Sony PS3 - Image 1The Sony PlayStation 3 2.10 Firmware update has caused quite a stir lately with the stuff that it's bringing to the table. Reactions have been varied to say the least, with the homebrew development community taking a hit.

A group of independent developers over at PS2Dev is claiming that the Sony PS3 Firmware 2.10 update blocks the RSX access hack done via Linux. No further information was given, though several implications are easy to predict if it's true.

Mainly, homebrew development for the platform using 3D animations will be halted in updated systems. This is because the Linux hack granted access to the Sony PS3's GPU for tinkering. With that access point disabled, projects will have to be put on hold if there are any existing at the moment.

If you're a supporter of homebrew for the Sony PS3, you may want to think again before updating to firmware 2.10. If not, go right ahead and enjoy. We'll update you regarding this topic in a few.

For the record, I support homebrew, but I want the PS3 to do well. Even if custom firmware was available, I would have a tough time deciding whether or not to appy it.

How does having a custom firmware installed hinder sony?

@Payka

It depends on the customs firmware. If the homebrew allows people to play games for free that they would normally purchase, (PS1,PS2, and possibly PS3 sometime in the future) Sony will lose money. The developers will also be less likely to spend the money needed to produce a quality game if they know people will steal the game rather than buy it and support development of the next one. Homebrew is great until is slows or stops the growth of good games for the legit users.

You must have some bad connection if you have NAT type 3. I have 2 I think cause im not connected directly to the modem (I use wireless connection).

Go to your routers settings and make a static IP address (google it) and manually set up your ps3's IP address and it should be Nat 2 i had that problems for about a month or 2 after i purchased it.

Seems Sony doesn't want the PS3 being hacked, i can't blamed them. I see more improvements on this feature to make the PS3 hack free in the future. Good job Sony keep up the good work.

I don't support hacking in anyway especially this machine. But then again its your choice to update the firmware so the choice is yours really.
