Sony PlayStation 3 - Image 1

In what would be good news for those who want to extend the already-powerful PS3's functionalities even further, the Sony console's Remote Play system has apparently been successfully reverse engineered.

This comes thanks to the efforts of Dashhacker, who managed to break the authentication system. But wait, what does this mean for PS3 owners? Here's a quick explanation from the PS3-Hacks announcement post:

Well for starters you’ll soon be accessing your PS3 from just about anywhere -- your PC, your iPhone, your whatchamacallit, and whatever other Internet-enabled device.

Sounds cool. Dashhacker is reportedly working on a portable API for the hack. Stay tuned for further updates. In the meantime, you can talk about hacks, games, and all things PS3 on our Sony PlayStation 3 forums.

Thanks to Tcraw for the tip!

I would imagine that the psp has some sort of authentication it uses to tell the ps3 it's a psp system, he probably just reverse engineered that so other things would work too... if it's real

 » Ya...

It a very cool feat, and I don't see why it can't be done.

Really he has just found out how to trick the ps3 into thinking any device is a PSP and to accept and send data to/from it...

Only use I could see if being bored at school and watching some movies.....I think this has the most potential on Itouch/phones....

 » this is pretty cool

I can't support anything that allows pirating on the ps3 but this actually sounds like a cool approach. This guy should submit the idea to sony and let them put it on as an official feature.
