service, maybe i will using digital distribution service than as long as i dont mind waiting for my slow dsl to finish downloading the 5gb data for few hours.

@ Lethal_NFS that was an idiotic statement.Just because the 360 only have DVD9 doesn't mean anything. The ps2 have DVD5 and is going on 8yrs.@death I think MS may come out with a console in 2010,but I would be surprised if ps4 didn't come out a year later at the latest. I think this is good news though.

PS2 is DVD9

Yeah you're right the PS2 used DVDs but you know, it was the most advanced format at the time. Now After two generations they are still using the same format.( the PS2 came out wit

» whoops, accidently pressed "Submit reply"...

What I wanted to say that the PS2 used DVD, the first Xbox used DVD, and the Xbox 360 still uses DVD technology. It was about damn time they used a new format. I think it was one of Microsofts biggest mistakes not to integrate HD-DVD in the Xbox 360 for various reasons.
Firstly, games could have been much bigger and therefore looking better or having more content.
(I'm not saying the X360 look bad, I just mean they could look better with more space.)
Secondly, because of the format wars. I think if the Xbox 360 would have had (lol, is this correct English?) an integrated HD-DVD drive, the format would have ended completely different.

 » Maybe...

These companies should be more focused on providing a great gaming expierience to their fateful consumers instead of dropping everything just because the PS3 got the advantage from Blu-Ray winnng the High-Def format war.
BTW I'm a PS3 fan, but I believe that in order for the gaming market to be successful there needs to be a friendly competition between gamers of each system. Plus, I'm hoping that just because they come out with a new system Microsoft doesn't just drop the 360 like it did with the X box.

Actually most it's games uses DVD5,but a few of them uses DVD9.Also, saying something is future proof doesn't mean it has to have certain specs. The Wii is future proof it's selling well and Devs. are starting to take it more serious.Anything can be future proof as long as it's supported.Specs doesn't mean anything is future proof. The Xbox had much better specs than the ps2.It's all about support that makes a console future proof.

This is irrelevant, to me anyway. I don't buy consoles until they are at least 2 or 3 years old. I just bought the Xbox 360...

Older (yet still good) games are cheaper, the console is cheaper, less problems, more games, etc.

Although, the sooner the next one comes, the sooner Xbox360 games drop drastically. :)

As long as the 360 and PS3 last another 3 years, I'm happy :).

 » Put it this way.

PS3 is like a GTO
360 is just a car.
