More promo girls should save the PS3 - Image 1Sony might be prominent in Japan, but the PlayStation 2 and PSP take most of the hardware sales share. The ambitious PS3 is suffering, just like in most places (except Germany).

Media Create Co.'s latest weekly retail sales data for Japan show that the PS3 sold 8,659 units - all time low for the console. It's not much different from last week's 8,839 units sold, but things aren't looking good. Software sales aren't going well neither: no PS3 titles are on the top 50 from last week 'til now.

On other hand, PSP sold 27,505 while the good ol' PS2 is still fighting with 10,881. Plenty of third-party publishers supporting the PS2 with games that never reach outside Japan make it no surprise, that the gamers there lean toward the machine with a wider library.

Sony lost US$ 563 million in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year due to PS3 manufacturing costs and had sales figures that would make Ken Kutaragi cry.

The 80GB version in Korea could be made available in other territories, says Media Create Co. Maybe we'll get our price cut too, but that isn't very likely. It's pretty obvious that Sony needs to make a move and make ends meet, or else they'd be crossing their fingers hoping that new titles will generate more interest among those that don't own a PS3 yet.

 » FIRST!! (or maybe not)

Wow, that felt weird... n00b-yness...

When you're struggling to sell even in your home court, then you know you're not doing good.

Other than Blu-Ray, I paid $600 plus tax to play demos and PS2 games?? You think that sounds appealing to many?

» 360 now sells more software in Japan than the PS3

This is big news to see the PS3 failing even in its previous strongest territory, The 360 software is now outselling the PS3s in Japan unthinkable even 3 months ago.

It will only take One big 360 release to put the PS3 in last place even in Japan where it is the only place it sells more than the 360 and the funny thing is it could happen in Two weeks time when Forza 2 (A DRIVING GAME AT THAT) is released.

When I play on games like MotoGP,Project Gotham in the last month a lot of Japanese players have been playing whereas before there were none, so it looks like they have started to take a liking to driving games and Forza 2 will certainly be the One that will sell if that has now become the case............

And Lost Odyssey is due out in Japan Q4 2007 so it could be very interesting....

 » Big Games

Then wait for MGS4 and FFXIII, two games that are probably the most highly anticipated games in Japan, to come out after and make the 360 old as floppy drives.

 » shut up

The PS3 is dying and you know it. It's obvious the only reason it's selling in Japan at all is because of the blu ray player, and faint hopes the current exclusive games will be worth it. Even the 360's sales don't look so bad compared to the PS3's sales in Japan. Konami and Square will have no choice but to make Metal Gear 4 and Final Fantasy XIII mulitiplatform, then the PS3 will be officially dead well before it's supposed 10 year lifespan. There will be absolutely no reason to own a $600 PS3 when is has no decent exclusive games and blu ray players are below $400. None.

 » Xbox 360 [Halo 3] Vs. PS3 [Killzone 2]: The Ultimate Analysis

There’re 2 types of NEXT-GEN games: brand-new games and heavily-updated games.
* Brand-new
- There’re no relationships between the predecessors and the new title (made from scratch, built from the ground up).
- These titles have the capability to use most potential power of the systems (consoles).
- These titles look spectacular and fantastic in the graphics, sound effects, physics, and technology departments.
- Gears of War (UE 3.0), Resident Evil 5 (New Proprietary Engine - NPE), Final Fantasy 13 (White Engine), Haze (NPE), MotorStorm (NPE), Ratchet & Clank Future (NPE), Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (NPE), Crysis (CryEngine 2.0), Grand Theft Auto 4 (Rage Engine), Killzone 2 (NPE)

* Heavily-updated
- Literally, these games were made by updating the former games.
- Can’t overcome technical limitations (restrictions).
- These titles can use only small amount of power of the systems due to many reasons (optimization, efficiency of architecture in terms of hardware and software, et cetera)
- These games can’t impress the gamers.
- Halo 3, Armored Core 4, Tony Hawk Skate series, etc

Unreal Engine 2.5 was used to make Unreal Tournament 2004. UE 2.5 includes Karma Physics engine. Then Epic totally renovated (modified) UE 2.5 to make UE 3.0. Since UE 3.0 is extremely different from UE 2.5, UE 3.0 is classified as a brand-new engine (i.e.: UE 3.0 has Havok Physic 4.5 engine).

Halo 3 is an updated version of Halo 2 which was released in 2004 by using Renderware Engine (by choosing this updating-method, the developers can save huge amount of development time and budget).

In a report, it says Gears of War’s 90% is based on DirectX 9 tech (10% is DX10 tech); based on this factual data, the specialist (writer) assumed that Halo 3’s 98% is based on DX 9 tech. DX10 gameplay means: perfectly breakable buildings and vegetation (shoot at any parts of a building, then those parts must be penetrated realistically like in Crysis), perfectly deformable objects (in Gran Turismo 5, every inch of the car is perfectly deformed), soft shadows, 100% real facial-animation (Bungie never have to worry about this tech since we can’t see Spartans’ faces, LOL), depth-of-field, motion blur, etc. Crapalo 3 doesn’t have any of the above DX10 gameplay elements.

Halo 3’s beta footages look mediocre. There're beta footages of Gears of War and Resistance available online, unless you are blind and illiterate, you must announce the fact that beta builds look 95% same as the final (retail) versions.

Halo 3 (Bungie), Perfect Dark Crap (Rare), and Shadowcrap (FASA’s Shadowrun) have extremely similar graphical qualities and artistic design. I’ll educate you on this matter. The developers of all these games are owned by Microsoft. These developers share all kinds of techs which are used to make X360 games (DX 10 based, not OpenGL 2.x based).

Killzone 2 is being made by Guerrilla which is a subsidiary of Sony; it has 130 employees (programmers and graphics designers). The total budget for KZ2 is $60 million (just for your reference and ignorance, Epic spent $9 M to make Gears of War with 80 devs). Also KZ2 is in Guinness Book 2007 as the most expensive video game in the entire gaming history.

In 2005, Guerrilla hired 50 programmers and designers ONLY from AAA-level companies around the world; these new developers are the CORE-brains behind KZ2.

Killzone 2’s actual gameplay footage (pre-alpha build) was shown to journalists at GDC 2007 expo behind closed doors. These journalists said in news articles ~
- KZ2 is both graphically (lighting, shadows, mind-blowing sky, river) and technologically extremely advanced.
- It was like watching Next-gen Black 2 and Half Life 3 combined together (we now know what kind of shooter KZ2 is). Everything which was hit by bullets and missiles were penetrated.
- The characters (soldiers), indoor and outdoor environments are extremely detailed and gorgeous.
- The sound effects were blowing away the audience (sounds are important, too, guys).

They need to do research and look up who was involved in making Blu Ray, and that they started plans on making it A LONG time ago, i think it was around 2002 i believe.

 » Doomed your wrong

Sony cannot get sued over the way the make discs. If thats possible, then everyone is in trouble. Its some stupid rumor that Gamespot published from a "source", meaning its a freaking rumor.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-05-28
 » news keeps getting better

What do you mean sony can't get sued over the way they make discs? Didn't you read the article? Knowing sony, they will probably try to fight it and loose like with Immersion. The company suing them is seeking an injunction which would make it so they couldn't use it on blu ray discs! Ouch that would hurt. Looks like this will cost sony even more money this year. Too bad sony!

 » Big games 4 PS3....

It blows my mind how I hear all these people hyping the newMGS and Final Fantasy when they are not scheduled to release until next summer!

I own a PS3 and I am really hoping for some great games to come out in the future but I totally feel like I own a $600 piece of plastic that sits on my shelf.

I swear if you listen closely you can hear my 360 quietly laugh at my PS3 every time I turn it on.

   Re: damonous - 2007-05-26
 » Deaf from fan noise

You must have great hearing if you can hear your 360 quietly laugh over the sound of its honking-loud fan. --I have both systems, too. But, for every 360 title I own, I probably have 3-4 PS3 titles. I've set it before on the QJ boards: I think it's funny that people slam the software for PS3, saying it's so bad --yet those same people agree that there is a large number of titles available on both platforms (and growing). Maybe that's really saying, in a subliminal way, that people just don't think the current 'next-gen' games have realized the full promise of 'next-gen gaming' (and this largely includes 360 at fault, since it's been around much longer). There's a lot of great stuff for PS3 now, and there certainly will be in the near future. (And, you won't need to have dog ears to hear the PS3 quietly laugh at that point.)

I think its funny how the sony fan boys keep saying just wait just wait. weren't u saying that like 3 months after launch. How long do we have to wait. We all know at some time the ps3 will have 1 good game but how long will it take? Microsoft has this planned out 1 big game after another full steam ahead!

   by Meh (Unregistered) - 2007-05-26
 » Ok

The ps3 looks ok to me, nothing special really...you see its all about presentation, (lackluster menu system and feature "that we've seen before" dont really show off what the PS3 is truly capable off.) I dont think the PS3 is a bad console i just think the retards who created it need to step down and give the reins to a newer generation of thinkers and developers who know what people like.

My 2 cents
