Nyko announced last month that they were going to produce the Intercooler unit for the PS3 (just like what they have for the Xbox 360) but they didn't give too many details. So when PS3Land and Nyko got to talking, one of the things they covered was the cooling unit.

Form factor and efficient cooling were built into the PS3 cooling device, says Nyko. The device will blend with the colors and contours of the PS3 (and those are some contours, mind you), and it can be used whether the PS3 is lying down or standing up. Like the Xbox 360 Intercooler, this one plugs into the back of the PS3, and uses the same power pass-through system.

As for the cooling function, this one uses several small fans aligned with the PS3's vents, unlike the Xbox 360's which uses three large fans. Nyko says that this allows for quieter operation (a common complaint on the QJ comments on 360 Intercooler, it seems). Rather than blowing cold air into the PS3, these fans suck the hot air out, and are designed to help the PS3's own fans in cooling the unit.

Microsoft had expressed its doubts about the 360 Intercooler, to the point that it's one of the questions that Customer Support asks when you report a bricked 360. Nyko mentions their "great history with Sony", citing that they're the only licensed manufacturer of third party memory cards for the current-gen PS2. It will be interesting to hear Sony's take on the PS3 Intercooler.
