PS3 XMB - Image 1Originally posted 17 June, 2008 at 06:54PM.

PlayStation Network director of operations Eric Lempel has posted an exciting item on the PlayStation Blogs. He has announced that the PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.36 update is coming soon and he dropped some confirmations about the much-anticipated Firmware 2.40.

Lempel wasn't quite clear on what exactly Firmware 2.36 does, but he did mention that it stabilizes software performance for some select PS3 titles. What he had to say next, however, was a lot more exciting. It reads:

We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.

Sounds awesome. The good times for the PS3 just keep on rolling these days. We'll give you more updates as they come, so stick around.

Thanks to R7i1c3K and gtxboyracer for the tip!

Looks like the Firmware update really has arrived. News are starting to trickle in of users who have finished downloading Firmware 2.36 on the PS3. Ray Trueblood has sent us a tip via email saying that he completed his download at around 10:40PM.

So far, he says that the update was probably just a patch for some PS3 title, or even just a preparatory one for the next update, which is supposed to be the big one. He came to this conclusion after not seeing any significant visual changes.

We suggest you do check your units now to see if it's been dropped in your area.  Keep it posted here for more updates (and you can bet there'll be more); we'll be sure to bring them to you.

Thanks Ray Trueblood!

QJ.Net Staff, i sent in the Tip to you guys, but see no mention of my name (gtxboyracer)..what gives?

   Re: GW2 - 2008-06-17
» maybe he found out before your tip

duh. some bloggers dont even look at the tips. its ok. noone cares if you found it.

oh and i was right, they are releasing another firmware before 2.4 :)

Yeah well its funny this article was posted about 5 minutes after i submitted the tip..

b*stard won't even reply to me..c'mon Glen D

 » Thank you

Thanks for the credit..

   Re: GW2 - 2008-06-17
 » you dont deserve it

ill bet he didnt look at your tip, he found it himself, then you call him a bastard! your ungrateful for what these guys do for us.

Re: Mabie A. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2008-06-17
» thanks and keep sending those tips in

chill down, boys. :)

we really do try our best to put in the credits for tips on time. but sometimes, the article gets put up before the tip is sent in, or before the tip is seen.

you have to understand that there is a strict process we follow when writing our articles, so we can make sure you get your time's worth when visiting our site.

so sometimes, it really does happen that we fail to give proper thanks upon original posting of the article because we don't catch the tips all at once, but rest assured we do update them as soon as we can.

for example, in gtxboyracer's case, he says the article was posted about five minutes after the tip was submitted. on the qj plane however, that means that the article was ALREADY written and was just going through the editing and approval process. that's what was most likely happening with the article when he sent in the tip and so it wasn't inserted right then and there.

anyhoo... that's all water under the bridge now. so there's no need argue and throw water bottles in rage, now. ;P

but really, we'd like to thank you guys for sending us your tips. we assure you we're really trying our best, and you will be getting that credit you do deserve.

although sometimes it does take a little patience. :)

Ok i understand.. i just thought since when i submitted the tip, it was like 3-4 hours after the news had come out; so i thought that no-body knew here about it.

 » So..

I guess we can rule out the update being this month. I think it'll be next month around E3. But its nice to finally hear it from THE source instead of some poorly taken videos and rumors. Your right, the good times for the ps3 just keep rolling =].

   Re: FreePlay - 2008-06-18
 » I wouldn't rule it out.

At this point 2.40 is FINISHED... it's just waiting on server-side fixes from Sony. The trophies were originally going to be included in Home, but Sony will be throwing us a bone to keep us interested by separating the trophies out. As a result, they've encountered several problems with the server since trophies became their own beast... but like I said, the firmware itself is done.

I've been told we shouldn't expect to wait until July...

   Re: RommelTJ - 2008-06-18
 » June 21st?

Isn't June 21st the date they said?

   Re: FreePlay - 2008-06-18
 » No.

There is no official release date.
   by NarooN - 2008-06-17
 » well, there you go.

An official confirmation for all of the skeptics and pessimists.

We won't get 2.40 this month, that's for sure. Why release 2.36 and then release 2.40 when they could just incorporate the features of 2.36 into 2.40 and release it this thursday?

FTL... >_>

Just like Sony. Making us wait 50 extra years for no reason.

   Re: na2rul - 2008-06-17
 » hmm

yes a bit disappointing. im sure it will all pull through eventually. They got so much to push out - in game functions must be a touch challenge, then they got home, another big challenge, without charging.

does anyone know if this fixes gta4 freeze?

   Re: Vanaheimx - 2008-06-17
 » No.

Obviously not, seeing as the only way to fix GTA IV freezing is to send your PS3 in to get replaced. This comes from a guy who is sitting here right now waiting 7-10 business days for his PS3. It's free, so if your GTA is freezing, give Sony's Consumer hotline a call to replace your system.

I finished downloading. This does nothing. Maybe if I had GTA4 or some other glitchy game.

i find it really funny that i have a 60GB UK launch PS3, and yet i have had no problems at all with GTA 4, or any other game for that matter..

So, dont say GTA 4 is glithcy, unless i have some kind of ultimate none crashing PS3?

   Re: RommelTJ - 2008-06-18
 » What?

I don't even own the game, so I'm just going with the rumors.

I have a US launch PS3, also 60GB.

Why are you so protective of your videogames? lol

 » Downloaded, and waiting...

I just downloaded 2.36, and I am anxiously waiting for 2.40! I hope it hits soon!

Thank God, most of the newer games will have D3 support (Bad Company, Haze, Nascar '09), maybe they will have trophy support as well!

   Re: mupet0000 - 2008-06-18
 » Too bad

Its too bad that haze and nascar are both terrible games, nascar looks like a ps2 game while being bad at gameplay, and haze also looks like a ps2 game while having terrible voice acting and a.i throughout.

How this article appears in the Top 10 Quick Jump list is REALLY misleading lol

"*UPDATE* PS3 Firmware 2.36 has hit, trophies and in-game XMB confirmed..."

Damn it haha

@ D-0-A
The update wouldn't be to integrate rumble or trophie support into games. Only the developers for the game itself can do that.

   Re: Vanaheimx - 2008-06-17
 » Ha ha.

It got me too actually. I don't even have my PS3 here with me; I'm waiting for my PS3 to get back from Sony, but I almost ran to the empty spot in my entertainment system to start my PS3 up so I could enjoy trophies. Then I realized I didn't have my PS3... and then I thought to read the article.

» UPDATE* PS3 Firmware 2.36 has hit, trophies and in-game XMB confirmed...

This really does look like 2.36 has the 2.40 features, i would rename the article to prevent people being mislead.

Anyone got any ideas of when the 2.40 update is coming?
It was rumoured to be just before MGS4, but that fell flat.

   by CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2008-06-18
 » FW 2.40

I don't mean to sound like an ass or anything but I have concerns about in game XMB access. I hope that we don't start seeing a lot of glitches and freezing issues with it do to a high amount of system resources needed to pull this off. A lot of PS3 games take advantage of most of the system memory seeing that many games show a lot of detailed things moving extremely fast and I can imagine already that when high amount of resources are used and then someone decides to access the XMB, there occasionally might be issues of freezing or crashing. I hope i'm wrong though.

   Re: darkjonny - 2008-06-18

Thats probably why weve waited so long for it, sony want to make sure that doesnt happen...
At least i hope so!

   Re: eambo - 2008-06-18
 » Xbox 360...

Xbox360 has had this feature for a while and for the most part it simply pauses the game to get around it. Pausing the game + very little resources used, not dissimilar from simply quitting a game at the moment. Only problem I see is with online games because most dont pause...

   Re: urherenow - 2008-06-18

"Xbox360 has had this feature for a while"

No, it hasn't. Unless you can load the entire dashboard while in a game, you're wrong.

Don't see much new here. Downloaded it last night. It's pretty much just a patch for some random game.

2.40 next week?

» I wonder if all the complains have finished now.

I hope people will stop complaining. I just don't understand that why they buy a Ps3 when they KNOW it doesn't have In-Game XMB and then they complain. If they didn't know they should AT LEAST do SOME research. I mean this machine is freaking $499/$399 in my country, it's not just a machine it's processor has been used in many supercomputer, they should at least get to know what they are buying.. :P

Really, it's just common sense to check what ur buying.. I just don't get it...

both ps3 and psp updates were garbage. 2.36? what was the point? 4.00? make google your homepage and there you go. don't get me wrong. i own both and love them but there was too much hype over nothing.

Jesus.

   Re: NarooN - 2008-06-19
 » well..

Where do you guys THINK most of the updates came from? They go on the forums and such and read a lot of the replies, even have polls sometimes. They listen. Then they incorporate it into a later release.

It just takes them longer because they beta test the ***** out of everything.
   by jwydell - 2008-06-19
 » relax everyone.

i'm not hating on sony. i said i own and love both products. i was right though. what was the point?
you guys are right. the hype is not sony's fault. its ours for expecting too much. however sony did claim the psp update would be awesome.
