hdmi We've always thought that the PS3 and HDMI is the perfect couple! We all know the PS3 as a next-gen gaming console. More publicity shy but equally impressive is HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface), which links any compatible digital audio/video source, such as the PS3, to compatible digital audio/video monitor, such as HDTV.

About two months ago, no less than Sony Computer Entertainment">Ken Kutaragi was crowing about the PS3-HDMI partnership. His exact words were, "By introducing the next-generation HDMI 1.3 technology, with its high speed and deep color capabilities, PS3 will push the boundaries of audiovisual quality to the next level."

Sounds great except when you get your PS3 it won't come with an HDMI cable. Sony has confirmed that the PS3 will no longer ship with an HDMI cable because the company doesn't think there's enough of you out there with HDTV to justify including the HDMI cable even in the $599 PS3 package.

 » That is very dumb

so wat about the people who already have a hdtv and want to play there ps3 on it then wat, that would be very sad if they did.

   by Aythamie - 2006-09-02
 » duh, logically

off course there won't be a HDMI cable included
a HDMI cable costs €75

acctually it doesn't matter what the price is once you turn on the PS3 you'll be gratefull that you bought the PS3 + HDMI cable + Full HD TV

oh yea remember HD Ready ≠ Full HD

 » Price Drop?

i hope the price comes down by €75 then, Sony should give you an option to buy one with your PS3 at a discounted price.

 » If..

If I'm gonna spend like £425 on a PS3 then surely I can also afford an extra £25 for a High Quality HDMI Cable.

 » Sony stabs Themselves

This is one of those announcements when Sony keeps -without anyone's help- stabbing themselves. "There's not many people out there with HDTV to justify including the cable"? then what the hell is all this fuss about true hdtv and blueray. if there isn't enough people out there to include the cable, they could have released a console without blueray and cal it even. Sony is smart but they can sometimes be oh so danm dumb.

» sony thinks of the future

they added hdmi and blu-ray for the people 5 years from now.

sony doesn't expect that many people to buy the ps3 until the price drip. 5 years from now, you can pick up the 60 gig version for around 200 bucks. so really, including it with the launch systems would just drive up costs.

 » c'mon guys

this clearly has more to do with sony being broke than them not thinking enough people have hdtv's. Do you guys realize how much those cable costs? now multiply by 3 million and thats how much it costs them to ship that with just the launch consoles. I mean there already taking a gigantic hit on the console anyhow.

 » sooo

Everyone and there brothers are talking crap about how sweet ps3 and hdmi is and then suddenly they take it out of the package and now they are saying how it's not a big thing anyways.... intresting to say the least. But no ps3 will not have a price drop for not having the hdmi cable in the package. Oh and since the low end ps3 won't have the hdmi they won't be able to play the br movies at 1080p so says sony too... But I can get the high end modle my hdtv has two hdmi spots and I will be getting one for the ps3 but it's just another add-on I need to get but such is life

   by Planet - 2006-09-02
 » Hello?

Where in hell has Sony ever stated the PS3 will ship with an HDMI-cable? To break a promise you need to make one in the first place! *sigh*

please learn to tell apart what Sony wrote and what QJ did...

 » not so bad

i read the title and was in shock - I thought they staright up ripped out the hdmi compatability all toghether. what a relief. anyways, i've already got compound cables so I'll use those for a while and then upgrade to hdmi. man this thing is going to be SWEET!

   by comedy - 2006-09-02
 » well...

i have heard some talk of being able to squeeze 1080p through another cable (i think there's some sort of colour depth issue though)...

yeah, if you've actually got a 1080p capable tv you've already spent about 3000 dollars or more on a telly, buying an hdmi cable won't exactly break the bank will it?
but yeah, sony have probably looked at the numbers quite closely and simply said 'well if we don't ship it with hdmi we won't lose as much money' - and so there it is.

   by Warrior (Unregistered) - 2006-09-02
 » It's not difficult

If you want an HDMI cable just go and buy the cable. That's it. You can still play the PS3 with the normal cable on a HDTV, the HDMI cable is a bonus you will have to get yourself.

   by GameDev - 2006-09-02
 » Another stupid article...

Stop perpetuating the FUD QJ. Did your XBOX or PS2 ship with an S-Video cable? Even though those consoles were capable of S-Video fidelty video?

This is so lame.

 » so what

I want to see too where Sony stated it would ship with a hdmi cable.
...ah, Sony never said that...maybe thats why i am not surprised!!

thats bull i dont think thats true i mean first it an old ps3 its not going to be shipped in silver its black they are not putting hdmi on the $500 one but it will be on the $600 one

   by Vecha - 2006-09-02
 » really?

"sony have probably looked at the numbers quite closely and simply said 'well if we don't ship it with hdmi we won't lose as much money' - and so there it is."

I guess they didn't look at the numbers when they boasted about 1080p and blu-ray either right?

   by Dan (deathtok) - 2006-09-02
 » how about

If you have an HDTV and have cable most cable companies will give their customers a free HDMI cable; assuming you have the HD cable box.

   by DJ (Unregistered) - 2006-09-02
 » .

As long as they include a cable that does both Component and Standard AV with both SKUs, they'll be fine. I guess not many people realize that the Playstation 3 outputs 1080p through its AV port, not just through HDMI. It's explained on the official Playstation 3 site and numerous interviews with Kaz Hirai.

 » Another post ruining PS3.qj.net

Thanks Allaric, your *****ty posts truly contribute to this site's quality.

HDMI cables range in prices from 10$ - 120 $ for super high quality Monster cable.

SONY didn't include one, cause well, HDMI cable isn't included with MOST BD-R, HD-DVD players. Also SONY could include the cheapest 2m cable, but would it make much sense?

Not really.

You get AV cables, same as with XBox 360, not to mention that XBox 360 doesn't support HDMI AT ALL, not even HD-DVD add on supports HDMI.

You guys really need to kick Allaric out of this site.

Why don't you *****er post Fight Night Round 3 PS3 screens?

 » "lets be serious"

sonys messing up big time. its getting harder and harder to defend them. they have about one months to convince people that the ps3 it worth every penny.

i just think if it aint standard its just crap, becase it will not be fully utilized for gaming now or it in future. i am talking about the whole 1.3 deep color thingy. i just wished they hand one system with every thing. i guess fans of sony have had years of practice defending the system ie.. ps2. now its no different. has sony learn their lesson from last gen, the competition has you can see their tactics have changed. they have so much ridding on the this gen with blu-ray and whatnot. its like they placed all there chipps on the table, and they have worst poker face.

if the ps3 fails to sell its all sony fault. they have the larger market share, this is the third console so the arent noobs, over ten year in the game. they did hate on microsoft for the two "sku's" and now they are changing specs and nothing seems final or solid two months before launch, "down grade" the only reason i want one is to play the old franchises like metal gear, tekken etc... for real though the price is justified you have to look at it from a long term perspective.sony don't seem to understand that they do not have that opportunity, it about hitting the mark fast, hard ,and cheap.

if they fail at the TGS the are so done. every one know they are not going to sell as much as last gen it just how mush less.

----sorry for the long comment, damn that sucks ---
i have the funds just want the bad batch to pass i am getting one if febuary one year after i got my 360.

The PS3 is future proof. It has Blu-Ray and HD because HD is "becoming" the next big thing/standard in Television. It isn't today, but by the end of 2007 it's said that 25% of US households will own a HD TV. And in 2008 it will grow, and so on.

   by Mli (Unregistered) - 2006-09-02

I didn't get a USB cable for my cell phone, or my printer for that matter.
No biggie. The HDMI is cool, but not a priority for me so soon. When I get a HD TV though...

 » hell yeah

knowledge, fight night for the ps3 looks amazing. i couldnt believe my eyes when i saw those screens, it looks better than the 360 (cause of development time) and the facial animation is wow. it even looks better than what they showed at e3 05, now i cant wait to see how polished madden will be.

» what is with you people?

First you get excited over the showing of the PS3 PROTOTYPES that were designed in 3 colors and had a ***** load of extras that no one needed. 3 ethernet ports? 7 front side usb ports for all the contronllers? 2 HDMI? Come on, they did right to make it with just one ethernet port and WIFI and taking out the extra HDMI port on the high end. Not to mention the use of all 7 controllers at once would be so sparced that all the charging ports would be unnessicary. So why did they remove these?

Well if we think back they took them out on a two part, heating and costs. The consumers just dont have a need for two hdmi and 3 ethernet ports. Did anyone notice this snippet of news? No they over looked it and the majority went on a fit when they show the more finalized product. That was lacking all that the prototypes showed was annouced previously to be removed. No lies just your ignorance.

HDMI is not needed for 1080p games! Its only needed for 1080p movies that have DHCP protection and guss what blu-ray movies will not have that as a standard UNTIL 2010-2012, so HDMI isnt really needed for even the low end PS3 for 1080p, component cables will work just fine for it. Also it was never announce that even the high end would come with hdmi.

As for the two sku's, Unlike microsoft which crippled there cheap version(which mind you is why many bashed on MS's idea). Neither the 499 nor 599 version is crippled, both have what you need, wireless controllers, ethernet port, hdd, bluray, cell, rsx, component cables that are able to output 1080p. Not everyone needs an HDMI port, have wifi in their house, nor really need the memcard slots. These are extras for the tech savy, not the general public with will be buying the bulk of the ps3's.

Bottom line is this. People stop bashing sony for your own *****ing ignorance, im tired of these mute points that have no solid backing. Get your facts straight, quit your whinning and use some common sense. Id see where youd have a problem with this if it had solid backing but its all flaming bull***** from crap bloggers. Dont be like the news, get your facts straight without biased comments and misunderstandings. Thats what editorials are for! Postivie and negitive, ying and yang, you need both to see the picture or youll just have black and white.

   by KnowLedge - 2006-09-02
» Seriously someone needs to kick out that dude....

Are you guys letting him post BS just to get publicity? If not, then why do you still let him post?

All of Allaric's contributes are SONY bashing rumors, or BS articles.

You get HDMI cables with your TV, rarely with players, and even if you get it with something, it's still that cheap crappy cable you can buy for couple $.

Does M$ include HDMI cable? ***** no, they don't even support HDMI, they don't support DTS HD, DTS Master Audio, 1080p, HDCP - they have nothing.

Why are there no Fight Night Round 3 screens posted yet?

I want to mindlessly bash XBox 360, just like Allaric bashes SONY all the time.

   by BlueViper (Unregistered) - 2006-09-02

doesnt matter for me, as long as the port is still there:P I dont have a hdtv but when I get one I probably get a cable with it or can buy it pretty cheap. I would probably lose it if I get it with the ps3-package anyway:P

to #32:
let him hate sony, some articles may be bs but most is just news, even if they are bad news. you never know, maybe qj has someone to post all the bad news so people hate him instead of qj:P no, seriously there was a while when there was a lot of articles bashing sony here, good that they doesnt come up as frequently now...
