upcoming Home update - Image 1

PlayStation Home's getting quite a bit of content in the days to come. According to a post from TedTheDog, we're finally getting the Street Fighter IV outfits in the next few weeks, and they're prepping up for a lot more games that will be supporting Home.

The square will be updated maybe as early as this week, and they are also trying to figure out a way to let you play your own music, as well as sharing music with friends. Here's the complete list of updates from TedTheDog:
  • Street Fighter IV
    • The unlockable items are already available in Home and are rewarded for winning online matches in the game.
    • Purchasable outfits will be available within a few weeks.
  • Home Square
    • A slightly updated Home Square will arrive in early March, possibly as early as the 5th.
  • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Space
    • This is currently being worked on and we hope to release this for you within a few weeks
  • SOCOM: CONFRONTATION Space
    • This Space is also nearly ready but a specific date for its release is not yet available, but we are expecting it within a few weeks.
  • Siren: Blood Curse & Resident Evil 5, Warhawk
    • Content for all of these have arrived here and are being prepared for SCEE's audience now. We will bring you more information on these as it becomes available.
  • Game Launching
    • Many titles are preparing support for Game Launching but this often requires a patch to their title. It is not our intention to be announcing new releases and patches to other titles here in the Home community but hope to bring you news in the coming weeks.
  • Music within Home
    • Playing your own music to others within Home is an extremely complex licensing issue that will take time to solve, if it is at all possible.
    • In the meantime we are investigating various ways of allowing you to play your own music to yourself. We are also talking to other 3rd parties about making their music available to you in various ways.

All sounds good. I quite like Home and it's nice to see it grow. I would like to see the Uncharted space

How is playing your own music from the HDD hard? If a complex, system resource-intensive game like KZ2 can let me play my music while resulting in zero framerate lag, then Home should too. I can understand the licensing issues though.

The problem is that the people who play the music don't have the rights to redistribute it, Sony can find some way of allowing us to play music inside Home but it will probably take a while

 » kz2 ins't so powerful

It's not as system resource-intensive as you think, it was reported that it DOESNT push the broadband engine cell to its peak and it didnt even have to install. Just because it looks amazing doesn't mean it takes a whole lot of specs to support it, I dont see 1080p support for it.

It's already known that KZ2 couldn't have music for it's SP since SP pushes the console more than the MP does. Guerilla already said they can push more out of the PS3 than they did with KZ2.

It's easy to just let people listen to music off their HDD. How is that redistributing it? Streaming is another story, but even then, it's not like you're GIVING them the files or anything.

It doesn't have an install cause they found a way through developing it, to not have one. I shouldn't have to remind you that Uncharted Drakes of Fortune a pristine new IP didn't have it either. I don't see how Killzone 2 not having an install means the game isn't powerful or good.

 » It's equivalent to a 'public performance'

@NarooN: I don't think that the legal problem is about 'redistributing' the music. If you're in an online lobby and you play a song, I would think it's a "public performance" --just like if you asked a bunch of people to come to some event at an auditorium that you charged them $5 each to attend: you're actually profiting, and using the music as an enticement to (or reward for) entrance. ...Now, you or I don't get any $5 entry fee from people if we took them to our personal space for a meeting and played tunes. However, what compounds the concept of "public performance" in this manner, is that Sony *does* get money for the gadgets in the space (or virtual clothing), as well as advertising money from their partners in Home.

I wish the Uncharted space would be something big that players can explore (like caves, bridges, etc.)...
