PS3

Can a backup be played on the PS3? Yes, says Paradox, an Internet release group. Apparently, there's an exploit. Here's what's making the rounds on the Internet:

| cOMPANY : SCEI | rELEASE DATE : 27 Dec 2006 |
| sYSTEM : PlayStation 3 | sIZE : 120 x 100mb |
| tYPE : Racing | vIDEO MODE : NTSC/JAP |
| sUPPLIER : Huey Lewis | cRACKER : Wireless B/G? |
| mEDIA : BLU-RAY | pLAYABLE : Yes they are |

| sPECIAL nOTE: |
| |
| Happy new year to all members who helped in the past and present! |
| And a question to all, is there a bug in the system software from |
| the playStation 3(R) Yes there is Nothing to add more.. |

What does this mean? Paradox has released a game image (ISO) of Motorstorm (Japanese) and in the NFO file, they say the game image is playable. And that's not the only thing that's making the hacks-and-exploits community smile: earlier, Paradox also said that the first sectors from a PS3 image (sector 0 to 20) are special and may be the decryption keys for the executables.

We ask the same question as the news source for this article: "Could the PS3 be exploited already?" Is that good news or bad news - I mean, it's good news for a lot of gamers, but is that good news for Sony? What's going to happen next?

Yes there is an exploit in the system software, but IDK if theyre using an older version or 1.32

to download ~15GB, no thanks!

 » exactly

SOny shouldn't fear this. The games now are too huge to download, and to buy them illegally won't be worth it or convenient.
Besides, I still haven't met a single person who did not own pirated games for the ps1, and it was still the top console.

 » Sony shouldn't worry

Until Super Internet or something even faster is available, nobody will even bother to down load a file of such an extreme nature. It takes a good week sometimes to dl 1gb files. To dl a 15gb file or larger, (or even a 50gb iso) the war will be over by then.

it may take 1 week on your 56k connection using WinMX, but using torrents and a 10MB Connection, a 1 GB file can be d/l'd in a few hours.

Are you a freaking chimp? It takes maybe 20 minutes to get 1GB. 15GB is easily a single day's download.

   Re: JoeBlaze (Unregistered) - 2007-01-12
 » ?

I have a 15Mbps (Megabit per second) connection which equals about 1.8 - 2 MBps (MegaBytes per second). I use Giganews which will utilize every bit of that connection. 15 GB + 15360 MB at a constant 1.8 MBps will take 143 Minutes which equals 2 hours and 23 minutes! So it would take me 3 hours max for a PS3 game. I wouldnt download one since I have no PS3 but if i had to its not a problem :?

 » Super Internet?

I don't know where you've been, but with a good DSL or Cable plan you can download 1GB pretty fast. Heck, Vanguard's beta download is 7.5GB for a 22GB install. Downloading a series of anime or a DVD ISO is usually around 4.5GB, and I'm sure there is a lot of that 15GB that can be compressed to a certain extent

   Re: Vietone - 2006-12-29
 » Wrong

This exploit is far less then the exploit on the Xbox360.

If this would kill the PS3, the Xbox360 would have been dead long ago.

This exploit requires a storage medium for Blue-ray games, this also requires knowledge of how to use the exploit.

The Xbox360 requires little knowledge whatsoever, just flash the DVD drive and burn Xbox360 games and play, nothing to it.

   Re: Devise (Unregistered) - 2006-12-29
 » ...

Obviously you have never tired flashing or even opening a 360 Vietone.

   Re: Vietone - 2006-12-29
 » Its easy

I was able to get the Xbox360 exploit working in less then an hour after reading about it on QJ.

Im very comfortable with working with hardware and was able to open the Xbox360, connect it to my computer, flash it and reassemble and play in less then an hour.

Right now, me and all my neighbors who have Xbox360s are now using the firmware exploit thanks to me.

Its extremely easy, much easier then installing mod chips.

   Re: Broken_Hero (Unregistered) - 2006-12-30
 » True

My Freind Already told me....that he can actually Play Copied 360 DVD game Discs without even having to Modchip..

   Re: hmmm (Unregistered) - 2006-12-30
 » ...

yes that is true, you can even play backed up games without opening your 360, just flash the DVD drive with a new firmware... but once you do that, you risk getting banned from LIVE and getting your 360 bricked!

He he, 15Gb isn' t anything enormous. Good compression + good internet and there you go ;) No more than 24h needed I think.

And about exploit. It's fantastic, so fast :)) Thanks to Paradox.
When we will get PS3 in Europe it already could be hacked. Nice work!

can we say 1.0?

 » What

Well sony, is not playing dumb, but it takes me like 12 hours downloading 15 mb,but if you have 60 gigabytes, well i guess it wouldn't be a problem, but they haven't learn with the psp yet,but i am sure if there is a way to crack the games sony will come up with something,so i buy game beacause i respect sony as a company.so will see.

use usenet and u can download at totally fullspeed. look at www.newsdemon.com, everything come out on usenet first anyway. 15 gigs would take a matter of hours. but i think the main concern right now is buying a blueray burner and blueray disks. youd have to download and enjoy at least 20-30 games before you would have made even. but i guess in a years time if this exploit is still availiable and blueray burners are cheaper, then it wont be a problem

i'm already playing copied games on my 360. hahaha. haven't even bought one game for the system yet!!!

   by pwnisher (Unregistered) - 2006-12-29
 » Well wtf

If they can get it playing why dont they release the info on how to play copied games. Maybe they feel sorry for sony because its soo soon so they just give out clues?

As for downloading 15 gigs is no problem even 25 gigs when you get up to 50 it'll take a little while but at 15 mb cable to fiber optic line a game should download fairly fast.

Well jut in case they got it working Sony might fix the problem in the nex production cycle or if it is unfixable Sony might even recall all PS3's on the market.

   by Dom (Unregistered) - 2006-12-29
 » Thing is..

... no one will download, all the fanboys saying "haha will download in 2 hours" just STFU, you know you cant. Plus, you would bit like 3 games on one 60 GB HDD, and 10 on 180 GB, so would wear it out preety fast. and, like some other dude said, if this were to kill the PS3, the 360 would be non-existant.

   Re: NightShade15 (Unregistered) - 2006-12-30
 » Hmm

Last time I checked the game files are not that large in ISO maybe 4-6 gigs. If I get a good torrent going at about 300kbps-600kbps I could maybe download it in about 5-8 hours. I only have about a 160gig hard drive and I don't care for expanding this computer any further, I couldn't see myself filling up the hard drive with ISO's of PS3 games, i'd end up backing it up on a Double Layer DVD. Or if comes to worse, break the larger ISO's into seperate RARs and multiple DVD's for future use. With that said, The 360 comment, I don't have the balls to break my 360 open and f' with the firmware on the DVD drive. Plus, Sometimes I enjoy opening a new game. Sometimes I enjoy getting stuff for free.

 » Sweet

Why put a 180 gig drive in your system. They have 750 gig satas for 300-400 bucks. Thats less then the price of 10 games. hmm... math 10 * say 15 gigs = 150 gigs still have 600 gigs left. and you dont have to switch out the games. So about 50 games on a 750 gig drive. Probably more depending on size of game. Some are only 5 to 8 gigs. As soon as they figure out how to put copied games into the game folder we are set! Just a matter of mounting the damn PS3 file system. Or redirecting to the linux partition :)

 » yay

This is great. And they wont have the files together. They will have them in several downloads. To make it easier. I cant wait.

   by Devise (Unregistered) - 2006-12-29

Sites are already sharing PS3 dumps. Most games are under 6GBs not 50GBs. This isn't good news for Sony, PS3 owners, or the gaming industry.

   by pwnisher (Unregistered) - 2006-12-29
» ok I found out they cracked the test ps3

I was talking to some peeps in #ps3 on efnet and they were saying paradox cracked a test (beta) ps3 that was released a while ago. which means it probably has some buggy beta firmware and whatnot. This means no free games for pirates yet and why they havent told anyone else how to play copied games.

   Re: meh (Unregistered) - 2006-12-30
 » ...

if this is true then all they did was burn their linux dump to a BD and insert. The beta/test ps3s have no backup prevention.

even so, that is still one step ahead.

yes i saw ps3 iso's by paradox and they range from 4-6.5 gb except for resistance which is 15 gb, even some pepole today posted on one torrent ste that they are playable on dvd's..no bluerays needed..can't wait to have a ps3

at the moment you can't play a ps3 game from a backup dvd right now even with an exploit. the drive can't read a dvd with the blue laser.

the graphic background that loads when a game is inserted is part of the security. if that info changes (different disk loaded) you will get an error. If you replace the origional disk after this error you will still recieve and error and have to restart the machine.

 » NOT YET!!!

I am a pirate but I hate to see the rough start that the ps3 has had be even rougher with the intoduction of piracy, I mean devolopers are already questioning if they want to make ps3 yet and this will do nothing but delay that, I dont mind piracy in fact I like it but I would want this to happen in like 2 years once the console gets on its feet.
