QJ readers certainly took notice when we posted about the possibility of PS3 Firmware 2.40 carrying the in-game XMB. While we still don't have any formal confirmation of this, here's a new video we found that should pique your interest.

According to what we've been able to figure out, this PS3News video is of an in-game XMB running on PS3 2.40 Test Firmware. What this means is that this video is supposedly footage from a debug version of the firmware rather than a final version.

The video apparently shows off the in-game XMB running a Ridge Racer 7 demo. During the XMB portions of the video, you'll also notice that the you can access a trophy collection, as well as various debug modes.

In any event, we'll leave this as a rumor until we get further confirmation from Sony. Till then, we suggest you keep checking QJ for more updates regarding the potential of PS3 firmware 2.40.

Cant wait!! The trophey system will add a whole other level to games, and playing music whilst playing game is awesome.
Anyone know if you can access the XMB when running PS2 software?

Where do you get a debug unit?

   Re: DontCryIfYouDie - 2008-06-08
 » You Cant

well likely hood of that is very very slim, debug units are used by developers and what haveyo to test things out.

why wait for all the cars to speed away

maybe its not inorder to show the fact that the ingame xmb doesnt pause the game

maybe thats something that sony is working on

also the time continues to move on so....

anyway good time and date finally aswell as in game xmb

im surprised it didnt show you music in game
and its either iffy or not wanting to create a flame war by saying how sony is crap with no music etc

The guy plays badly on purpose to try and show that it's legit.

Are there any 360 games that have the ability to play your own music while playing them I know of at least one PS3 game that lets you do it (Burnout Paradise). None of the 360 games I own let you do that, true I don't own too many 360 games but I haven't heard of any that let you play your own music ingame. Someone enlighten me.

If your listening to music then launch the game I think the music keeps going after the Xbox 360 logo pops up. I've never seen it but I heard it from people.

In the other video which had Bioshock in and showed in-game xmb and trophies, when the xmb was brought up it paused the game, so i take it that it only pauses it in certain games

   Re: MrBlonde746 - 2008-06-07

Why only pause certain games? I'm pretty sure $ony would let it pause all games.. But since this is a Debug Firmware they didn't use it so they cane make some changes.. but thats just my 2 cents.

With the current firmware most games pause if you hit the PS button, not all but most ive played.

» Reasons why this is fake or edited:

This is a fake: Notice why:
- Before he enters the game (while scrolling around the XMB) and when he scrolls accross to settings, the video SKIPS. Now for whatever reason, this only seems to happen AT THIS time in the video. Funnily enough its when he's showing us the debug 'settings'. Now you may argue that this skipping is because of the video capture, but it only seems to happen at this time.

- He doesn't actually show any of the 'In-game' XMB features working. Notice he never quits the game, plays some music or anything else.

- The clock in the top right corner is too big and is out of place. It could be the fact that he's using an SD TV but even that shouldn't cause it to be THAT out of proportion. And speaking from a design perspective, if this actually is the REAL FW 2.40, I doubt Sony would make the date and time that big, put it in a position like that and make it PERMANENTLY visible.
Yes, the PSP has the time and date permanently visible but 1. That is a portable console. 2. Its not as big. 3. It is placed as far in the corner as possible.

   Re: NarooN - 2008-06-07
 » no.

It's real. If you saw the earlier vid you'd know this.

I don't have a valid argument against that ugly skip that was in the video, so I will say maybe it was a capture issue, the firmware issue, or something. Don't know.

It didn't show him do it, but clearly you could see where there was an extra option in the XMB GAME section that said "Quit Game" and under it "SD Loader 1.00", so it's pretty legit.

There's no problem with the placement of the clock, and users will most likely be able to disable it at their wish. This is a REAL prototype of the 2.40 Firmware. It's running off a test unit, so obviously anything is subject to change.

Now, on to my real comment. :)

I like how smooth In-Game XMB runs. I don't know why the current version of in-game xmb runs so slow (games like Resistance, where you can access your Friends List, it runs with a noticeable slowed speed) but oh well! Can't wait. It'll probably release on the same day as MGS4 too.

how bout this notion, you have way 2 much time on yours hands valix
   by Geosondaman - 2008-06-07
 » It should be legit

Judging by the look of the video, I'd say with 95% certainty that this is the real deal. Since there are complete intuitive options that you would expect from the XMB as others have mentioned. Anyhow, we will see come June 12th if indeed this comes out during that week since June 12th is a thursday. Well, the store updates on thursdays, not sure about firmwares.

   Re: NarooN - 2008-06-08
 » hmm.

I forgot what pattern the Firmware releases follow, if any. I think it's on a special day, but it may be random.

Firmwares have been coming out on Tuesdays.. and i read somewhere it was this Tuesday (10th), so here's hoping i'm right.
Anyways, looks good. I'll wait another couple of weeks if i have too :)

   Re: Polansky - 2008-06-08
 » Yea

From what i can remember firmwares were released on Tuesdays. Since some sources said it will be before MGS4 and on the 10th (Tuesday) it would be perfect while I play MGS4 :]

Darn it...I won't be with my PS3 until late August since I'm overseas in Asia lol..I need to wait until that time to go back to NA. Guess I won't be able to test it out as the others do.

 » great footage

if this is what we should expect, an XMB with all icons, thats great.

I was expecting only to see the in-game functions with friend list, invite and music.

Guess since nothing is out today, it will be next week instead.. ohh well .. its coming.. just don't know when exactly..
