PlayStation FW 1.82 - Image 1Over on Sony's PlayStation Blog, there's news of the upcoming PS3 firmware update 1.82, which is actually set to come in a matter of days.

According to Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, the main feature of the update is actually AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) playback support, but that only seems to be a preliminary reporting of the details.

Lempel also mentions increased PS2 software compatibility, so you can probably expect a follow-up article from the PlayStation Blog once the firmware update is ready. Hopefully, the next update will also include an actual release date, so you guys know when to turn on your PS3s to receive FW 1.82.

Thanks to Geo for the tip!

 » DivX

When will the PS3 support DivX / Xvid ??? This is unbeleivable that this media center is not supporting natively this format. Please Sony, do something about this in the next firmware :)

   Re: CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2007-06-27
 » I Agree

These along with WMV and Quicktime would be nice. Another annoying thing is it doesn't support newer flash formats. There are times when I want to use the browser for stuff and I can't even see things of interest because of the lack of support.

   Re: Enedok (Unregistered) - 2007-06-27
 » Flash

Sony cant support flash higher then 7 since adobe only have flash 8 - 9 for mac, pc and unix.
Flash 7 is a bit more open so sony can implement it in the ps3 browser.

About Divx, Why should sony support a standard mostly used to download copies of their own movies? Sony wont add Divx support before the end of ps3 life to boost sale then.

To whoever said WMV, your a complete dumbass. WMV+ WINDOWS media video, emphasizing windows, as a microsoft product, and if you havent realized yet microsoft is a competitor?!?

I wonder what WMA stands for? WINDOWS Media Audio?

Doesn't something like the PSP or even PS3 play that?

Think about what you say next time, Jare d.

ps3 already supports divx and xvid but you'll have to use nero media home for the steaming, it's really easy!

Just use TVersity along with the PS3 DLNA function. Use Kazaa Lite Codec-Pack and you'll be able to watch almost any type of video format on your PS3.

Yep that's the best choice, plays nearly every video format there is.

 » Features

Since the PS (first one) Sony never added a really great feature the people wanted to have. There are so many things at the PS3 and PSP witch where so great to have with just a little bit work of the programmers and they will never add them!!!! This is the Thing why Sony will never REALLY lead the market!!!! (DIVX,WMV,adding folders at PSP and PS3, a GOOD medialibrary, streaming on the PS3,converting DVD to PSP whitout PC and so on...)

folders would be nice
you are either a hater or a idiot but you dont sound like you own any of these devices and learn english that post is bad even as second language standards

» Icon preview and dolby digital

Why do none of the video downloads from the playstation network have animated icons (the 15 second clips). The videos ive transfered from my psp have these.

ive discovered you can add them afterwards, by playing the video, pressing triangle and selecting icon preview. Question is why doesnt this happen automatically when you download the clip?

Also why dont these videos have 5 or 7 channel sound tracks. They all seem to just be 2 channel. Whats the point in watching blue ray previews with a digital soundtrack?

Finally id like to be able to organise videos etc in folders.

   Re: Skyker (Unregistered) - 2007-06-27
 » well

if the video clip icon was done for you it might not be in the right place, and just show blankness. you would also have more trouble finding the clip instead of the icon if it was new (agree we need folders) the sound would just make the downloadable files so much bigger.

 » *sigh*

I wish sony would make a REAL update. I'm tired of having to leave my game to look at the xmb, and to chat. They should also let me play my music, and check on my downloading games while I'm in a game. But instead they give an updte on a few vid formats and ps2 title compatibility? BS
Sony, you should let the ps3 do ALL the things that the fake update before listed. If they do that, it'll definately be one of the better systmes, IMO

In time it'll fall together. Look Home is already some of it possible.

 » hmm

they could in theory release everything at once, and make everyone happy, but then people would stay on a certain firmware, and that would make it easier to hack. by drip feeding us updates they keep us updating and keep the hackers at bay (for now at least)
