PlayStation 3 - Image 1

Developer Corey David of Psyonix studios let it loose in a forum post that PlayStation 3 Firmware v2.7.0 would come later this month. He says that this update "contain(s) lots of fun new fixes" although he didn't go into the specifics. Here's his forum post:

Hey Guys

I’ve been working with Sony trying to reproduce and solve the PSN sign-out issues some of you report.

Any info you can generate will be really helpful. Sony mentioned a bug they fixed with the next system software update (2.70) that might resolve these issues, but we have to narrow it down and verify it’s the same problem to be sure it’s that and not something we need to fix on our end.

IIRC it will drop later this month. And contain lots of fun new fixes. I’m excited about this one, lots of new stuff. :)

Though, I dont think I can mention any of them just yet.

-Psyonix-Corey

Details have been revealed, however, by a member of the GameTrailers forums, claiming to be in Sony R&D. According to the information he revealed, the firmware update will contain improvements to your Friends List, such as voice messaging support and Home Intergration, as well as drastic improvements for the loading time of In-Game XMB.

If all this is legit, then it would appear that Sony is really stepping up and adding more value to their console. So far, no confirmation has been made by Sony on the release of this firmware update or on the updates that will come with it. Keep checking back with us 'cause we'll be keeping you posted on any info that may come out in the following days.

For details, you can find them in the previous coverage of the rumor.

If all of this is true, I can't freaking wait...
And it'll be even better if it really is this month!

   Re: xche78x - 2009-03-10
 » dear sony

how about fixing the sync issues of my ps3 with my benq G2400W lcd monitor.
i bought my ps3 hoping it will work with my old mitsubishi rdt 17" 1280x1024 lcd, but no coz it needs to be HDCP compliant.
so i upgraded to the benq, works perfect at start but when the damn 2.5 2.6 firmwares was forced to be upgraded to the ps3 it screwed.
moving from XMB to game renders my monitor Flickering for seconds to few minutes.
it very annoying to wait seconds to minutes when changing inputs hdmi to dvi and vice versa.
this was not apparent on older firmwares. sucks that i cant roll back, and even if i can i will lose psn access and newer games wont work which would suck more.
hopefully newer firmware update to solve such problems, its similar to the one popular mechanics solved by reconnecting the cable.
and no i wont succumb to such technique which could damage the hdmi port on my ps3 or monitor.

when are they gonna put in the ability play your own music during gameplay, im tired of waiting.

   Re: RavenSPe - 2009-03-09
 » Games already support this

it's up to the developer to implement it.

   Re: chessboxer - 2009-03-09
 » @ Shazman1984

RavenSPe is correct, but to compound the issue, Sony cannot make it mandatory because that would infringe a patent owned by Microsoft which covers the ability to play a custom soundtrack on a console for any game played on the console.

   Re: StingBlah - 2009-03-09
 » pick up warhawk

it already has that feature, and I use it ALL the time.

   Re: Fujin - 2009-03-09

Street Fighter 4 and Killzone 2 have this feature as well.

   Re: emcp - 2009-03-09
 » mmm

well if its as dumbed down as you say,

enable in-game xmb for everygame but one
lol

doubt its that dumbed down, i hate bastards like this, who simply eliminate all competition in this manner over something so general

   Re: hush404 - 2009-03-09
 » Hehehe

Shaz is so far behind! It's been an option for devs for a long time now, if the dev doesn't want to implement it then it's not available but it's still there. There's a number of games that use it.

 » Internet Radio?

I'm still waiting for internet radio support.

I want to be able to turn on the PS3, select a radio station and let it play all day long. What kind of a multimedia device is that, without internet radio?

   Re: GUNBEHINDTHESUN - 2009-03-09
 » That would be great!

Also I wish they would make their prices for movie downloads cheaper or implement a flat monthly rate or something. I have yet to download any of their Playstation store movies because they charge an arm and a leg just for standard definition movies and tv episodes that you can't even play on other devices. For the price of a few rentals, I can get a crap load more movies monthly through Netflix and they come with all the special features too. It's laughable and disgusting to see them charge $2.00 for a freaking 20 minute tv episode. Are they serious?

   Re: JoeBears - 2009-03-09
 » Internet Radio

I use Internet radio all the time on my PS3. Just use the browser, since the improved flash support, sites like Pandora.com, Aol Radio and AccuRadio work great!

 » damn what the hell

is an *****ing gaming device and dont worry this feature will come out soon or later and if u cant wait go use a damn computer or buy a *****ing radio or just go and ***** ur self

» Details have been revealed, however, by a member of the GameTrailers forums, claiming to be in Sony R&D.

That list was disproven due to some physical impossibilities.

In game web browser is not possible unless the game sets RAM aside for it, in which case the game supports the feature already.

   Re: chessboxer - 2009-03-09
 » In-game

browser is possible and SCE are working on it but it's a bit buggy in most games at the moment. If these issues can be resolved then it will be in a future update.

   Re: GUNBEHINDTHESUN - 2009-03-09
» I could see it working

if they speed up the XMB like they say. Also I think some games support this already but it's limited.

   Re: Stealth! - 2009-03-09
 » Techni is right though

This isn't true. I mean When has Sony ever released something that sounds this good?
At any rate, I doubt we'll see this in one big package. Maybe smaller updates, who knows though. But I doubt this is true.

I personally don't give a crap about in game web browser. If i'm playing a game, I want to be focus on the game. Sony should stop adding ridiculous features most people don't want. Instead they should focus on in game voice chat and all that jazz 360 has.

   Re: jac_the_ripper - 2009-03-09
 » @ Stealth!

this update, it does have the in game voice chat feature

   Re: Techni - 2009-03-09
 » in-game browser is possible

No it's not, I already told you why.

   Re: Silver-Tiger - 2009-03-09
 » ....

And who says that? You? Like you would exactly know how a PS3 works....

   Re: chessboxer - 2009-03-09
 » @ Techni

It is possible, it is being tested at this moment in time and SCEA have it working BUT it is buggy in most games, possibly due to the game not setting aside RAM as you said, possibly due to other reasons - I don't know, but I do know it is being worked on.

   Re: emcp - 2009-03-09
 » mm

killzone supports in-game web browser,

honestly dont comment such a ridiculous comment,
its possible its definately possible, the ps3 has a small amount of ram, but compared to other mobile devices it kicks ass, and they are able to view websites

theyre probably be moving ram into another memory type, one which doesnt require fast access, as the game wont be playable and beable to browse the internet

aslo internet is extremely helpful, walkthroughs will be a lot easier now, vids of hidden package etc (i hate that ***** in games, but i must get the 100%)

   Re: Volomon - 2009-03-09
 » Ingame XMB Internet

Actually Sony has already commented that this is indeed a future thing that will be added.

So I don't question this one as fact.

I'm actually not sure what end your pulling this ram stuff out of since most likely ingame xmb will be supported by gameOS ram already set aside for the system.

Also as with all software...as it is optimized it eats up less ram freeing it up for other things to be added.

 » yea.

i think the web browser in game is possible but it wouldnt be that great killzone 2 proves that cuz it runs out of memory fast

Sounds like you don't know anything about computer hardware.

 » in-game web browsing...

im not to sure on it either, id like to see the regular web browser working in tip top shape 1st. but on a side note i played FFXI on my ps2, but the ppl that played it on their PC's had something similar to this, where u can browse the web and keep track of stats while u were playing. so i can see something similar to that happening. but the ppl that used it in FFXI used it for negative things not positive.

   Re: GUNBEHINDTHESUN - 2009-03-09

I wish Sony would make the browser work better with more options. Better flash support and allow cut and paste options would be the bomb!

» ingame browser or anything else is possible

The main limitation to xmb things you can do ingame are to do with
1) available cpu
2) available memory.

thus far the ingame xmb appears to make do with what the game has left over. That is the game continues to run, possibly pausing gameplay, but t

» Millionth person who doesn't know what he's talking about.

Actually it runs off of system os ram. It doesn't run off of what the game has left. It has nothing to do with the game. Because Ingame XMB didn't exist for a lot of game and if you put one in you get the XMB still.
   by dvdchas - 2009-03-09
 » ...continued

but the game engine is still running underneath.

Thus far the ingame xmb appears to make use of the ram and cpu left over. or ram that is reserved for the os.

To allow the web browser or other resource hungry app, all that is required is for the games memory to be paged out to disk. abit like you laptop does when you put it in standby.

Now this wouldn't be immediate, i don't know how long it would take to page a gig or even half a gig of ream to disk. but were talking 10-30 secs which is a lot quicker than quiting a game and then restarting it waiting for all those loading screens and game/studio banners to be cycled through.

maybe game launching from home will work a similar way.

Cant wait! Yet a few more new FREE features for us PS3 owners, unlike the 360 owners. But dont worry Xbots, u still got ur 2.1.0.5.6.7.3.4.6.3 version coming out soon right? Microsoft even manages to make version numbers difficult.

I know about the sign in problem. My PS3 will sign into PSN when I turn it on and a few minutes later it will say:

There is a problem connecting to PSN, you have been signed out.

Based on th rumoured list about the changes in this firmware, something finally rings true.

Regarding the official "Trophy Cards" coming out on the SCEE website.

Apparantly the asthetics of the "Profile Card" was going to be changed to better suite the playstation store (for some reason) now if you look at the "Trophy Cards" that will be released later this week over at uk.playstation.com this definatly seems to be the case.

I'm waiting for on-the-fly user switching, or maybe even just savegame user switching for when there are more than one person playing a single player game (i.e. NFS Undercover) and dont want to have to keep bloody quitting the game to access the other users save!!!
