PS3 firmware 2.40 to really include in-game XMB? - Image 1

Originally posted 2008-05-29, 21:39

Jim Cordeira of Gaming Age says that they've received word that Sony's Firmware 2.40 for the PlayStation 3 is "the real deal" and will be arriving real soon. Features confirmed to them by their source includes in-game communication, a universal friends list, and in-game access to music tracks.

We've also heard word from Videogaming247 (external link) that they too have been notified by an unnamed source that Sony's PlayStation Firmware 2.40 will sport in-game XMB, trophy support, and in-game XMB access to play your own music. Mere coincidence?

We would have settled at that, but then developers from Criterion Games corroborated in-game music features in the PlayStation 3 version of Burnout Paradise. While the Cagney update is under development, and therefore also "coming soon," the additional feature it includes is exclusive to the PS3 version. It says a lot, doesn't it?

Even folks at NeoGAF has reason to believe that Firmware 2.40 will sport more features than was previously speculated. While we aren't going to say that these details are officially confirmed, there's a lot of smoke billowing from outside sources. And where there's smoke...

*UPDATE*: Let's try this again: "PS3 Firmware 2.40 to really include in-game XMB?"

Judging from the recent video, PS3 Firmware 2.40 most probably will. Oh and we know - that's 2K Games' BioShock that the unseen player resumed from the Xross Media Bar's Game menu. Since BioShock is really coming to PS3, feel free to believe that in-game XMB access is coming, too.

Thanks to QJ.NET reader duy817 for the tip.

 » REALLLLSSEEEEE DATEEEE +^D

Hey guys and girls, in a follow up to all my other reports from my exclusive insider on 2.40, I have some small news on 2.40. You may have heard all the rumors about 2.40 arriving this month, with some even as going as far as stating a release on June 10th. Well it gives me great pleasure to confirm this date from my insider who says that right now, Sony has set the current firmware release date for 06/10/08. However he did put great emphasis that Sony could still possibly bring the update forward as well as back however it is very likely it will arrive on that exact day which happens to be a Tuesday. I hope that answers some questions and on a final note, when i did talk to him about the videos spreading like wildfire on the internet of 2.40 in action, he said they are legit.

The Japanese think its rude to talk to someone while they are playing a game and its rude to message people while playing games, hence why the PS3 and the Wii lack unified Voice Chat and buddy lists.

the xbox has all processors working together from the dashboard 2 being in a game.
The ps3 has 1 processor dedicated just 4 XMB(waste of memory) and the others do the rest.

Im guessing the patch will make the processors work together like the xbox, so the in game stuff above will work.
plus the spare memory could be used 4 better graphics/loading in the future

 » nuffsaid noclue

@nuffsaid: I don't think you understand the Cell architecture. If it were even possible for them to change the low-level architecture of the CPUs data paths via a software patch, it would totally hose those games engineered properly on the PS3 platform. The multi-core Cell architecture is NOT the crude 'throw more horses at it' concept as the 360's triple-core. The Cell design is akin to the idea that the primary core is the Command-in-Chief and the other 7 used cores are the Generals of the Armed Forces, each assigned to a specific task (such as audio, AI, shaders, etc). If they were suddenly told to operate on an equal playing field, I would imagine you'd suddenly have a shload of broken games. So, I would think that they either been working to reduce the memory footprint of the XMB and processor priority, or that of the OS, in order to squeak out the extra threads needed to incorporate something that wasn't there to begin with. Of course, there's also the other perfectly logical conclusion that perhaps they always planned it from the start, and never let devs use up a 'hidden' PS3 Cell resource just for the 'rainy day' purpose like this.

If you are sooo in love with your 360, why do you still have to creep around the PS3 section?

   Re: platon - 2008-05-30
 » why?

Just downgrade when the hacking firmware pops. There is already downgrade options, and if we think about the psp, you can ALWAYS downgrade, it's gonn abe the same on the ps3.

Finally, I don't think we'll see a cracked firmware before mid 2k9 (that launches ISO I mean), and the games will auto-updates your firmware, so you should have waited before buying a ps3 then.

PS: I find it wierd to wait for cheap stuff when you pay per month on x360 :S. You should have bought only one console and support it with games instead. Anyway in a year or so the craked firmware will pop. The x360 is always hackable, like the wii.

   Re: Kingofdaberbz - 2008-05-30
 » @Platon

I rather wait for several reasons. We already can run a partial debug on ps3, so it won't be long before the ps3 can run a full. Hopefully by the end of June we'll have "something." There will most likely be a downgrader, but for which firmware? How long would it take for a 2.4 downgrader? Oh, and I bought my ps3 because someone sold me me a 80gb ps3 for $200 with two game, I couldn't pass on that.

Pay? I don't pay for anything. I get XBL for free(codes) One console? Why? I buy multiple consoles because of exclusives. I want Ninja Gaiden 2, Halo, Gears 2, Infinite Undiscovery, Alan Wake, Banjo, Fable 2,etc. There's also a few ps3 exclusives I like too, God Of War being my favorite franchise. I have a hacked Wii, but I probably won't hack my 360, I don't want to be banned.

But I don't care if Sony or Nintendo ban me since I don't like their online or have any friends with those consoles.

» didn't they already tell you to get lost?

@berbz, seriously what the hell are you doing spreading your xbox fanboynism. just because you own both doesnt mean your not one. and keeping it at a lower firmware? like updating would do any harm. theres no custom firmware coming out anytime soon! mind as well chuck it out the window and use that as a reason why you don't like ps3 in the first place.

   Re: 93pauott - 2008-05-30
 » keith k

you can pause multiplayer, you will be disconnected or just stopping in your position (letting the other guys killing you) until you unpause it.

   Re: Keith K - 2008-05-30
 » Not really, no

Disconnecting is not an option. Period.

Yes you can have it pause your character as it does in Warhawk, or most other games, but the game will still be running in the background, most likely visible. Will it make a difference in the actual gameplay while not using the XMB? Hopefully not..

But you can't disregard them as mutually exclusive. Games cannot be affected by the implementation of In-Game XMB, or its a failure.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-05-30
 » Actually no fatez

I bet it'll be the opposite. The XMB will be a little slower when you pull it up in the game. The frame rate wont drop. If you notice, the few games that actually HAVE the in-game XMB feature do exactly what I said.

So dissconnection and lag wont happen.

But one thing.. Nuh duh it'll pause the game! What do you expect to walk around while typing a message to a friend or picking your music??? Be smart peoples..

   Re: 93pauott - 2008-05-31

call of duty 4 kicks you when your idle (you don't touch your controller for a while). Thats not really "disconnecting", and that'll happen weather you pause the game or not.

   by RexNox - 2008-05-30
 » Here's to hoping...

@whoitmayconcern: The Cell is designed to take in multiple levels of information at once. I think this is why some of the games don't run at @720p instead they are saving some of the memory to allow for other information...like XMB or a Home connection.

I-XMB shouldn't be a problem for most people. However, the people who are freezing are probably so because they are maxing out on all their resources, that is, wireless broadband, downloading, small harddrive 60 or lower with less than 25% of it available, playing a RAM-heavy game, stuffed into a cabinet without the ever being cleaned. In other words, it's ready to smoke. And, I mean these factors don't help, it still could lag or freeze at any time, because the Cell isn't designed like other computers.

If I understand the Cell correctly, think of it as a choir singing a 6-part song. Each part has a director, and they all can hand information to the singers independently and even dip into a vocal stockpile when they want to. Now, imagine that this 6-part song is song by two people. So, you have six directors giving information to two people at the speed of light and/or sound.

Well, what happens when one of those people sings the wrong note, but was giving the right information? Bug...

Or, what if there are too many words for the person to sing? Lag...

What if the audience just expects their to be more words? Then, what?

   by platon - 2008-05-30
 » I don't think so

Maybe for the music stuff. But the trophee support is in "home" so it's gonna be a long time before we have that. And for the in-game XMB, sony would brag about that instead of making a little supprise, I'd say. Anyway, they said they had no plans for in-game XMB this year, wich mean I would be really supprised, and happy, if the 2.4 have it, unless the 2.4 pops in more than 3 months, then it would just be normal.

   Re: Eclipze_ - 2008-05-30
 » ?

They never said "they had no plans for in-game XMB this year". I remember on the PSblog they actually said their working to get it out this year. So complete opposite right there.

But for the trohpy thing, theres supposed to be a 2D trohpy system put into the XMB. They did say that every feature in Home would be available to those who don't want to use Home. So I wouldn't be too suprised to see it.

Anyways I hope in-game XMB does come with this next update, would be perfect to finally answer messages in game and hopefully cross chat on the mic with people in different games.

 » ITS TRUE.

I don't care if you think these are useless features (If you do, you're either anti-social or don't deserve your PS3) but they're coming. SCEA and SCEE confirmed this long ago in various ads and other statements. There's no reason to think it's untrue because fans have been requesting these things for a very long time, and Sony has been reading their message boards ever since they were up.

Where do you think the custom themes came from? Sony did it because they saw how popular it was on the PSP from the Custom Firmware front, so they made custom themes possible for everyone and then put it on PS3. Sony DOES listen to their fans, and a lot of the firmware updates we've been getting in the past are mostly comprised of what the fans want.

Log in and log out should be on the XMB. It makes sense because what if you get disconnected during a single player game and you want to still talk to your friend? You just sign in like normal ^_^.

One thing I didn't see in the video was the web browser.. But if you have better eyes then me, I guess theres just some Icons that don't work. I bet when you try and click on it it'll say "Can't use this feature while in game" or something like that.

I hope this video is true because I'm really looking forward to these features. And its about damn time they put that little clock there lol.
