firmware update 1.54 - Image 1It may not exactly be the big March update we're waiting for, but it will do for now. Sony has just updated the PS3's firmware to 1.54, and is now available for the guys who've kept their consoles logged on the net.

Aside from the routine security updates, this update now allows console owners to use a compatible USB camera to go with their next video chat session. Read on for the full change list (1.5/1.51 included):

Users

  • You can now select an image to use as the User icon from [Photo].
Settings
  • [Key Tone] has been added as an option under [Sound Settings].
  • [Delete Backup Data] has been added as an option under [System Settings] > [Backup Utility].
  • WEP 128, WPA-PSK (TKIP) and WPA-PSK (AES) have been added as security methods that can be used with [AOSS™] under [Automatic].*
  • If you have already set up for AOSS using an earlier version of the system software, you must perform AOSS setup again to use the security methods listed above.
  • When [Automatic] is selected, the security method to be used is automatically set.
Game
  • New for 1.51: Support for PLAYSTATION®3 format software titles has been expanded.
Friends
  • New for 1.54: [Screen Mode] has been added as an option in the options menu for video chat. The image of the person you are chatting with during video chat can now be changed to match the screen size.
  • New for 1.54: You can now use a compatible USB camera compliant with USB video class (UVC) for video chat.
  • For information on supported models and usage instructions, contact the retailer where the cameras are sold.
  • The method for saving your password / signing in automatically under PLAYSTATION®Network has been changed. There are now two separate options.
Other
  • You can now enter text in Korean using the on-screen keyboard.
As said before, stay alert for firmware 1.60, which is rumored to do some strange things to your console's XMB backgrounds...

HUH? Not even all the PS3 games work? sony's going to have a very rough time getting the PS2 games to work then.

Wow your stupid! Its for future games you art-tard, you know on the psp when you need to update your firmware to play newer games; this is what this update does! Games that require firmware 1.54 will ask you to update.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-28
 » .

On the PSP, updating firmware to play a new game is only required for security reasons. Is that what's going on? If that's the case, I don't know why it would be included in the list as a "feature."
I almost thought it was a typo that was supposed to say "New for 1.51: Support for PLAYSTATION®2 format software titles has been expanded." Guess they aren't making much progress with that. Good luck with that when they remove/lock out the emotion engine.

That was funny as hell!!! I cant believe somebody would actually think there are PS3 games that dont work on the PS3 lmao!!

» it's only funny because you're so stupid

It was a joke, fool
The point was why the hell is it a new firmware "feature."
sony always makes a big long list of improvments with new firmwares with mostly trivial, stupid stuff.

 » good job!!!

nice to know that SONY released another firmware update.

i applauded them because they are consistent in releasing updates every few weeks. and this is a plus for european and asian potential customers who plans to purchase a PS3 this year. no more issues regarding backward compability and etc. etc.

now if you have a problem with that and so stubborn to go online and update your firmware...then PS3 is not meant for you. (sarcastic) haha.

i didnt even know you could video chat. can someone tell me how to do that?

   by Vietone - 2007-02-28
 » ..

You could always video chat from day 1 of the PS3 release.

You just had to start a voice chat with someone and it will show their video feed if they had one. Otherwise it will show your Icon.

BTW, the Xbox Vision camera is verified to work with the PS3 since it seems to follow the UVC standard.

» Is there a list of UVC cameras?

I've looked a little. Maybe someone knows of a list of UVC webcams, somewhere out there? Why don't they just open it up for usb drivers... lol

Another bull***** update.Sony needs to fix the resolution
issue for older 1080i tv. 95% of hdtv sales to date
are 1080i with no hdmi input.

 » 1080i works perfectly since v1.5

I don't know what all this BS about 1080i not working. Mine has worked since day 1 by using component cables for the PS2 ($14.99 for the multi platform versions at Gamestop).

The one good change I see with v1.54 is that I can now (finally) play MPEG-4 files from my Sony Digital camera. :)

   Re: hater (Unregistered) - 2007-03-01
 » it is

I do have it hooked uo with component cables
and yes the XMB does run 1080i
When you start a game, say need for speed carbon it downgrades to 480p and when you put in F1 championship edition it plays opening
credits then causes tuner to freak out and keeps trying to shift resolution

You all know that the PS2's Eyetoy works as a camera and microphone on the PS3, right? This is how i am using it on my PS3, so i'm speaking from personal experience...just saying so noone pays a lot of money to get a good PS3 camera with the eyetoy HD coming in a few...

I wish one of these firmware updates fixes the problem between my 37" westinghouse and the system. I'm getting tired of changing the video setting on my tv everytime I load up any type of media on my PS3
