Looking at the Future of the PS3One of the problems with prophecies and forecasts is that if you look too far ahead, you miss what's right in front of you.

Game industry analysts have had different sorts of opinions on who will come out on top at the end of the next-gen console race. While some have predicted Sony's downfall as a result of their current pricing strategy, the Yankee Group predicts Sony's dominance with the arrival of the PS3.

There's just one hitch, of course: the PS3 still isn't being manufactured, let alone sold.

A recent Gamespot interview with Sony Computer Entertainment's American President Kaz Hirai outlined the overall projection Sony has for the future, while at the same time keeping mum about certain topics. In addition to discussing the result of Yankee's prediction, Hirai also mentioned that point about the PS3 still not being in the manufacturing stage. Hirai says,

We haven't started manufacturing yet. Some of our ops guys were actually just in China, and also in Japan just reviewing the [production] lines and everything else. But they are, again, preparing as we speak to get the manufacturing going. We've not announced and we haven't set really a specific date to say, "As of this day we're going to start manufacturing."

Hirai was also somewhat evasive with launch titles, but also mentioned that the real fireworks display for new consoles happens a lot later. He said that everyone was still hedging their bets on one console or another and on what launch titles there will actually be. The same problem happens with the bold, yet reserved, predictions by market analysts on the future of the console wars. While it might seem like troubling news, as it's hard to imagine building out 2 million units or so two to three months before launch time, but there's still time, so it's not as bad as it looks.

In the end, despite the current worries of gamers and analysts alike about the future of the PS3 and the overall health of Sony's gaming market, all of this is still relative. As Hirai mentions, "it won't get locked down until about a month before launch," so we still have time to keep the optimism for Sony's prized handheld and new console out and about.

I aint worried. Even if they dont make the targeted amount of units...they'll make it up. Hopefully they will do a price break sometime in 2007.

Actually, the components are being manufacture. It's just that the PS3 is not being assemble. Cell and RSX have been in production for some time now. Blu-Ray laser and other components have also been in production for some time. The finaly assembling of the PS3 is what is left. And that will start soon.

 » Final Hardware Assembling

I agree to number 8, some people misread earlier from ths thread. Like he said, The components of Cell, RSX, Blu-Ray & other components have already been in production, since last month. The final hardware is on its way to assemble the full PS3 Hardware along with Controller, AC Power Adapter, Instruction Manual & Package & more... Sony need to start the manufacture today by November 7th for Japan, 11th for North America/Canada & 11th for Europe/Africa.

 » 2 million units only!?

That would suck for a world wide launch. That would make it very hard to get. I hope they get more than that.

yeah, as ibm have been making cells for ages, and nvidia rsx, asustek are making the motherboard... makes sense, that's their speciality.

it would be a desperate situation if no components had been manufactered at all!

why is the fact that this analyst has said something positive about ps3 being drowned by half-truths about production slowness?!
last time an analyst decided to malign the ps3 it got a nice large article to itself, and now that the 'yankee group' have actually predicted good news you've almost failed to mention it!!

 » 2 million at launch,

wasn't the sony plan to get 2 million out for launch, then to hit their next target of 6 million by march?
that would be high-speed if you think about it, look at how nintendo ds has managed to sell hyper-fast, and managed 20 million in about 18 months (is that about right?)... and 360 has been out nearly a year and has sold about 5 million.
6 million is their 'amount shipped' target mind you... not necessarily sold.

» Actually XBOX 360 has 5.05 million shipped

Those are the last numbers they showed a few weeks ago.

To me it seems like low to have 2 million for a world wide launch. I guess i'll be camping.

 » ps3..

man im totally sick of those predictions that ps3 is gona fail sony and whatsoever. I mean dude, it's THE SONY we're talking about omfg, how can they ever go wrong??

lets talk about the truth, we all know, deep somewhere in our hearts, that the 360 blows, and if the doa series weren't made for the 360 but for ps3, the 360 won't even sell half as well as it is now. 1 single game.

ps3 can never go wrong.

Dont be stupid, sony has been going wrong for the past 2 years, you know deep in your heart that the PS3 will blow just ike the 360 has blown.
And i agree with the fact that the hardware hasnt been assembled and i think the reason is the case to fit it in is too small. And this is the reason why there wont be any games playable at LGC.
