PS3 Firmware 2.53 - Image 1

Okay, so their "tomorrow" actually meant a full week, but at least the firmware update's here now. That's right, Sony's PS3 Firmware v2.53 Update has landed, and ever so stealthily, as usual, and it's got more than just the previously announced Adobe Flash Player support.

Eric Lempel has posted an update on the PlayStation Blog just earlier, announcing a couple more things you'll get to enjoy:
  • Full-screen mode capability
  • Live movie (using RTMP format) playability
So do check your PS3s for the update now, and thanks to Cloudx for the quick tip.

Is it just me? or is this update downloading eexxttreemmeellyyy slllloooww.....

   Re: ValiX - 2008-12-01
 » Its not just you.

Its downloading very slow for me as well.

I really wish Sony would stop forcing us to download these minor releases. Why dont they save all these small things for a bigger update? Say, 2.60? Its one thing to keep releasing updates (a good thing mind you), but to force us to download the small ones just so we can access PSN is ridiculous.

   Re: Esaar - 2008-12-01
 » God...

Have some *****ing patience kid. Go out and maybe look at the sun or something. The download will finish in a few minutes.

   Re: Vexx0 - 2008-12-01
 » OK...

First of all, its night time in the good ol' USA. and the download took over a half hour. A download that was really unnecessary.

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-12-02
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Well put Vexx0. In the begining Sony never forced us to update each and every time. Only on major updates.

This update is worthless to me. Total waste of time.

 » ugh..

i wish they would atleast try and combat the NXE..i mean it realy blows the xmb out of the water. Sony does put out all these updates but they realy dont do much features wise. I personally want to know why the ps3 is the most powerful system right now...but cant support in game chat..never mind parties, and i dont think they'll ever let you play your own music in games...but hey o well...thas y i have both consoles

   Re: SikWitThiz - 2008-12-01
 » Well.....

Did you know that M$ patent a few of those features so no other company "Competition" would be able to top feature but making it better. Sony needs to come up with another way to introduce all of those features without it infringing on those BS!!! patents. As you have seen over the last few years. Companies that don't make much money love suing larger companies for using something that they claim to have patent for.

That update only took me 5 - 7 minutes. Did you not think there would probably be a shiznit load of people trying to get this update at the same time as you? That could have been ya'll issue. IMO I like the current XMB. Yeah it could be improved on but I like that I can use my own theme and not be stuck with some limited theme or pay somebody $$$$ for some *****ty one.

   Re: Techni - 2008-12-01
» i wish they would atleast try and combat the NXE.

They did, it's called Home.

The XMB is already so user friendly and expandable it doesn't need redoing. 360s UI was so cluttered and obfuscated even NXE needs works. Look at how easy it is to copy save games on PS3 versus 360

   Re: NarooN - 2008-12-02
 » no.

Before I get bashed, let me say something: My bro has a 360 Elite literally one room away from me, and I've tampered with the NXE and it's not really anything too special. Sure, it was hyped up to hell but it's nothing special at all. It's basically just a new version of the dashboard with creatable cartoon characters.

Home looked epic before I actually got into the beta. I've been in the beta for about 3-4 months now and without breaking the NDA, it's a complete borefest, even with friends on board. We can't even do half the stuff you've seen in trailers that were released over a year ago.

Yes, the XMB is just fine how it is and if you don't like it, feel free to download literally thousands of other themes from the net or just make your own.

If the update took too long, either it was a lot of traffic on the servers or you should just consider upgrading.

And yes, these minor updates are great, just because we're getting them, but they should just release stuff like this in a bigger update. I won't use either one of these features and don't even know what the 2nd is. What they can do (because I know for a fact that it can be done) is speed up the atrociously slow in-game XMB, and let us do more with the in-game XMB, such as in-game voice chat. Voice messages are a must as well. We need a lot of stuff but meh.

   Re: damonous - 2008-12-02
 » Combat the NXE?

...You do realize that the NXE is a cheap M$ knock-off of the XMB, right? --On the XMB, you select categories by scrolling left/right. You select specific items by scrolling up/down. On the NXE, you select categories by scrolling up/down. You select specific items be scrolling left/right. ....Wow. What "ingenuity" from M$! :-) ...And, they couldn't even make up their mind. Because on the NXE if you hit the Xbox button, you get a miniaturized version of the old, painful "Blade" interface. Not to mention that (once you navigate past the handful of "pretty icons" on the XMB-alike interface), you're essentially back at the same exact interface that the 360 has had all along (selecting movies, games, demos, etc). ...I'm sorry: Sony doesn't need to make their extremely user-friendly and elegant interface (XMB) more like the Frankenstein + unintuitive 360 NXE interface.

   Re: mupet0000 - 2008-12-02
 » No

Haven't you noticed how every PS3 update takes like 15 minutes, 15 minutes is a long time in my opinion just for an update. Some PS3 updates dont come with much new features yet they still seem to take ages.

   Re: 93pauott - 2008-12-02
 » @ mupets

its because, if you missed one of the earlier updates, the features of thet update is still in the nxt update...

   Re: mupet0000 - 2008-12-02
 » No No

If sony wanted, they could have the PS3 send over what firmware version it is, if it was just the previous version, it could download a much smaller update file with only the newer features, if it was a much older version, it could download the update with everything included.

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-12-02
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

WTF are you talking about?

Each firmware update is it's own file. If you are behind one update then your PS3 downloads TWO FILES. The current one and the previous. Then installs them both.....and so on...

It's not rocket science.

   Re: ValiX - 2008-12-02
 » @ ISOHaven

No. That is incorrect. If you were referring to game patches/updates then you would be correct, but when it comes to the PS3 firmware updates, only one file is downloaded as this file contains everything that was in previous updates ;)

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-12-05
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Not according to what I read from Sony. You do realize that if that was the case, we would soon be downloading massive files each and every time we update. That would suck for EVERYONE.

and for good reason, im getting a crappy bug error that was fine beforehand. whenever i connect my psp it says it has 500mbs free when i clearly have 1919mb or so and when i copy picture albums from ps3 to psp the folder will show up in the psp but it says there are no pictures but when i go into that folder on the psp FROM the ps3's file browser they show up. the wierd thing is i connected it to a computer and the files ARENT on the psp at all, i even tried looking using irshell and they dont show up. its stupid and its happening for almost every album i copy. only one worked, and its still taking up memory on my psp but ONLY the ps3 can detect that they are on it i just dont get it

 » Ipod Support pls

Seriously, would love for my ps3 to recognize my ipod and enable me to use the ipods song listing instead of just numbered songs. (360 has had this pretty much since launch)

   Re: PimpFriedRice - 2008-12-02
 » I does

Go to XMB Music

At the top of the list highlight USB Device (Ipod), press triangle and select
Display All.

Select Ipod_Control folder and then select the music folder

Inside the music folder you'll find a series of folders that start with an "F", select any one of these and you'll notice that all of the songs are renamed to four letters if they are songs you ripped with iTunes. I think this only applies to the AAC codec, correct me if I'm wrong.
Example: DHRS, EXFY, etc.

Press X on any of them, you'll have to play the guessing game with all of your songs unless they are MP3's because they have different ID3 something or other..

You can copy them onto the PS3's HDD if you want, but you can't copy onto the Ipod with the PS3.

hahahahaah man you must be messing with me?
ofcourse he assumes they have a pc... or they wouldnt be commenting on here now would they...because the ps3 browser isnt really all that? and i doubt anyone would have an internet connection solely for gaming and not have a PC... HAHA you use your brain homes?

   Re: PimpFriedRice - 2008-12-03
 » I don't have a PC

I originally got broadband internet for online multiplayer gaming with the PS3 and I play online quite a bit so I make great use of it. I have an intenet browser because the PS3 just happens to have one and I also have Firefox on Linux. So I'm still on the internet without a PC although Sony would like to think that the PS3 dubs as a Cell computer. Sony should make an the updating process a little less boring. I mean make it so you can listen to music or something while the update downloads in the background or download it and start it when the user wants. Similar to updating the PSP where updates can be stored on the Memory Stick but on the HDD instead. Just a little thought to toy with!

   Re: PimpFriedRice - 2008-12-03
 » @mse369

I've commented on here on QJ many times with the PS3's XMB internet browser when I'm not in Linux or when I don't want to wait for it to boot. The XMB browser really isn't THAT BAD! Aside from lack of memory and some Java issues it does the vast majority of what most people would want out of it. Secondly, people can use a friend's PC or one at school, the public library, AH HELL I've even used the PSP's internet browser to post. Anyone that doesn't have a single track mind knows that there are many ways to access the net.

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-12-05
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

@mse369 - It seems YOU ALSO need to turn your brain on.

Many devices now offer internet, not just PCs.

Most of my comments come from my phone.

To everyone who thinks 15 minutes is long for an update, try having it take 4 hours with my 100KB/s connection. That's how long EACH update, minor or major, takes.

 » New servers please.

NXE took me 3-4 minutes to download, no joke. 20MB fibre optic connection.

This simple PS3 update took me 3 failed attempts and around 30 minutes of downloading to work. Clearly something's wrong with their update servers - they should REALLY invest in some new update servers. Or make it available on PC to download immediately - usually takes a few days for the PC download to become available.
