bill o'reillyHit the road, Jack Thompson. There's a new anti-game crusader in town. Bill O'Reilly, controversial talk show host and occasional David Letterman sparring partner, doesn't think highly of gamers and fanboys.

In his broadcast "Young and addicted to machines", the outspoken O'Reilly blamed machines (e.g. game consoles) for the deterioration of the American Society. In fact, he referred to them as the new drugs and alcohol and gamers as the new junkies.

A large portion of the population, mostly... under the age of 45, who don’t deal with reality - ever. They don’t know what day it is... they don’t know what their neighbor looks like. They don’t know anything… because they are constantly diverted by a machine... it takes a person away from reality because they’ve created their own reality…

Then he sunk his teeth on the PS3 calling it a "big, big problem" because he says some "people get addicted to it, just like opium, just like drugs and alcohol." How about pain killers, the kind that fellow conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh is addicted to? Now Sony has always been crowing about how powerful the PS3 is but we didn't know how powerful until O'Reilly pointed out that the machine is "going to change every single thing in this country."

Wow! Every single thing? But wait! There's more! O'Reilly then takes on the entire video game industry and says it will send more people to the unemployment line. Why, you ask? Because video games make gamers too stupid to hold down jobs. You think we're kidding? His words were:

Because the skill set that is necessary to earn a decent living is being de-emphasized in a fantasy world of football games and shooting zombies and all that... Now you have the “knows” and the “know-nots”, because if you spend all your youth being prisoners of machines... you’re not going to know anything... you’re gonna fail.

That's funny because a while back the U.S. Army said soldiers who grew up playing video games are better at operating CROWS (common remotely operated weapon stations). It's not only the U.S. Army who feels that way. Even the South Koreans were turning to professional online gamers to provide support for the development of war-simulation programs. Being a very big supporter of the Iraq invasion and probably every Republican-led war, shouldn't O'Reilly be promoting video games?

Speaking of wars, O'Reilly says game consoles has made him fear for the United States because "believe me, the Jihadists? ... they’re not playing the video games. They’re killing real people over there." Uh, so you want gamers to get off their butts and start killing real people as part of their training to defend the U.S.?

Oh, really O'Reilly. We think David Letterman was right when he said 60 percent of what you say is crap.

How else did y'all complete 3,000 online matches on Fight Night Round 3???!!! What do you do, play video games all day and all night long!!! *****S!!!!!!!!!

   Re: Heath (Unregistered) - 2006-11-19
» he has a good point

I'm sorry but I agree with a lot of his points. We are becoming a very antisocial society where it's "akward" to interact with other human beings and we would rather be glued to the television or playing a game than to actually get out and interact with other people. Some of us gamers have a good balance but many, especially fanboys do not have a balance of this idea at all and are wasting their lives away.

   Re: Anon (Unregistered) - 2006-11-20
 » Good point?

Someone was saying he has a good point. The society isn't becoming antisocial because of video games. It's becoming antisocial because you don't know if your neighbor is murder or rapist and it is just harder to trust people now-a-days. I don't really understand why they think gaming isn't a social event. It gives people things to talk about, a reason to get together that doesn't cause bodily harm (assuming you don't play 48hrs straight).

bill o'reily may be a conservative nut job, and his statements may not be entirely true, but there is A LOT of truth to what he is saying. i've seen people who've practically lost their souls to games like diablo and world of warcraft. i love video games and they're my favorite hobby and i give up some social time to have more time for them. but i still try and maintain a balance between video games and other things so that i don't lose my whole future. heed his warning to a degree and don't dismiss it just cause he insults your favorite passtime. he's not making all this up, folks. and im surprised how accurately, albeit unfairly, he has described the situation.

Bill O' Lie-ly might have a point about machines being the cause for the deterioration of the American Society... although the true culprit has got to be television. Especially since people actually listen to and believe the propaganda that is broadcasted by Faux News and everything else that Ruppert Murdoch owns. The scary thing is that O' Lie-ly believes his own spin, especially the Jihadist comment. I'm sure he would prefer everyone to stop wasting time with fictitious imperialism and genocide found in some video games, and participate in the real thing by signing up for the war in Iraq. David Letterman is wrong... EVERYTHING Bill O' Reilly says is crap.

yeah, it has nothing to do with bad parenting, or the fact that over 80% of the country is working poor, thus creating the desperate, survive or die situations that can cause certain people to do horrible crimes.

nope. it's video games. the root of all evil.

there was recently evidence brought to light that Cain bludgeoned Able to death with a Nintendo DS. and the reason why Japan bombed Pearl Harbor was because the US got the highest score in Dig Dug.

video games are not completely innocent from influencing certain people from committing heinous crimes, but if one were to fully explore the backgrounds and lifestyles of those criminals who use the "gaming made me do it" excuse, they'd find that almost all of them have a past history involving poor parenting, abuse, and being outcast by his/her peers in the social heirarchy simulator known as high school.

i've been playing video games since 1985, and the only thing that kept me from punching a hole through my sisters chest like in Mortal Kombat was because my mother (you know, those people that feed, clothe and house you while you're a young tyke; and sometimes when you're an adult) taught me the difference between right and wrong. i don't go out stealing and maiming and raping people because i know better.

i'm sick of faux politicians diverting Americans from the real issues that matter (ie, curing diseases, homelessness, unemployment, the constant degradation of American values), and trying to pin the blame on machines that are created simply for the entertainment of others (and to make a profit of course, but that goes without saying).

Bill O Reilly should be dipped in horse manure and forced to parade around the city with a propellor beanie on his head.

Look, before they used to use propaganda on television to desensitize people into what they are today. Now they have video games which are twice as affective. Did you know that fifty percent of soldiers in World War One would shoot the ground instead of shooting their enemies? Now only one percent will shoot away from the enemy! People these days are so brainwashed by US propaganda that they don't even realize what they are defending.

   Re: WWI? (Unregistered) - 2006-11-20
 » Such mean-spiritedness....

Actually, the reason why a lot of troops in WWI were doing that was because the military in general back then wasn't too comprehensive in their training systems.

This meant that whatever training they had, it just couldn't prepare them for the harsh realities of battlefield shock.

Remember - it wasn't until WW II that the concept of "Shell Shock" or post-traumatic stress disorder became a part of modern psychology.

Don't go blaming this on propaganda - and no, a lot us are at least aware enough to know that we're in Iraq for the wrong reasons - why do you think the Democrats had so much support during the recently concluded elections?

And by the way, no need to label politically - that kind of pigeon-boxing may make for easier comprehension, but it breeds bigotry too.

Bill OReilly is paid based on the number of viewers he has. The more controversy he creates, no matter how retarded it sounds, the more people will watch. He says these things because he knows it will create controversy and therefore get more attention. More viewers means better ads, which means a bigger bonus for himself.

Intellectuals will never support the level of extremism required to create the world Bill OReilly describes. However, Bill's on TV and TV is all about ratings.

» O'Reilly Is An Old Fool

Bill O'Reilly knows nothing about the people who play games. Yeah there may be some people who don't have a life and that is all they do is play games, but I think a majority of the people who enjoy games are intelligent and hard working people. I personally love games and have played them since the early 80's and have owned and still own many games and systems. I stood in line for launches and even spent hundreds of dollars at a time for games and equipment to play them but that is just a hobbie I enjoy. O'Reilly just doesn't know what the times of today is all about and he wants to be stuck in an absurd past. That is something I can't stand about old fools, they can be so judgmental and misinformed that they rant and rave about everything from how the world is today to about how it should be and don't realize what things are really going on sense they are stuck in their little shell of reality themselves. I personally have a pretty good job troubleshooting and fixing high tech equipment and if anything videogames have helped me get interested in learning more about technology and cultures. Old man O'Reilly needs to just die already and let someone else unstinky and new with an open knowledgeable mind take over.
