PS3 Firmware 2.60: extras revealed - Image 1Today's PlayStation 3 firmware update held a couple of other features besides DivX 3.11 support and guest access to the PlayStation Store, if rumors are to be believed.

This list comes from PlayStation LifeStyle, who got it from one of their sources:
  • Safe Mode
  • Blu-Ray Disc Theme Support
  • HDD Data can be accessed and deleted in-game
  • 3-D Secure Support
  • Improved System Stability
Sounds like technical stuff I don't care about. Which would probably explain why they didn't put it in the original press release for the update. I'm wondering what they mean by Blu-ray disc theme support though. Sony hasn't officially confirmed this new info though. Anyone know if these are legit?

 » that photo thing sux

I cant access my SD card from that photo gallery or am i doing somthing wrong? like i can copy all the pics from it to my hdd but thats stupid, I dont want to waste all that time, for a temporary thing

   Re: CamHostage - 2009-01-21
 » Local photos only

Pictures supported in the new photo app are only those stored on the PS3 itself. Also doesn't work with DNLA networked media. Bad move for Sony, it's a fantastic app (granted one that only certain people will care about) but most who would use it would stick in their camera card so what's the point? Hopefully the app will get a patch to become more functional.

 » 3.11?

divx 3.11 support ?! seriously, who in the world would use such and old codec?

somebody, tell me it's a joke, or a version typo.

   Re: Stario001 - 2009-01-21
» hows this for a joke?

They removed Backward Compatibility for the PS2 so they can add backward compatibility for old video codecs, next update will have WMV 5 codec set. XD

 » Blu-Ray Disc Theme Support

not sure if this is the same, but on my pineapple express blu-ray.
under game it has a "theme" which is just a wallpaper.

i have yet to download this update but i wonder if it will add more to that "theme"

"HDD Data can be accessed and deleted in-game" huh? what does this even mean? i could access stuff before (well see it at least) can i actually view photos/videos/ PLAY MUSIC ?! :O
i don't understand

   Re: psychoz69 - 2009-01-21
 » not sure but

i think they mean that you could access the system folder on the xmb bar when your playing a game, because if you want to delete a file of a game it prompts you to get out of the game to do that option.

sry....I try some other games and it only worked with motorstorm. don't know if it has something to do with the update......

   Re: sony_player - 2009-01-21
 » Motorstorm

Motorstorm 2 has always been capable of ingame music, not sure about the first one though

   Re: Justingraziano - 2009-01-21
 » Liar

No it doesnt. I just tried with MotorStorm 1, it does not work.

   Re: popmchnex - 2009-01-21
 » Since in-game xmb...

You've been able to have a custom soundtrack in select games ever since in-game xmb update.

   Re: 93pauott - 2009-01-21
 » LOL

it's a game feature!

   Re: saldude2 - 2009-01-22
 » mmm

But the xbox 360 can play music while playing a game (sad)

   Re: Silver-Tiger - 2009-01-22
 » That's because...

Micro$oft has a patent on in-game music. The PS3 could handle in-game music without problems, but M§ won't them integrate it.

   Re: blazekingeking - 2009-01-22
 » silver-tiger

What MS patented wasn't in-game music, but the mandatory support
of in-game music on all titles. That's why Sony leaves it to the devs and it's the only way to get around it; they just enabled it to be used in a FW update.

 » thx

I'm going to check this out and see if I have similar results! I'll let everyone know as well. Thanks skate4life!

   Re: Twenty-Se7en - 2009-01-21
 » So...

I jumped into the skate 2 demo and went into party mode. I didn't see any skipping and I played for about 6 minutes... if you have played the skate 2 demo before you may have noticed some skipping in that time - I did.

Anyone else see this change?

» HDD access and ability to delete data?

I think it means that you can like delete messages, photos, etc. while playing a game. Before you could browse the XMB and see your music, but you couldn't delete them...

   by kon_e3 - 2009-01-21
 » they should bring back

the ability to play a vid in the background like it used to be, now it automatically pauses wen i go to xmb

   Re: Stario001 - 2009-01-21
» i want this feature too

i think you still can watch videos playback on the xmb but only if those are online videos and you're watching them in the internet browser, i'm not sure if blu-ray and dvd videos still play in the background or not.

   Re: Justingraziano - 2009-01-21
 » ...

There should be a setting to choose in the menu. That would make everyone happy!
   by PS3 OUTSIDER - 2009-01-21
 » whats new guys ?

they've done this with every update i can remember not tell us what were fully getting the likelihood is there's a lot of other changes they've made we haven't even noticed

   by Rakeen - 2009-01-21
 » BD THEME

So for example if it was the Dark Knight once we start the movie and we go into the Special Features on the disc there will be a Playstation 3 Theme opition and when you click on it, it will ask you if you want to download the theme to your PS3 & when you click yes it download’s and installs the theme for you & even chooses the theme for you so once you are finished watching the movie when you go back to the XMB it will have that theme already applied.

 » Is that

Is that a question or a comment?
   by DVD_Sandwich - 2009-01-22
 » delete during playback...

I've just noticed you can now delete music while playing music (obviously not deleting what you are currently playing)
Previously, the music would stop when you select and delete something else.

 » Excellent *evil genius face*

HDD access support in games mean that someone *cough* Paradox *cough* will probably figure out some way to access the internal HDD for doing wicked things. Don't expect to see anything right now though since nobody has really figured out how to poke around in there but still, this extended support means it might be possible to find a new exploit. Here's to high hopes.

BTW, hey i'm not supporting piracy. I strongly believe that you should support your console by BUYING games for it. I just believe you should be able to develop for the system as long as it's within tolerance and respect for the people who worked very hard to make the console that we all love. Emulators of course would be fantastic. I'm not bothering with running Linux on my system. I tried this once and it was so slow that it made my eyes bleed. Such a waste of a powerful console to lock up the RSX chip and the other SPU's. Why Sony? Why?
