robber - Image 1Sony may consider the launch of its high-end PlayStation 3 console as a smashing success, but some of the first buyers would say otherwise. Several accounts of young owners told stories of blatant muggings minutes after the purchase.

Among the first of such incidents was that of 18-year-old thief Peyton Strickland who was shot by North Carolina police in the US launch of the console. Strickland mugged a student of two of the machines and scurried away only to pay a high price for the felony at the hands of the law.

The UK launch of the PAL PS3 was no different. In Walthamstow, 21-year old Angel Sanchez lined up for nearly two days to get his PS3. After leaving the shop, he and his mother were attacked by several young men. Sony and Game, the local retailer, has so far offered no assistance in recovering the system or paying for medical bills.

A similar incident happened to another fellow whose attackers had an escape car as a getaway vehicle. "We have expressed concerns before about midnight shopping. If you are walking along in the early hours carrying a plastic bag with a computer shop emblazoned on it, it's an advert to say 'come and rob me'," said a spokesman for the local law enforcement unit.

Shoppers are advised to avoid buying expensive consoles in the small hours to avoid these mishaps. We hope to hear less of such incidents in future events.

 » Jeez another wrong article

'The UK launch of the PAL PS3 was no different . . . Sony and GAME, the local retailer, has so far offered no assistance . . . paying for medical bills.'

Erm in the UK we have a National Heath Service which is a state ran healthcare system so all medical bills are free. No wonder GAME and Sony are not paying for medical bills.. 4th article this week I've corrected, come on guys.

Anyway thats the reason I plan my way home on midnight launches and didnt go to the PS3 midnight launch. It was not worth the muggings.

On it's own, everyone already knows people got mugged walking around in the middle of the night with expensive hardware in a clearly marked shopping bag. That's not headline worthy though, the real headline is the added mud of Sony putting their customers lives' in danger by having midnight launches. What a load of crap!

It doesn't matter where you live, it is still risky to carry all that around in the middle of the night. But of couse, it's Sony's fault.

There was nothing in the newspapers over this, and the launch was a complete success in the UK. Also why would he have waited two days when you can walk into any store and buy one because of high stock levels! All this is bull!

'paying for medical bills'

What the hell you stupid arrogant american write. We have the NHS which pays for medical bills instead of us! That is why you fought for your independance you arrogant idiots! Cuz you didnt want to be taxed for something that we didnt give you!

Apparently, people are being mugged for their wallets also. Why isn't this news?

The first thing you should do when you buy anything expensive is to put it into an unmarked bag.that way potential theives don't recognise it.

» are you saying I'm stupid?

You only need to worry when it's a PS3 and the robbers know you have one. The most worthless people in the world want PS3s, so of course the criminal element would like to mug you for one.
I stole my PS3 from a family of 4. I cold coc ked the dad and smacked the mom while the kids were crying. I took the PS3, got home, played resistance for 20 minutes and got bored then pawned it for $200. It's not even worth stealing a PS3!

..he then went on to carry on sitting on his lazy fat arse doing f**k all to help the matter.

Seriously, what a *****ty statement to make, he might as well have just shrugged and said "what ya want me to do 'bout it?".

Cops here only work to punish people for victimless crimes. Unless it's really easy to bust them, somebody that steals your stuff gets to keep it and walk away.
Non violent drug offenders fill our prisons, while the murderers and rapists walk away after a slap on the wrist.

Al least in the UK you don't have to worry about being shot for holding a wallet.

sony and game won't pay for a replacement console or medical bills? Are you kidding me? Where in the world is that sort of thing typical? Are you basing this off of some biased news that microsoft maybe replaced a defective console or 5 million?? lol. What the hell kind of reporting is this?

i guess people are tired of commenting on any kind of make-up/biased sounding news qj post up.
sony to blame for midnight sale? stores can sell em any time they like, sony cant force em retailers. i believe some retailer opt to sell ps3 the morning after @ 7am and 9am repectively.
though its true you shouldn't say such things to people specially if you are a cop, you are a public servant meaning if you know these things can happen, you as a cop should report to your seniors and act to prevent wrong things to happen, your comment simply tells that you are irresponsible and not worthy of serving the people.

and another yes people should be aware of dangers lurking everywhere, they should be extremely cautious when buying expensive things, call a taxi from the store premises then go home just to be safe.

***** you Manny!! If you really did do that to that family you're a c**t!!!

You're the worthless one!!
I know that guy in the uk that was robbed of PS3 and it WAS in the papers, The Sun and the London Lite!!

The papers of course made up some sh*t like Sony and Game didn't want to know... He had'nt approached them yet!!

It has been resolved now... The problem lay with the Mall for NOT notifying Police of shop opening and NO security!!

And to the person who said he should have put it in an obscure bag... figure this out: how do you disuise a PS3 shaped item?? into another bag when the only item that is for sale in the WHOLE mall is the PS3?? And the robbers KNOW THAT!!!
