Playstation3 - Image 1 There appears to be some major problem with the new FW 2.70 rolled out by Sony just yesterday. According to our tipster, doublefanboy, this firmware messed up the PS2-PS3 game adapters, which now causes the PS3 unit to freeze.

According to him, this was not a problem with the earlier firmwares. Apart from this, another discovered issue was the bricking of the PS3 if it is plugged in while updating.
In the Shoryuken Forums, complaints have been coming in, varying from mixed up buttons to the joypad causing the PS3 freeze. There's even a rumor that game shares for PSN might be disabled in this update.

No official word from Sony, yet, though. So until then, to those who are using the said PS2-PS3 game adapters, just be careful. Some of their forums members have already tried contacting Sony on this matter. Hopefully they'll respond to this soon.

Thanks to doublefanboy for the heads up!

There are plenty of patches for DAX firmwares.

"...another discovered issue was the bricking of the PS3 if it is plugged in while updating..."

...Because, of course, there is a way to update the PS3 *without* plugging it in. :-O ???? Whatcha' talking' 'bout, QJ?

This is timely news, though. I was just thinking about buying one an expensive PS2 accessory. Maybe I'll wait on that now, for firmware 2.71. ;-)

 » i believe

they mean when the ps2-ps3 adaptor is "plugged in" thats all i can figure since it's not very clear

   Re: jgr9 - 2009-04-03
 » ...

He wasn't talking about the PS3 controller.

We know. But it sounded like he meant the system itself when plugged in causes the issue while updating, so damonous point was, how else do you update your system without 'it' being plugged in.
But fade does elaborate more on what they mean. :P

 » well

Well last night after i updated super stardust HD didnt work right so i had to turn it off manually then re-start it.
this seemed to fix the issue. but i'v had to re-download wipeout HD.
it gives me the error
"cannot read file format"
when the games boot up. havent had the issue again, kinda don wanna try the ps2 emulation now till its known that this has been fixed.

 » This update also includes

a small packet of red LEDs which will be mailed to PS3 owners courtesy of Sony. When asked what they were for or if it was prudent to have unqualified technicians install them, Sony replied, "Well, you could arrange them into a cheereo, a red circle, if you will, and it will have similar effects to other consoles. We're doing this to 'reach across the aisle' if you will to provide robust functionality not previous available on our console".

This update might have also messed with my media server sharing stuff. kinda unsure bout this one tho cause thats always been a lil iffy.
well everything showed up last night before the update and today only about half my stuff does.
blah.. i need a bigger HDD for it so i dont have to stream it no more..
*pain in the zinger*

I hope it's not the firmware. I use PS3 media server and always make sure I use the latest version. Maybe try that if you don't already use it. I've had various problems in the past that ended up being fixed by new releases.

PS3 Media Server is working fine for me. Have been using it most of the day for my weeks tv shows.

I'm glad I found absolutely no value whatsoever in this latest useless update and therefore did not even bother to do it.

No, he's not a fanboy, he just has a working brain unlike you. Everyone makes mistakes from tike to time, even a multi-billion dollar company. Ever heard of "Nobody is perfect?"

I haven't had any problem either, but I haven't ried a PS2 controller adapter yet and am not likely to now.

By the way I'm also using a 60GB model.

 » 2.71 soon.

Yeah, looks like there will be a 2.71 soon. If this were another 2.40, i.e. semi-bricking systems, 2.71 would already be here.

Haven't noticed any problems at all. Everythings working fine and I do use a PS2-PS3 adaptor for my X-Arcade sticks when playing Street Fighter IV and it's working just fine. Just had a half hour game on it a few hours ago and that's a couple days since the firmware updated. Music files are running fine too. Dunno what's happened to 'mr420toki' and his PS3 up there.

 » ps3 freezing

ps3 freezing after this update. freezes when using browser, psn and games, home also effected. All was fine till this update. Gta iv stopps responding for several seconds. Also the rest of the freeze problems need a hard reset to get the ps3 working again and I am not using ps2 controller or other devices.
This sucks bad!!!

   Re: lavino - 2009-04-05
 » I had freezes too

At first it was caused by I have a TAG just plugged in (not connect to anything) even I remove it I encounter random freezes now.
