40GB PS3 - Image 1While a lot of people are worried that backwards compatibility on the Sony PlayStation 3 may die along with the discontinuation of the 80GB SKU, a glimmer of hope was seen in EGM's latest issue.

PlayStation Network director Eric Lempell was interviewed and he said that there were certain "possibilities" in the matter.

According to the PSN head, Sony's online service could host PlayStation 2 titles and run them on the PS3 with software emulation. Still, he made it clear that there are no solid plans regarding such a setup.

"We haven't talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possibles," Lempell said.

The 80GB PS3 is currently the only PS3 model in stores with the ability to emulate the PS2's Emotion Engine chip. The cheaper, lower-end 40GB SKU discards backwards compatibility altogether.

I thought the 40 GB SKU could still play PS1 games?

It can. They better not drop BC if they launch a new SKU, because people who have PS3s are still buying PS2 titles. I have my 80gb, so i dont have to worry at the moment, but they need to keep BC.

uh dont sell your ps2, even if you do its quite cheap now. Im very fond of the current ps2 design myself esp with its integrated network adapter. it wouldnt hurt to keep the ps2 when you upgrade for maybe your lil brother or company on another television in your house. Or it can be retro fitted with an aftermarket screen for mobile play. Its very versitle little gamer box. How bout that Xbox1? bulky SOB!

 » I want Universal BC !!

I already have a 60 gig, so BC isnt a problem with me (well US BS anyway. :p) They really need to; however, broaden there horizions to make BC universal so certain people can play can play imports. I mean:

1. You spend 500 bucks on a system, and you cant even play imports that you legally purchase.

2. Heres a fun fact. I actually own the Ore no Ryori import disc for PS1. This game has also been released in the Japan PS Store for quite some time now. I find it funny that you can play Import PS1 games from the PS Store; however, if you were to have the actual disc, you cant play it.

My opinion (If i were a Sony buisness man), if Sony wants to bring back BC, and bring down a good amount of people from pirating, they should make the system Universally BC with legal games !

 » Still!!

People are complaining still, be glad your playing PS2 games, some people haven't and its their fault for not buying the 60GB version and saying "I don't want to spend that much, i'll wait" Your fault. I have my Chrome 60GB version and im loving it!!!
