Had enough of real-life stunts, but zip on the gameplay? Electronic Arts finally unveils gameplay video of their challenge to the Tony Hawk franchise: SKATE on the Xbox 360and PS3. Now as to whether it shall be a successful challenge? (... There isn't enough gameplay video here to make the call.)

Here the video lands in GameTrailers. Lots of minor street tricks, but no vert. No big air (then again: no vert). Lots of grinds on convenient edges. Still no big air. No clarification if this video is from the PS3 or Xbox 360 version, but it looks like a first build or a common render, so again, we're not going to make substantive judgments off this "first gameplay vid" for SKATE (translation: we'd like to see more "evidence", EA).

To do that is sort of like pulling a 900 when only ten feet off the ground or something.

I always wonder what tony hawk would look like without the arcade game style.

I don't know how much fun it could get though. Maybe someday i'll have a PS3...

I'll go play with my Wii.

I know people are gonna go and flamme this game since it lacks arcade WOW effects materials. That would be taking the direction of this game way off. We skaters see beauty in the way that tricks are executed. Not by the amount of points total..!

Think about it: you get to jump in the air with an object, propel it in the direction that you want with your feet and then catch it to ride away. Also keeping in mind speed, angle of approach, anticipation, landing, height etc etc... That is somethng magical that shouldn't be exagerated like THPS does... Their is SO MUCH to work around with this. Why make so easy... like pressing X for exemple to ollie?

A simple ollie off a ledge for exemple could make my day if it has style to it, or if the spot is "gnarly" to clear... not by doing a freken 1080 backflip! Thats why am going to buy this game and renounce playing THPS. Project 8 lagged so much on my PS3... that was a bummer. But still, they still lack realism.

Did you see the footage? Man those graphics look sweet. The frame rate on the skater is amasing, his speed reacted very well to the angle of aproach etc... I hope that they will have a real time motion for all tricks.

Anyways, looking foward to this game. On my list of favs for inovative ideas:

- Assassin's Creed (Montréal Ubisoft are starting to kick ass);
- SKATE (please motion detectors :D)
- Star Wars Unleached (looks freken awsome)
- GTA 4 (episodic content instead of seperate titles should prove to be interesting)
- Motor Storm (I don't know but it just looks fun to play)

peace :D

I only skimmed through your post, but I agreed with what I read. The graphics look awesome, and I personally love street tricks, especially stuff like that which is actually realistic. Tony Hawk is now just a physics-defying way-too-easy series. I don't care much for all that eight-miles-high very anyways.

"eight-miles-high" VERT ... (not very, heh)

 » Im sorry

Im sorry but I cant agree with you. I agree that THPS is far more unreal but you have to think that is a game, I am a skater too and I already spend way too much time learning new tricks and stuff and I dont want a videogame that makes me learn how to ollie, flip, etc. The graphics in this SKATE are really cool but i still prefer the ones in THPS8 it seems like they flow better but this is just an early preview so i guess they will fix this, anyway, I have welcome every skateboard videogame since 720º from atari wich by the way is one of the best skateboard games ever, and Im sure I will get this one and give it try.

man I've been looking forward to this game, but those tricks looked like *****. totally stiff and too perfect. they had no personality, I thought they used mo-cap for this game. THP8 looks a hell of a lot better. This game is a total Thrasher clone with bad style. I hope it gets cleaned up by release.

back on tony hawk all you want, but it doesn't get better than project 8. no more ollies over cars and the tricks are all mo-capped and feel real.

We'll, It did look good, but I'm not going to compare it to Project 8 since I haven't played it yet.. The fact that It's an EA game just makes me want to stray away from it though.

I got bored with skating games about 3-4 years ago and decided to actually pick up a board myself.. So much more enjoyment.

A realistic skating game that true skaters can truly appreciate. Screw grinding on telephone poles. WTF were they thinking in the first place.

 » nice graphics

The game looks really realistic (with really nice graphics) from the preview. I don't know anything about how well the gameplay actually is or what the storyline is (if there is one). Seems like a fun game though
