PS3 breaks sales record in UK - Image 1Just moments after the PlayStation 3 (PS3) European and UK launch were over, Sony Computer Entertainment UK managing Director Ray Maguire was quoted saying "Our egos want to make sure that we have the biggest launch in history." He even mentioned that total sales will go up this weekend. Well, it's already weekend and the numbers are in.

We don't know about egos, but we're certain that Sony's efforts paid off...

According to reports, the PS3 did break the record for the fastest selling home console in UK or what Maguire refers to as a little island where rents and rates are at an absolute premium. Company Chart Track stated that a total number of 165,000 out of the 220,000 PS3 units available has been sold during the launch weekend.

When we consider sales of all consoles, Sony doesn't need to worry at all as the record is owned by its handheld system, the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Back in September 2005, when the unit launched in the said market, its total sales during the launch weekend rose to 185,000.

Nintendo was able to sell 105,000 Wii units during its December launch last year while just 70,000 Xbox 360 systems was sold back in its 2005 launch.

Its pretty impressive if its official.

» No offence to you HighPS3, this is for all fanboys

Come on, are you PS3 fanboys really this nieve. They shipped 220K consoles. No duh they sold more than 360 (Shipped 70K) and Wii (Shipped 30k) at launch. If you have more stock, you stell more, this isnt rocket science people.

The only fact is that Sony didnot sellout at launch, and only moved 165K out of 220K at launch. At freaking launch people, every console sells out.

IF you cant sellout at launch, how do you expect to sustain sales?

   Re: lolnumbers (Unregistered) - 2007-03-27
 » @Lurker

Yeah, It's neat how Nintendo can sell 105K when they only shipped 30K

   Re: Zen (Unregistered) - 2007-03-27
 » Nice try

In that case - hats off to SONY for making enough units and delaying the launch to allow for a successful start to the PS3's life in europe. Can't fault it.

Nice sale!
But how much many wii units where on offer?
You make it sounds minimal...but if nintend woo had 150 000 units to offer than that is good...

   Re: dorkdork777 (Unregistered) - 2007-03-26
 » Hmm...

This makes me wonder if, had Nintendo had unlimited supplies of the Wii available, how many would it sell? Same goes for the PS3... Both sold out in many locations, so neither launch could live up to its full potential. All this piece of news shows is that Sony had lots of PS3s, and there was a good level of demand. (Well done to Sony for finally pulling it off, BTW. ;-)

but this shows that price is the barrier SONY needs to lower to get all PS2 fanbase jumping to its next-get baby. Exclusives AAA titles can be system sellers (and a lot of them are coming) but without any doubt a price drop is utterly needed.

SONY we are waiting for you, make PS3 cheaper for cheap people like me! I'm not from that little island called UK :D

Don't be a sore looser. If can't take this little defeat image how you'll feel in a couple of years time when the 360 will indeed be surpassed despite the year and a half head start. The future's SONY flavoured.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-03-28
» PS3 fans have trouble with thinking

If there is more PS3 units available for sale with an item they had to wait for a long time, there will be more sales than an item with limited supplies when it comes out! Are you people that stupid, seriously?
XBOX 360 was sold out all over the world (except Japan) for 5 months! 70,000 sold because only 70,000 shipped! Same thing with the Wii. That is actual demand people!
In the US, sony intentionally limited shipments to create artificial demand. Even then they were readily available 3 weeks later in most areas! That is a horrible level of demand. These sales will not and cannot last!
Even if you're the most die hard PS3 fan in existance, you'd need an IQ well below mental retardation to think the PS3's high sales will last more than a few weeks.

 » ...

I guess I don't have to answer the question from Mr. No Common Sense now as QJ answered it for me (in referance to the "bad" sales he believes the PS3 has)....

Xbox360 sold 9.75 mill in more than a YEAR

PS3 in just 3 months sold a third of that

Not to mention the total slow down (near a halt) of the 360 weekly sales. Plus the PS3 has a better start than the 360 did when it launched. Should I even go on about the 360 in Japan?....lol

   Re: devildude - 2007-03-26
 » wrong

xbox 360 sold more than 10 milion unit in 1 years and sony just sold 2milion ps3 worldwide in 4 months and they delayed europe cause they couldnt mk enough ps3 and they lied about worldwide ps3 launch and microsoft keep their promised about launching xbox 360 worldwide . sony had enought time to mk more ps3 for europe do u think if they did launch ps3 in europe in same time as us and jap they would mk enought ps3 to sell like xbox 360 did on launch date hell no $ony is *****ing *****

   Re: SenorDingDong (Unregistered) - 2007-03-27
 » wrong also

Microsoft didn't keep their promise about launching worldwide. They pulled out of other markets, such as Australia + NZ, Mexico, HK. Australia didn't get it 'til March 23 '06 (exactly 1 year before PS3).

   Re: rqwr (Unregistered) - 2007-03-27
» Oner001 yer you go on about Japan but the Look at The worlds biggest sales the USA

The US Hardware sales for February
360 - 228,000

PS3 - 127,000

The PS3 is seeling bad give it a month and even its UK sales will drop below 40,000 per week

 » last year: 70,000 XBOX 360s available, 70,000 sold.

How long can PS3 sales like this keep up? The die hard sony fans have been waiting a long time and most probably have theirs by now. Sales will go down pretty quick. Now they need to try to win over the PS2 owners.

When word got out 100 people were given free 47" flat panel HDTVs as a suprise gift, I'm sure other people started thinking, "hey, maybe I'll get a suprise gift?" There wasn't a huge number of people at the launch ceremony.

I can't imagine the XBOX 360's launch sales if they could have shipped like 2 million.

Compra uma PS3 e cala-te de vez!

   Re: CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2007-03-26
 » Yeah, Your Somewhat Right

The regular XBOX is no longer made and support is gone as well. Probably a lot of XBOX fans went to the 360 by now. PS3 has this many people who purchased one and many people are still waiting because the PS2 is not dead yet. It is just a matter of time before mass conversion begins.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-03-27
» Not that they will win over many PS2 users

I liked my PS2 and PSP, but realized the PS3 is nothing but a ripoff. Playstation really isn't even a game console anymore.
What makes you think the PS2 owners will automatically get a PS3? Most people still using a PS2 are POOR, and most PS2 owners are used to a huge game selection!
PS3 will have the same software support as the Gamecube (which is why is didn't do very good.) All third party multiplatform games with only a couple decent exclusives.
I can't wait for the 3 week sales nosedive like there was in North America. Then the fanboys won't seem so confident anymore.

   Re: mcsiadf (Unregistered) - 2007-03-27
 » are you kidding me

dude, get your tounge out of bill gates' ass for a minute. And get the ***** off qj you moron. You really think that the ultimate next gen system is going to be shorted on game releases? Have you looked at the lists? The *****ing games are all coming. The fact that the ps3 sold almost as many consoles in the UK as it did in the USA (where there WAS a supply problem) is amazing. That's just one weekend in march. And your arguements about not buying a ps3 because it HAS a bd player? Why? I wouldn't have bought one if it didn't. That's why I was never interested in the 360. DVD is on the way out eventually. I want a console that thinks ahead. Oooh add ons? Yeah, I have this monolith PS3 sitting next to the tv, with nothing attached to it. Looks great. Or I could have an Xbox, with all the wireless adapters, wifi box, add on hddvd drive, whatever the ***** ass else I could add on to try and make it close to the ps3, but it will never be. Now you would have spent more than a ps3 to make it, and it looks like an octopus on the shelf.

If Sony SOLD 165,000 of the 220,0000 shipped this would create sellouts in certain areas ( goods do'nt sell evenly some areas sell many more than others ) I'm i contact will people in the retail trade in UK, France and Holland all have mentioned poor sales and stock build up. Sorry but i'm calling BS on those numbers.
   by Jimi B (Unregistered) - 2007-03-27
 » ... Strange

Whats odd is that I still can't walk in and buy a Wii, but I can walk into any retailer in town and pick up a PS3. In one store where I live they have more PS3's than 360's in stock.

Its great that the PS3 has sold so many, but I think that its only because of the huge number of consoles they shipped.

Re: Who Knowz (Unregistered) - 2007-03-27
» Doesn't say much for Wii

Considering how low tech the Wii is, is doesn't say much for their manufacturing process. There is no ground breaking technology. It's off the shelf components. They could be keeping the numbers low to induce a false shortage. Then as soon as units show up, they are snapped up, because they are limiting supply.

   Re: Lurker (Unregistered) - 2007-03-27
 » Says less for Sony

Seriously, Nintendo shipped everything they made to customers. They didnt make you wait 6 months to build up stock, so they could spin the numbers. The wii is impossible to find, gets double on ebay. Do i really have to explain how capitalism works.

Man you PS3 fanboys are a dense bunch.

stupid nintendo fanboys go get a life, i bet you anything prior to humping the wii you owned a ps2 and as soon as nintendo and microsoft made some success you jumped ships cause you are all cowards, Nintendo is weak and im sick of their antics sacrificing quality for useless innovative novelties wtf first with the DS... lol like 5 - 10 3D games and the rest are either 2D snes games or cel shaded *****, then the pathetic wii which seriously the novelty wore off far too soon for my liking, the wii is really good for collecting dust as it is graphically inferior to both the PS3 and X360... oh and with the 360 what the hell is with the fan on it, seriously its louder than any standard sound system freaking thing cant even last 1 hour of oblivion before it starts having a fit and overheating...

 » to all the rest

i just want to say that everyone who settled with a Wii or a 360 are just bitter cause they just can't afford the PS3... that's the fact here... they keep on dissin Sony on this or that but the thing is they just can't afford it and they're trying to justify why they're better off by not having it. they are making so much noise now in dissin Sony cause they know in the future they won't be able to do so cause the PS3 has the lifespan which a REAL NEXT GEN console should have...

To everyone dissin the PS3... we know you guys are poor.. we understand and symphatize...

 » Yes I'm so jealous I can't get that PS3. sob....

I bought a $10,000 motorcycle last month. It is both fun and useful. The PS3 is neither fun nor useful. It is a poor value for the money. Coming up with money to buy the things I want is no problem.
I DO NOT WANT A PS3 BECAUSE I HAVE AN XBOX 360 THAT HAS GOOD GAMES AND I THINK THE PS3 IS USELESS.
Is that clear enough for you? The PS3 would only gather dust (which it's really good at) in my living room.

 » Lol.....different consoles different market

Hey people.....can we stop the clash of which is better between Wii and playstation 3 , its obvious that its two different markets. It might be true that ps3 sold alot of consoles, but it didnt do too badly in the US besides the stock shortages and the shooting and all.... the fact is that sales have declined. also as it stands, no console that did well in its first 5 months has ever failed as a console....so wii is set...maybe ps3 is ....not sure and xbox360 will have to prove itself as the competition heats up. it still stands to reason though that if you grab all the consoles and compare them to the ACTUAL (non hype) sales of the DS they still dont compare.....even the PSP sold better than the ps3 last month. its not the release thats important, its the sustainability. graphics was never the hold on the market.....its fun......PSP did well on release in the UK.... but the best selling handheld in the world easily is the DS ( check the NDP reports)..... so dont get side tracked by the release.....its the follow through that counts......i dont want to see sony dropped further behind so it will be good if this statement is true.....but sony has a long way to go.
